I totally agree and understand, and have made the same point myself in the past. I suppose if you love this particular franchise and you feel let down by it making an overtly sexy character, then I understand. I guess I just don't care strongly about Mass Effect enough to think that this is a particularly bad example. Fun fact for the day: Bridesmaids fails the reverse Bechdel test. If you want to know how it feels to be a woman watching a typical movie, there you go!

I do agree with you. All I can say is: Sexiness does not equal sexism. It feels like you're complaining because she's designed to look sexy?

I think this discussion is done, Sal. MaleShep was designed to be as attractive as possible, so was FemShep. I don't think you can say much more than that. Also, "Option C" was there to make a point, not just plaster boobs on the site: That character is a REAL video game character, and that's exactly how she appears in the game. It's absurd. FemShep is at least not that, and as far as video games go, in my mind there are much better targets to complain about.

So has anyone found a way to save the universe yet? I'm not even sure where I should be looking?

From those instructions it sounds like you need to connect to Steam in order to tell it to start next time in Offline mode? Weird.

This. The other job might be a huge step backwards in your career, and it really doesn't sound very good from the way you've described it (instability and all), but you clearly want to go for it because you hate your current situation so much. I guess you should try and change your current situation, and not force yourself to do something that's making you unhappy... Have you looked around at all your options? StackOverflow Careers is supposed to be very good, etc. Also, perhaps taking a holiday could relieve some of the pressure and give you more energy to find something you feel confident in taking?

Yeah, I was about to say the same thing... Don't hear people complaining about that very often

Looks like this thread is just going to have to say, "screw the system", and go rogue. All in the name of justice.

Thanks, everyone I have some reservations about what's actually possible with increasing the texture resolution. For most characters you never see them close enough for it to make a difference, and the clothing is so stylized that it's hard to see where extra detail could be added, but I'm sure there's some potential. If you want to get involved in the ongoing attempts at making GF beautiful(er), there's a thread I started on Residual's forums: http://residual.scummvm.org/viewtopic.php?t=100 I put some 3do files from Grim here for you: http://www.thunderpeel2001.com/grim/ I don't know what they are exactly, as I can't open them. Please feel free to hack around (Unfortunately they're binary .3do files, so old Jedi Knight tools that converted to more common formats don't work, as that game used text .3do files.)

It's getting stressful in here. Let's hug and make up. And now we're back where we started...

This is for reals. A remastered version of Grim Fandango is something I've wanted to see for years and years, and finally Residual has caught up. Today is the first time anyone has successfully put high-res textures into Grim Fandango, to my knowledge. All previous attempts haven't worked due to the way the game's engine mapped textures. It was only after discussing it with the developers that we finally hit on a hack for Residual that might make it work... So I popped it in, compiled the code -- and, lo! It worked! I then made some high-res versions of the textures, staying as close to the original ones as possible and took some screengrabs. The best thing would be to up the polygon count on the models, but there's no way to do that until someone writes an app to convert the .3do files to .obj (and back again) -- and then there could still be unforeseen problems. Still exciting though!

Ha. How weird. I put the emphasis in the wrong place so I edited it and somehow it became a whole new post.

I made this today: Hi-res Manny!

It's probably helping Indy by taking out the zombie.

Simple reason it's a scam: If they were really doing something unique they'd have millions in funding in a second. That would allow them to hire artists to show off their capabilities, instead of saying "we're a tech company, not a games company". They'll need a pretty damned impressive demo if they want to show off their capabilities, and the fact that everything they've done looks so ugly (including their company logo, video, etc.) makes them look very amateurish indeed.

Now there's an idea!

Yeah, I was looking at AMD Athlon II X3 460 Asus M4A87TD EVO 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3-1333 Based on Ars Technica's guide. Comes to £182 :-/

Yes! Now you're making me thinking something suspicious is going on. Are SSD manufacturers trying to socially influence buying? :-/

Ah, yes. I wonder what the cheapest band-for-buck chipset currently is, then? (I'll do some research.) (Oddly enough I asked this question on SuperUser.com and before it got closed for being too open-ended, everyone was focusing on my harddrives... Weird!)

Hmph. Sorry to continue this, but I now I think my machine is being held back by the rest of its four year old components. I don't really want to spend a huge amount turning it into a beast of a machine, instead I'd rather just like to cheaply bring it up to date... if at all. Does anyone here have an idea of what the least amount of components I could replace to bring it closer to the level of my graphics card? Or to put it another way: Is there a bottleneck, and if so, how do I reduce it? PROC: Intel E6600 Core2Duo 2.40GHz RAM: 4GB (4x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800) MOBO: Gigabyte 965P-DS3P (1333MHz FSB) GFX: MSI R6870 Hawk (ATI Radeon HD 6870) 1GB HD: 2x 400 Gb Seagate ST3400620AS Barracuda 7200.10 (RAID 1)

Haha, close. That's actually Ivy from Soul Calibur IV... but it's essentially the same thing: Sex sells.
-
Yes, it is pretty impressive when you're watching it working. I was really blown away™ at how quickly it all worked. But if there's not a decent library of games, then I guess it's pretty pointless

To be fair, the differences are negligible. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150244340101645.322035.85811091644&type=1 It's not like they went...
