  1. Movie/TV recommendations

I was going to recommend Curb, too. For some reason I assumed you'd already seen it. Doh!
  2. Movie/TV recommendations

    Hmm. Which version, though? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asterix_%26_Obelix:_Mission_Cleopatra#Translations
  3. Deus Ex

Well the first mod I linked to seemed to suggest that there was a bug in the game when playing in anything but 4:3 (i.e. widescreen monitors), so there may be a genuine issue.
  4. Recently completed video games

Interesting stuff. I especially found this interesting: Tropes Are Good. It's a good reminder that just because you've spotted a trope, doesn't mean that the thing you spotted it in is bad.
  5. Deus Ex

This mod is supposed to help accuracy with modern hardware... I can't vouch for it, though: http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-enhanced Also, this looks interesting: http://www.moddb.com/mods/shifter1 And this increases the texture of the world, not the models or characters: http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-new-vision/downloads/new-vision-version-10

Huh. Looks like I dropped the ball twice. You mentioned the Coens in your original post - doh - and I'd forgotten about our brief exchange. (Not sure why I thought your movie taste is weird -- I love all the things you've listed.) I think the Holy Grail is probably more fun than Life of Brian, but if you don't click with Monty Python humour it's not going to convert you.
  7. Movie/TV recommendations

I'm sure there's got to be plenty to choose from. I love all those examples as well. Hmm. *mind goes blank* Have you seen the Larry Sanders show? That's a great TV show in the same vein as a lot of the above (The Office, Spinal Tap, Fawlty Towers). The Big Lebowski is also great, but most people find it more funny on the second or third viewing (like Spinal Tap). You seem to like British humour, so I take it you've seen the Monty Python movies? Anchorman is great fun if you're in the mood for something zany (it can grate if you're not). Blazing Saddles is pretty damned funny if you like Mel Brooks (and are aware of the clean-cut Western tropes like it spoofs). (I also have a soft-spot for The Producers -- Gene Wilder is great.)If you feel like something older and more "classic", Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot with Jack Lemmon is great fun. Um, I now realise I'm pretty crap at recommending things... but I've already written all this, so it'll have to do. Good luck
  8. Deus Ex

I loved Deus Ex when it first came out. I'm almost afraid to play it again in case it doesn't live up to my memories. I don't remember having too much trouble with the first level once it clicked. I probably did a poor job, but hiding in shadows and knocking out guards was so exhilarating once I figured out how to do it. Hmm. That level was overwhelmingly big, now that I think about it... And you weren't given any direction. Totally unlike the rest of the game. Also, I'm surprised more isn't made of it's prescience: The world has gone terrorist crazy after a terrorist attack on a New York landmark. Sure the rest is sci-fi, but that part showed keen insight and understanding, I thought.
  9. Almost no one finishes games, but what about episodes?

So that's why there's so many five minute tooth-brushing scenes in movies these days. Thanks for the explanation

  11. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

Why is it that as soon as you swap a raft for a surfboard scientists don't want to know?
  12. Almost no one finishes games, but what about episodes?

I think you're arguing with your friends rather than anyone here on the forum.
  13. Almost no one finishes games, but what about episodes?

What is this? So nobody here can complain about games? Life is too short to spend on games that aren't good.
  14. Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

It's still worth playing. I guess I sounded overly negative, but it's not a bad game, especially if you enjoyed the original.
  15. Almost no one finishes games, but what about episodes?

I thought Tim Schafer said that modern games where the other way around? He said Brutal Legend had to be shorter, or something didn't he? It struck me as odd at the time, though.
  16. Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

So I finally completed this. I didn't find it quite as endearing as the previous game. The storyline wasn't as compelling and the ending wasn't as satisfying. The main problem was the puzzles, though. They obviously tried to tie them into the environment and characters more, but by doing so it seems they limited them in scope. The puzzles in the game just weren't as much fun or interesting as they were in the first game. Still, it was enjoyable. I'm looking forward to the third one.
  17. Almost no one finishes games, but what about episodes?

I wonder if asking this on the TTG forum may yield the answers you're looking for. For me, I often go through this pattern with TTG games: Episode 1, "Ooh! New TTG game! I wonder what it's like..." (Plays) "Not bad. I wonder what they'll do with Episode 2?" Episode 2, "A new episode. Cool. I hope this one is really good." (Plays) "Hmm. Well maybe Episode 3 will be great." Episode 3, "I really should play this." Episode 4, "I really should play Episode 3." Episode 5, "I'll wait for my DVD version to arrive and play through them all". *DVD sits on shelf* Eventually I'll usually go back and play through them, but I still haven't completed BTTF or S&M 3.
  18. Life

So how do you feel the program reflected reality overall? That's good to hear. That's a bit depressing. Did you talk to the guy about his day? It's so expensive there that I hope they paid for travel and spending money, at least. So are you still working at the store, or have you been moved to an office like they suggested you would be? Whatever happened, it's a pretty amazing story
  19. Nintendo 3DS

But are they 2D games like Layton, or are they 3D ones? I imagine 3D ones will be fine, but when it's pixel perfect artwork I get worried. Especially when there's sites with people who seem to notice: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/09/playing-ds-on-a-3ds-is-less-than-ideal/ http://nsider2.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=580963
  20. Nintendo 3DS

Damn, the 3DS is sooo cheap... but I'm still a little hung up on the size of the screen for DS games. I love Professor Layton (and his games) and playing them on a smaller screen or blurry(?) and upscaled isn't a great prospect. Especially given how XL owners seemed to go on about how the larger screen size was really the way DS games should have always been played. Never mind, I'll figure it out.
  21. Life

Also, for the dirty, filthy foreigners among you (and subbes), does this YouTube link work for you? qNpdQt4o1Gc Edit: Unfortunate still. Looks like you're sitting on your bosses lap, Ian :-/ Edit edit: Apparently not.
  22. Eric Chahi's Project Dust

Sounds like Ubisoft need to go on Undercover Boss and play their own games... or something.
  23. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

This is reflective of my entire experience of Oblivion... it totally kills the world for me.
  24. Life

Holy fuck! I can't believe that. I hope it's all working out for you, Ian. What a trip! Edit: Thoughts... That piece of bread...! Also: Any thoughts on how the show presented what happened? Did you really not know there was something about that guy? Obviously even "reality" shows like this are often scripted, and moments are repeated for the camera. Spoilerific thoughts and questions, for those who want to watch the show for themselves: You come across as the nice guy you are in the program. Nice one

    Do what there?
