  1. Beyond Better & Evil!

I'm guessing it's some proprietary level editor that's the problem. Most old games and indeed many modern ones use an in-house solution for that and import textures/models in unless they use something like Unreal Engine, CryEngine, Unity, etc. If your level editor is knocked out of commission and/or nobody knows how to use it that pretty much limits you to replacing existing stuff with better versions.
  2. Uncharted 3: the Uncharteningest

I'm completely with toblix here, I absolutely loved the section at the airport as I got to do some proper stealth action, and I really enjoyed the desert section. Yes the chase section was reminiscent of UC2 and UC1's similar sequences, but then it's not a bad thing for a game or film to have signature moments like that (look at Bourne or Bond). I was initially really underwhelmed when they brought back the supernatural element, but they riffed on it in such a way that actually played to my expectations after UC2 and where it led caught me by surprise. I think it was pretty cool use of misdirection actually, and as mentioned before they didn't keep it going long enough to get tedious as in UC2. Overall I rate the fuck out of UC3. Some parts might have been a little weaker, but I can't say it's better or worse than UC2. It sits on pretty much the same level in every regard, short of some kind of retarded bugs that I would hope were patched out by now (thankfully the aiming was sorted out before I started).
  3. Your first gaming device...

    The loveable Atari ST.
  4. Putt-Putt on the... iPhone?

This was announced quite some time ago so perhaps you missed the blip, I was certainly aware of it months ago and have no reason to believe it to be anything but legit. Not that I ever played the Humongous games despite being of a roughly appropriate age when they came out. Edit: Atari announcement from November.
  5. Tribes: Ascend

Agreed though, the Infiltrator definitely needed a buff and I'm glad he's getting what looks like an equivalent of Team Fortress 2's Demoman weapon. That has endless potential for causing craziness in the enemy base. Not really bothered about the grenades of the knives, though — can't see why you wouldn't just spam enemies with the silenced pistol instead.
  6. Tribes: Ascend

I don't know about that, I've been spending a lot of time as a Technician and I've found that deployable turrets can make a huge difference to flag defence — it's literally been a case of when my turrets are up the flag is secure, and the moment our generator goes down the enemy starts getting away with their grab. The beauty of (upgraded) light turrets is unless you're going extremely fast you're guaranteed to lose a lot of your health. Naturally I don't let my turrets do all the work, I act as a living third turret with my SMG which is usually required to finish off the 1/3 of health those who dare whiz by my turrets have left. When you have a few good Technicians and a Heavy on the job though the flag is practically impervious to attack. Incidentally, I've been doing lot of suicide runs recently where I go for the enemy base and deploy turrets all inside it. Very amusing!
  7. Tribes: Ascend

I've been having a pretty good time as Infiltrator, but mostly as a general annoyance rather than an effective generator/turret destroyer (apart from when everything's not been upgraded). Raider, on the other hand, is absolutely ridiculous — the carnage that can be dished out with that class is unreal.
  8. Tribes: Ascend

Nice, new patch today that adds Assassin's Creed mode: mNqaiUl27MQ
  9. Tribes: Ascend

Frankly, I love this game. I've poured no end of hours into it now, and since they put two new maps in I'm having an even better time as one of them is very Tribes 2-esque. They've done such a better job with this than Irrational did with Vengeance it's not even funny. They've gotten all the various mechanics down to a tee, and it's all very balanced. Now I've started unlocking lots of stuff and can play as distinct class types (mostly Technician/Engineer for the past few days) it's just become terrific. The only thing I'm not so keen on is the vehicles as I often used them as a fun diversion in T2, whereas here they just don't feel very fun to use. Not a biggie, though. I wa initially very hesitant to let myself get into it after the huge disappointment of Vengeance and it is undeniably a little rough visually, but this is great game. Proper Tribes. And improvements are happening all the time; I saw that a whole host of new weapon and map details were leaked the other day. This video makes me want to go play it right now: slG0UWSiloY Anyone who appreciates capturing flags should grab this when it's released for real in a few weeks, especially if you're of the Team Fortress inclination. It's free!
  10. Sim City V

Looking incredible. In many ways I was expecting it to be little more than a risk-free reinterpretation of the old games with newer graphics, but it looks like they're keen on implementing all sorts of revolutionary simulations and systems into the game — as someone who loves that kind of of complexity I'm ridiculously excited. :-D
  11. Beyond Better & Evil!

It's pretty common for last-gen games to be ported as-is with the only real enhancements being improved resolution and redesigned UI elements — and a better frame rate if the original ran sluggishly. This has been the case for the God of War, Metal Gear Solid, and ICO/SotC HD collections anyway, apart from some very minor enhancements. I'm OK with it as I've often said to people that the last generation is where games hit the point where they could look pretty attractive forever so long as the art direction and production was good, whereas PS1/N64-era 3D games will always be hard to get into visually no matter how well they were made. BG&E is definitely one of the games that still looks wonderful thanks to it excellent production the first time around.
  12. The Last Express

One of those fancy rhetorical questions I think.
  13. Fund Tim Schafer's next game YOURSELF!

That Kickstarter figure needs to make its mind up.
  14. Fund Tim Schafer's next game YOURSELF!

The Kickstarter fund has risen at least a few times since it ended yesterday. How's that happening?
  15. Fund Tim Schafer's next game YOURSELF!

Grim Fandango was quite well known for exploding over budget due to the engine and stuff though, right?
  16. Fund Tim Schafer's next game YOURSELF!

I'd imagine there'll be some loss from stuff like that, but as Amazon verifies card details before actually taking the payment I can't imagine it'll be too significant. It's only going to affect who, like, have maxed out their cards. Of course considering the tempting goodies that've been offered I expect a lot of people will be maxing out their cards for this Kickstarter.
  17. Tribes: Ascend

Hah, brings some nostalgia that does. I was quite enjoying the music in T:A earlier. I managed to finally grab the flag for the first time and was pleased to hear the music rev up and get my pulse rising as every fucker on the map turned their attention towards me — that's what Tribes is all about, TF2 can't hope to match that rush.
  18. Tribes: Ascend

I've been playing some more and I'm increasingly feeling that the key change needed is more juice for the jetpacks. Now that I've fully upgraded my Pathfinder energy pack to the maximum allowed the physics feel pretty much as they did in Tribes 2 without an energy pack, which is perfect for me. Unfortunately this means I always have to use this loadout to feel right, whereas in Tribes 2 this was pretty much the baseline mobility. Ascend just needs a bit more power behind those jetpacks, which will not only make the action more fun but also make larger maps viable again.

I never really 'got' Subversion even though it looked pretty, and it doesn't sound a great deal like Introversion did either.
  20. Tribes: Ascend

I have actually been playing it a little and I would agree that the map sizes seem a bit unsatisfactory. Some of my fondest memories of Tribes 2 involve exploring the maps, finding unusual new attack routes, and just generally immersing myself in the environment. With T:A all the maps are very small and more akin to Tribes 2's smaller ones, which I rarely played. There's no real sense of exploration at all, something I like in any FPS I play. Physics-wise I'm not completely sure whether or not I'm happy with it. It does seem like energy is quite scarce and so you can't be as airborne, and when you run out of energy you drop like a rock — I recall Tribes 2 being more 'soupy' and I preferred that, although as I understand it most Tribes 1 fans (who are spectacularly vocal) were totally turned off by Tribes 2's physics. Weapons and everything else seem pretty faithful, although admittedly I've not really touched vehicles as I can't see the point with the maps being so small. Within my first 30 minutes of playing all my old spinfusor skills came flooding back and I basically owned the whole server. So for now I'm going to probably take a seat and see how it evolves, because as it seems a TF2-esque F2P model is being pursued I expect that new maps and adjustments will be made with time. Indeed, halfway through Tribes 2's lifespan the physics model was completely changed so I'm used to things being mixed up. Basically if they get bigger maps in there and maybe be a bit more generous with energy (at least for the lighter classes), I'll be happier. I agree though, I'd love to see Tribes 2 essentially just brought up to date and re-released. Unfortunately a lot of the Tribes community wants the same thing, but for Tribes 1. So I guess the best we're ever going to get is a mish-mash of what the two audiences want, potentially pleasing nobody completely. I guess PlanetSide 2 is likely to be the next sci-fi FPS I truly get into.
  21. Prison Architect

While my anticipation of this has been dampened by the looming SimCity, I found this tweet pretty hilarious.
  22. Tribes: Ascend

A final release date is upon us. April 12th. They've also put out this Dead Island parody, even includes a bit of dub heh: pjyUy5f3VIw Although this is the one that really shows what Tribes is all about (Projectiles!): ayaBHJeEpbw Can't wait! Might delve into the open beta before then seeing as it's now going to be in a reasonably final state, we'll see.
  23. Sim City V

I don't think anyone wasn't expecting this game to have DLC coming out its arse. Hopefully it'll be like The Sims 3 though, in that it'll be easy to completely ignore the fact extras exist (you could have spent your whole salary on new chairs and objects for that game if you wanted). The Sims 3 offered at least as much as past games despite there being extra available, so I'm optimistic that'll be the case here too. I hope.
