It's a standalone game based on the Source Engine, so you don't need any existing Source games to run it, just the (free) SDK. It'll be free, but it won't actually be on Steam if it isn't approved via Greenlight — such is the beauty of Valve's new system.

Give it a thumbs up on Steam Greenlight, lads: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=94128543&ExtraParams%5B0%5D=&method=filedetails&controller=sharedfiles&insideModal=0&requirelogin=1

This exact same discussion came up on another forum I frequent so I do happen to have the original exchange lying around: It's pretty hard for me to choose which I prefer because, let's face it, both sound pretty cheesy. I think the reality is this was a very unremarkable moment in the game where it was kind of weak in the original too, but because it was such a throwaway moment it's not something anyone remembers. In BM:S, on the other hand, it's the first (leaked) media seen in years so everyone is taking every millisecond of it as a guide of what to expect. At risk of sounding biased, I'm friends with a number of people working (or who have worked) on BM:S and they're far bigger Half-Life nuts than I or anyone else around is likely to be. They've gone to outrageous lengths to preserve the original feel and this voice thing — which as far as I'm aware they've already tried to address by bringing back the original radio static, etc — probably isn't an omen of the whole game being a waste of time.

I was pretty put off by a particular exchange between the soldiers in the leaked gameplay video, but having since compared it to the original it turns out it was always just as bad. I assumed they'd rewritten it or something but that exact conversation is in HL1, cheesy writing and all. The only real difference is a lack of radio static, which I guess they're adding. Everything else looks absolutely awesome though so I'm optimistic I'll enjoy it!

Haha, awesome. I didn't even spot the crab for a moment, the little shit. Puts me right off walking on beaches. Here are my Leeds museum shots, or at least half of them (plus a few of the hotel room): Large versions here: Flickr

In other news, what a great piece of fan music. Gets me all nostalgic.

I kind of suspect it won't be literally open world though, more that the engine can now handle extremely expansive areas. I just don't see Kojima giving up his scripting control by letting you craft your own course. That's a good thing though, MGS3 and MGS4 already took the series quite far in that direction by letting you take multiple routes (skipping entire areas in favour of others) and having pretty damn big sandbox areas.

Fuck this movie shit, NEW METAL GEAR SOLID GAME ANNOUNCED!!!!

Fucking hell fire. I knew this day would eventually come and I just don't know how to react.

Sweet, love those sunsets — especially the last one. I also enjoy thinking that some hilariously drunken guy accidentally walked into the water with his kebab and sank, leaving only his kebab. Sorted out some food shots from Leeds: Big versions on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ryanjw/

I always overlooked this game as it seemed to be a bit weird and quite deviated from the 'MGS formula' like Portable Ops, but I guess I should give it a go when I grab the HD collection!

Love the Katamari. Also love the duck, I really like ducks and feel you can never take enough photos of them. Those clouds in the city shot are quite splendid also. Just come back from Leeds so I'll probably throw up some photos from there soon.

Blows my mind that people are sat there casually throwing $500—1000 backing amounts at it.Those rich bastards!!!!!

Heh, Molyneux's Twitter: A vital detail Molydeux overlooked!

I did back it, but I'm not looking.

Man, I have no idea what you're talking about as I've been intentionally staying ignorant about DF's game but that sounds great.
-
Haha, I think it's great. The whole point of the game is to test whether or not people are willing to pay for essentially a complete unknown, simply in order to know what it is and/or attain the recognised status of having it — a bit like investing in a very rare/expensive item in a multiplayer game. In some ways it's a cheap way of getting some early funding, but it's also going to be a pretty interesting experiment to see the results of.

I'll be surprised if it's something genuinely awesome like 50% of however much has been spent on the game or something like that. In fact, if that possibility were even planted in people's minds that'd pretty much send this thing wild.

I guess he means creating such huge sprites takes more time, which I guess is fair enough if we're talking about something like Monkey Island: Special Edition sprites. The Broken Sword sprites were and are relatively simple though, so I see no reason why an artist couldn't create these in illustrator like he normally does and simply upscale the hell out of them, being vectors. I guess it'd mean paying more attention to details like line strength and tapering, but it's not that big a deal. Again though, it's still hand animation which is a long and laborious process, particularly if it's got to be smooth. I can totally see why it wouldn't make the cut with this budget.

I bet the prize inside the cube will just be the next game.

Yeah the pricing is ludicrous, you'd have to spend hundreds to unlock even the stuff you want. I figured that if you play a lot it's probably best to buy gold and then spend it all on XP boosters, which in addition to the free boosters (if you still get them) means you'll unlock XP fast enough to give yourself a near-constant stream of new stuff. But even then it's still a lot to be spending on a relatively lightweight game, although I guess more maps have been added since I stopped playing (just after Tartarus was released).

Yeah, sometimes you just get an absolutely retarded team and end up with like the whole team trying to do the same role. I usually take these situations as an opportunity to learn a new role, and eventually I got pretty good at all roles — and enjoyed them. I have personally burnt out with this game too, though. Quite a while ago, actually. Looking forward to PlanetSide 2 once its beta woes are over though, which is a kind of weird bit of deja vu because it was PlanetSide 1 that I transitioned to after I started tiring of Tribes 2 almost 10 years ago (holy fuck).

Haha. 'Molyneux's Box' is definitely a keeper.
