  1. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Am I missing some vital factor that prevents people from just using the official pro controller? I'm not entirely sure why the GameCube thing exists or why you'd buy it for a super-limited game selection as opposed to the more broadly supported option. Does the pro controller feel shitty or something? Wondering as I may (or may not) get one. Having peripherals for all kinds of legacy controllers would be pretty amazing for Virtual Console games though, especially if Nintendo actually made the games compatible with all future consoles and said peripherals too.

I found that story pretty disturbing when I saw it last night, although I don't recall any links to MRA? Is that something in the video (can't really tolerate watching it)? I've come across guys a bit like this before, who are really bad at interacting with girls and end up hating them as a result. Instead of accepting responsibility for themselves not being very attractive or good at talking to them and figuring out why, they see themselves as just fine and blame girls for not seeing how great they are. These same guys, just like the killer, then spend copious amounts of time on pick-up artist programmes and such, which invariably have an emphasis on 'gaming' women and basically manipulating them into finding them attractive. It's a subtle difference, but whereas a lot of guys want to be more attractive to girls, many of these PUA types want to make girls be attracted to them. Of course, ultimately these guys still have the same problems and no amount of chat-up tricks will help them. At that point some of them, again like the killer, seemingly end up in anti-PUA/women communities where they hate both the women who reject them and the guys who can successfully attract them. It's all incredibly toxic, and stems from social issues possibly complemented and/or caused by disorder. I'd say that that's what's led to this rather than anything to do with gun access or men's rights activism. He stabbed half the victims, so while I do believe easy access to guns can dramatically inflate death counts during such incidents, it doesn't seem to have been a factor here.
  3. Recently completed video games

Ah man, I'd never heard of Shelter but it looks absolutely delightful — such a wonderfully simple but potentially powerful concept. Wish it was on consoles. Makes me wonder why more games haven't explored survival in nature, there's endless potential for heartbreaking and exciting stories. It'd be so amazing to be able to play out the things you see in the BBC's Planet Earth, Life, and Africa; if it were handled gracefully it could induce more genuine emotion than any game has ever managed (like the baby elephant scene from Africa oh my god).

I guess Half-Life 2 really opened the doors on the whole companion thing, I don't recall it being done in a way that just worked beforehand. Crazy as it seems, Gears of War only came a couple of years later!

    Dehumidifier not an option?

I had never heard of Kombucha before, but the first paragraph on Wikipedia alone is enough for me to not.

Well, it all comes down to how much you have to scrub off said shit. I'm not sure how UK toilets compare to elsewhere, but there's sufficient water in the bowl that you don't end up with smeared sides very much because the shit is never exposed to the sides of the bowl without loads of water in the way — my logical side tells me that a toilet with less water inside will mean there's more often shit just piled against the bowl in its purest form, leading to it beginning to dry and adhere much more readily. Of course, gut consistency and defecation intensity will cause all kinds of different scenarios.

Yeah that sounds shit. I broke up after years not long ago, and it's been fairly straightforward getting on with life precisely because there's been literally zero contact. It's not easy deleting numbers, restricting Facebook, and all that but absolutely necessary for emotionally moving on. Remaining friends just isn't an option for me. I'm not sure what I'd do if she were in my social circle, though. Probably end up moving away, as extreme as that sounds. I couldn't deal with that whether it be after days or years.

Why is it you're seeing it? Do you work together or have common friends or something?

    Nutter alert.

There is a worse thing. Blocking the toilet at work in a room/cubicle which literally opens out onto the front entrance of the building with the front door being metres away, after having a revolting chips and curry-infused poo emitting fumes sharp enough to make a grown man cry. Such was my desperation that I had to resort to getting my arm in there, but to my horror the problem was deeper than anticipated. I'd come that far though, so proceeded until victorious — with an arm that required about half an hour of being bathed in anti-bacterial soap and water.

We just published a nice interview with a level designer on BioShock Infinite, once again it's mostly for development types: http://www.mapcore.org/page/features/_/interviews/interview-with-francois-furyo-roughol-r39 Getting a nice little collection together now, already got two more in the works: http://www.mapcore.org/page/features/_/interviews/
  14. I hate Far Cry 2, what am I doing wrong?

Wouldn't Fallout 3 be a better example, seeing as it's by the same developers as Skyrim and is very much towards that end of the spectrum but still a shooter? I can definitely imagine that a lot of Far Cry 2 fans would be Fallout 3 fans.
  15. Far Cry 4: A grenade rolls down everest

Until now I hadn't seen the high-resolution version of the art, but having just done so it really does seem cripplingly obvious that he's East Asian. His eyebrows even look dyed. And just for you Twiz, I did one of my professional Photoshop jobs:

I've ended up with five PS3 controllers following one upgrade from Sixaxis to DualShock3 and one PS3 replacement.

Think it's safe to say at this point that it went the way of the Gizmondo.

It sounds difficult. Do you get feedback from them about why exactly you're not ticking the boxes? It's hard to say this without sounding like I'm trying to be an ass (I'm honestly not), but it seems like that's a lot of interviews to go through without even one offer. Even when I had literally no experience I was able to get offers because I'd done a fair amount of hobby projects I could demonstrate. I don't know what kind of jobs you've been applying for, but with your latest interview I would imagine an employer would love to see game projects you've developed using your time out of work. If these don't exist, you're at an immediate disadvantage to the candidates that have them — and they will. If that's covered, it could come down to interview confidence. Have you considered mock interviews with friends, so you can see how you cope with difficult questions when it's not just you by yourself or some actual interviewer? Ask them for honest opinions on how you present yourself.
  19. Life

We're not talking about life though, we're talking about job interviews. In that context, I've never failed to get the job, and I don't believe that it's just about skills beside I've never even had to do a coding test — it's the contagious positivity and enthusiasm. Negative thinking not only costs you many opportunities, it makes any blow feel a thousand times worse. Eliminate it and it doesn't even matter if you succeed or fail. But you'll fail less in certain scenarios (i.e. any that involve someone rejecting you). That's my theory, anyway.
  20. Life

That negative attitude will doom you to failure I'm afraid.
  21. Life

Oh for sure, but I can only game for so long and there's just too much evening! It's funny how before I felt like I barely had time to do my home hobby stuff so I spent probably way too much time isolated at home, whereas I can see me now feeling like I need to go out so I can get a break from the place — which I guess is good.
  22. Far Cry 4: A grenade rolls down everest

Well, he never looked white to me in the first place — but I'm guessing any possible misinterpretation will be cleared up in future art.

It's official: the guy on the cover isn't white. http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/05/20/far-cry-4-director-clears-up-two-details-about-the-game-box-art.aspx?utm_content=buffer1ea49&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer
  24. It's a shame that Adobe doesn't do a lower-price Creative Cloud tier for the Elements series. While Premiere Elements could be a great choice, like professional-grade products the codecs and feature set can fall out of date so it feels a bit shit to pay £80 or whatever for it. Still, if you think you would regularly use a few of Adobe's programmes you might be able to justify a £50/month Creative Cloud membership — or get work to do it. I personally love how seamlessly Audition (audio), Photoshop (sprites), and Premiere Pro (video) integrate with each other; for example, you can click on sound in Premiere Pro to edit the shit out of it in Audition and it auto-updates while preserving the original. Of course, this is all irrelevant based on the original requirement. But like the guys above, I think that finding good free software of this kind will be challenging.

It was about 1.5 hours each way before, now it's more like 1.5 minutes each way.
