Also, I suspect the two .com domains (brutal-legend.com and brutallegend.com) are in fact owned by bastards and not anyone affiliated with the game going off the whois records, although one seems to have been registered to another game developer back in 2005.

Haha, yeah I absolutely love the design of that big mouth head. I love the jittery animation too; at first I thought they'd done stop motion on some actually-made model. The body did seem a bit bare though and would have benefited from some leather.

Yeah, the TF2 Medic is probably the purest kind of medic I've seen in an FPS yet, with them almost always doing nothing but heal. Their gun is okay for making escapes and such (ie: if the guy(s) they were healing die(s)), but it's practically useless as a proper offensive tool. Almost a comical contrast to the TFC medic, which was basically an all-purpose offensive class that could fly across the entire map; heal itself; eliminate anything with its shotgun, grenades, and ultra-accurate nail gun; move fast as hell; and of course infect people, making them lose five or so points of health every few seconds until they die. I loved playing as the Medic in TFC, but man did it feel wrong. Nobody really actually healed people, and they were probably the most effective flag grabbers ever. Probably the definition of 'overpowered' and I routinely ended up dying less than handful of times in a whole game (along with other Medic aficionados).

A community game sounds good to me, although I'm selfish enough to require that the server be in Europe as I seriously am incapable of enjoying a cross-pond ping and will end up leaving in frustration.

No he's right, shooting them literally has no perceptible effect. The only way you know a Spy is a Spy is if you keep shooting them and they drop dead; until then, they don't bleed and they don't lose their disguise. Of course, while doing this they can't actually retaliate in any way and are secretly hoping you'll give up and assume they're friendly. This is mainly because in TFC people just got used to shooting everyone and anyone on their own team, looking out for the blood or the grunt that'd give them away as an enemy. It kind of made it impossible to actually be disguised, while the new system gives them at least a fighting chance.

Yeah, the Spy's tendency to not spill blood when shot makes it a real pain to identify them. Playing as a Pyro is good though as you can just lash every friendly you see with a bit of flame, and if they're a Spy they'll immediately set alight. I've not played with the Spy too much, but when I did a few days ago I really enjoyed it. The hardest part was learning to use the cloak conservatively, only using it to get past specific enemies and remembering to turn it off. Heck, after a while I was treating it more like a game of Metal Gear Solid; it's so much easier said than done doing a bit of Solid Snake against real people. I largely see the Spy as something I use for just one spawn or two though, when there's a particularly fiendish sentry or something that's holding the entire team back. It makes more sense to just go sort it out and then re-spawn as your usual class than let your team spend hours tying to get through it.

Of course, for such a change of language to occur there'd have to actually be a majority of people using the new/incorrect/whatever term. I've still not come across anyone describing Gears of War as an FPS in my day-to-day life, both online and in real-world conversations. I think there's probably about 0.1% of those who've played the game actually using the term (that's still a good few thousand people and probably being generous), which kind of nullifies the entire argument in this specific case. Regarding this, though: I think language has proven a number of times that it doesn't have to make any sense. The "couldn't care less" example someone game above is a great example of this, with a huge amount of Americans still using the term "could care less", even though it quite blatantly means exactly the opposite of how the phrase is meant to be used. It continues to amaze me that this continues and continues, but if most other Americans understand the phrase how it's meant to be understood then is it really incorrect? Bluh. Language.

I said that's what I'd personally call it. You know, keeping in line with this whole semantics thing. Naturally, 'first-person shooter' is the most appropriate descriptor -- as I said earlier. Half-Life 2 is an excellent example of a game that's entirely on rails. Throughout pretty much the whole game you're unable to deviate from the intended course; granted, you're not literally held into place like you are in Time Crisis, but it's not far off. It is a completely linear game. Incidentally, 'on-rails' is a term that was used by the gaming press and players to describe Half-Life 2 both in conversation and reviews when it came out. There's another one for us to all argue about!

Kind of. It's really becoming a mish-mash when you think of it like that though. To me, calling Gears of War an FPS when there's a much simpler way to categorise it (and similar games) just doesn't sit right. What I'd personally call Gears of War is an on-rails shooter, which is comparable to an on-rails shooter such as Half-Life 2, Quake, or any other game like that. I'd put Max Payne squarely into that category too, but definitely not Tomb Raider which I'd call an action adventure game. GTA is a whole different animal and defies any particular categorisation, hence the widespread use of the term 'GTA clone'. PS: I did mean the massive list of games below the first part of that page, and not just the few at the top.

This all seems a bit mental to me. The most obvious solution seems to be to describe games that play like a typical shooter, such as Team Fortress, Doom, Quake, and whatever else you like, as a 'shooter'. You then generally prefix 'first-person' or 'third-person' depending on which it actually is. Up until Gears of War this seems to be what the vast majority of people did, and to be honest I hadn't even noticed people were more often than not calling Gears of War an FPS. Is it really as widespread as you lot make out? I mean, Max Payne was very much like Gears Of War in that it allowed FPS-like aiming but was a third-person game; as such, it was generally referred to as a third-person shooter because that's exactly what it was. Games like Tomb Raider or Metal Gear Solid still have heavy use of guns, but don't allow twitch aiming like an FPS. These types of games generally aren't referred to as first- or third-person shooters, and instead something like 'action adventure' or 'stealth' is used. I have to agree that using 'FPS' as a general classification for games like Gears of War is entirely retarded because games that have just as much of an 'FPS feel' have come out over the years and not had the same treatment. I can't see the use of 'FPS' as a descriptor of such games lasting, if it is in popular usage at all. Indeed, when I talk to any guy in real life about such a game, we'd use a phrase like "shooting game", both knowing immediately what type of game it is.

Yes. Although I was looking forward to that remake in 2004 and it's now 2007, which has sapped my enthusiasm somewhat. By the time it's done they'll have to remake it again to keep up! Hopefully that'll slap some of the newer Source tech into there like motion blur and HDR to spice it up, if it does come out.
