  3. Braid

Isn't he like the Colin McKenzie of the game industry ?
  4. [GDC]Real nice news from Sony

I agree with Spaff, but I wonder if the GDC is the place to do this ... I mean, it's primarly a place for developers to meet, right ? So I guess it's not that far fetched to say that Sony, by presenting trendy projects like a social network application and a cute non-violent multiplayer game, is trying to get the developers' sympathy back rather than the consumers'.
  5. Beside Twilight Princess, there is not a lot of *real games* on the Wii - assuming this means games with a serious scenario and that you can play hours in a row. This makes Wii's owners sad apparently, because it's believed these *real games* need to be the future of Nintendo's console... ...and I don't think so : the Wii is the first social gaming console ever, it would be stupid to put that in jeopardy by doing what everybody and their mothers already do. Have you played Twilight Princess while friends were at your house? I did and we stopped playing after 15 minutes because it was boring the hell out of us. So, as a single player game,Wii Sports was remained unchallenged for approximatively 100 hours. I don't think the only problem is that Twilight Princess is bad or that the genre makes it impossible for people to watch and enjoy; I think the issue is that with what you could do with the wiimote everybody felt it was completely stupid to play such a game. So, here, the Wii should leave blockbuster games to other platforms (the XBox 360 and the PC know how to do this very well) and investigate social gaming : games that you can enjoy under 30 sec and leaves content after 30mins; games that are really enjoyable from an audience point of view. I'd like to think that games with a strong sense of scenario can be appealing to a non-playing audience, but I don't think it can be done. Not with the current controllers philosophy or in a everyday environment. So, should I shut the fuck up or do I have a point ? EDIT : the original title was Does the Wii nead *real games* ? . Hence, Rodi's jokes just below. I changed it because I misspelled need and I didn't want to make any possible gross pun in the trend of what's been denounced lately
  6. Hi, here are some babies

I was searching for an old post and I noticed this : is the current image at the top of the post what it was when Yufster posted ?
  7. To All Idle Thumbers that'll be at GDC...

So, in two generations time, Francis Bacon's vision will become a reality ? I don't know how to feel about that.
  8. PS3 SixAxis/rumble U-turn imminent?

What have they done right in this case ? They only paid 2 years late a fee of USD90 million decided on by the District Court presiding over the infringement case... they haven't done something right, they just did what the law required of them.
  9. Grindhouse (2007)

Watching Once upon a Time in Mexico is like watching Rodriguez raping happily some great ideas and a magnificient duo of actors just because making a good & honest movie isn't what's hot anymore.
  10. Post You Pic Thread

Eh, funnily enough, 'essence' means oil in French.
  11. PS3 SixAxis/rumble U-turn imminent?

God knows I can't stand how Sony can't seem to be able to be clear about anything and abide for its errors, but here he's an attempt to find an explanation to what going on. It's messy, but I hope it will bring people more aware of what's going on to share their insight. First, let's assume Sony's exec weren't replace by robots which just badly mimic the characters they impersonate. Here's what all things related to the PS3 make me feel like : Sony execs are trying to dodge as many bullets as they can during the 8 months following the US release of the PS3 , as this period was supposed to be the phase at which the PS3, while not being release, would see its kinks solved. Here's what I think happened : around April 2006, Sony was aware that the PS3 wouldn't be ready for release at the launch date that was fixed at the time. But because the Xbox 360 was beginning to really threaten Sony's market (loss of exclusivity [GTA 4 in June], better games coming up, XboxLive success) and because Nintendo was coming back from the dead to create a new edge in the next gen, Sony felt they had to release their new console-type hardware late 2006. The issue is that the hardware, the middleware and the production means weren't ready to face such schedules... and might have been if the product had been release a year later(end of the lawsuit with the, better production chain, better hardware definition, sleek backward compatibility,BluRay disponibility); but this wasn't an option for I think Sony execs felt that once the Wii had been released every Sony customer would turn to the 360, seeing it had a huge game library and former Sony third party developers coming to Microsoft platform. Another thing, is that the PS3 doesn't seem to be a bad piece of hardware in itelf. What I suspect is that the market wasn't open to the new kind of "entertainment solution"[couldn't find something less bullshit sounding] that the PS3 is offering : the PS3 isn't a console, it's something else and, in a sense, something 'bigger' but whose cost is so high, that it can't be possibly be advertised as a 'regular console'... but because Sony had to surf on the success of the PS2, Sony labeled the system as a successor to this legend... which is a big screw up in my opinion; as if Nintendo had called the Revolution/Wii the Gamecube 2. Here's my 2 not-so-well-informed cents about this
  12. Heroes in a half shell

I was offered a Teenage Mutant Turtle costume at Christmas when I was something like 8 or 9 : geez, it was the first gift I unwarped in the morning and I went to play with it literally for hours before returning to see what was left. I think it was Michaelangelo's costume, with the nunchaku and whatnot; it even had a plastic turtle shell and 'two toes' socks... I should check in the photo album; to see if I remember it right.

  16. I'm too rich in Oblivion

D'you mean the new Bard's Tale or the old one ? I only played the demo of the recentone... and really didn't find anything interesting except for the dialog system.
  17. I'm too rich in Oblivion

I wouldn't say the problem is economic balance, I'd say that someone has to rethink the inventory system and the way monsters 'drop' items. RULE 1 Peons and wild animals don't have any income, some of them even eat their own excrements out of misery. So no gold, no coins, no jewels, no shiny stuff. RULE 2 There's no way Mr Adventurer would run around in the wild with lots of cash on himself : it's heavy and it's noisy. Plus, looting money on corpses is cheap. RULE 3 Merchant from Resident Evil 4 kind of character won't do : no one can carries around the means to improvise a putsch after the tea party just because they might feel like it. I saw walking skeletons dropping gold in Ultima IX. Walking skeletons for Christ sake!
  18. Xbox 360 Live Arcade

Blood Money is a masterpiece : this game is so freakin' good, it makes you feel that everything you do is having consequences on the characters and the world. Also, in Pro-mode, it's like the best RPG ever : no stats, no skills but you have to act your character and the ones you impersonate perfectly to get out of each mission alive.
  19. New people: Read this, say hi.

The Urban Dictionary tells me it means "Thank Fuck For That "

    Fairie isn't a french world.
  21. Does the Wii nead *real games* ?

Do you really think that most people bought a Wii to play the same kind of games they had on the 360 or on a Playstation systems but with a different controller schemes ? I'm not sure they have. I've always thought that the Wii would create another kind of gaming entertainment... in the same way consoles are different from PC, I've thought that, maybe, the Wii would be different from other consoles. In fact, I wouldn't have said that several weeks ago, but I'm beginning to doubt that the Wii's controller paradigm can be eficient for these *real games* : I've played a bit of Red Steel and Zelda, and I didn't feel I could keep on playing for hours. Maybe it's because of these titles, but having played a bit of this and that I have yet to find a game that pretend to be a grand solo experience and that manage to be so. But, anyway, it's in my nature to be agnostic, so I'll just stand on this until a particular game proves me wrong.
  22. Finally upgraded Windows

Maybe the NSA thing is just a direct consequence of NSA providing strong advice on the S-box of the DES algorithm back in the days when they couldn't reveal they had discovered differential cryptoanalysis before everyone else... and that was to improve the system, not to create some backdoor. So, no need to be more paranoid that the day-to-day level... you know, the one in which you freak out about how fucked up everything is.
  23. Let's Talk About Rayman Again

More screenshots of Raving Rabbits on the DS : Meh, 'could be good.

  25. Finally upgraded Windows

I'm using Vista to read your messages Nachimir, thus they are now corrupted. You are a part of it now! Mwahahahaha! Vista is good, not great : all games that I've tried are running at least as fast as on XP providing they are DirectX; OpenGl is an issue and that sucks. Triple Boot Unbuntu/Vista/Xp rules.
