  1. I enjoyed the first season of Downton Abbey, despite it being melodramatic at times. I think the second season is heading to the US at the beginning of next year. My brother and sister-in-law have started watching it already, and they report that the melodrama has been ratcheted up and even includes a taste of amnesia. Not promising.

  2. I just got it this past weekend, and am enjoying it very much. I've never understood diplomacy in the Civ games. Is it actually possible to make a deal with another Civ that doesn't involving giving them everything you own in exchange for a couple cinnamon sticks?

  3. How far were you in the game?

Very early. Currently, I just have time to play a couple hours a week.

The new alchemy system is pretty annoying, as is the inventory. How many potions do I already have? Don't know. How many of the ingredient I'm currently using do I have left? Don't know. What direction is that fucking symbol pointing? Don't know. Also, why'd they get rid of the alcohol collecting? That was a blast. Way more entertaining than lugging around timber and cloth.

  4. The armor that gets imported is great, though. I'm guessing it's the reason I didn't have a difficult time with the combat in the prologue, because I generally suck at fighting in games, so it wasn't a matter of skill.

Speaking of equipment, I dislike the upgrade system. If I use my sweet upgrade now, I won't be able to use it when I find a better accessory. If I have the greatest accessory ever, what if I find an incredible upgrade, but now have no more open slots? In the end, I'm probably not going to upgrade anything till 10 minutes from the end of the game.

  5. I don't know why I got such a kick out of this, but I love how the characters don't hold doors open for each other. After I saved Zoltan and Dandelion, I stood back and watched in amusement as they, accompanied by Triss and Vernon Roche, filed one by one into the tavern each slamming the door in the other's face. How rude.

  6. So, is there no combo system? I saw no mention of one in the manual. I miss the group combat style. Are the only ways of hitting multiple enemies bombs, traps, signs, and those special X moves?

  7. I haven't had time to play much, so I got to the first bits of combat just now. I don't know, it doesn't seem that difficult. It's irritatingly difficult to target specific enemies, but it seems like you just hammer the left-mouse button for the weak enemies and use E and the right-mouse button for the heavy ones. It's annoying that there's no way to see the keybindings in game. I'm going to go read the manual now to make an attempt at not being completely clueless.

  8. If the religious aspects annoy you, I'd suggest you stop watching now

No kidding. I loved the first two seasons (with some exceptions in the second), but the third season was just god-awful. Not that the overdose of mystic bullshit was the season's only issue.

  9. Very true. I only played half of the first Dragon Age. When I first started playing the game, I was excited and thought it was going to be a more modern RPG with strong Baldur's Gate influences. I don't care how similar the combat mechanisms are, that game is nothing like Baldur's Gate. I was holding out hope up until I reached the "big city" only to discover it consisted pretty much entirely of a small, lame marketplace, random street encounters, and the same boring quests. A far cry from the glory of Athkatla. Granted, I haven't played many RPGs in recent years, but the only one that I've played that's even come close to capturing that same atmosphere (and holding my attention long enough to complete) is The Witcher.

  10. Finally borrowed Deadwood on DVD from a friend. I miss out on a lot of great shows and movies because I mostly read and game instead. Man, this show is as great as advertised, I saw Ian McShane on Kings first, but after this, I think I have a mancrush on him or something lol.

No kidding. I adore him in Deadwood. Have you seen True Grit yet? The dialog is reminiscent of Deadwood, though with fewer cocksuckers.
