  1. wow, Exodus pt 2 was phenomenal. It was probably the best action episode that they've ever done.

There were so many unbelievably awesome shots: Galactica lurking in the clouds, Galactica plunging down to earth while launching vipers, Pegasus cruising to save the day and ultimately being destroyed... so, so awesome. There were several outstanding character scenes as well, like Tigh and Ellen and Gaius and Getta. I'm listening to the podcast for the episode now, and now I finally get why the New Caprica storyline was so disappointingly truncated -- money. It really sucks that they didn't have more money to flesh it out as much as it deserved. Oh well.

  2. I've played about an hours worth of Contact now. It's absolutely fantastic. I was beginning to start to prepare myself to be slightly let down after seeing some of the reviews (not that it's gotten terrible reviews by any means), but they're all wrong. Contact is a blast.

Phoenix Wright is one of my all time favorite games, but I think I'm going to hold out for the US release. I should have plenty to keep me busy in the mean time.

  3. Phoenix Wright 2 also coming out soon. I feel reunited with adventure games.

    DS, I love you.

I think it's supposed to come out the beginning of January in the US, but I hear the Japanese version that comes out next week, I think, will have selectable languages. I wonder if the translation is going to be the same.

  4. It seems like there are a ton of top notch DS games coming out here all at once. I'm having a hard time deciding what I'm going to buy. I'm, hopefully, going to be able to pick up Contact today, provided my ebgames has it in. Then next week Touch Detective comes out, and Children of Mana the week after. Elite Beat Agents, Yoshi's Island 2, and Final Fantasy III all come out early November. Then in December there's Hotel Dusk, Portrait of Ruin, and Kirby. I wonder when the new Pokemon is going to be released in the US.

  5. Do yourself a favor and just buy Planescape. A copy of it and BGII should be on everyone's shelves.

I'm looking forward to see what Uru is going to be like when they re-launch it. I heard that they've changed some stuff in it. My biggest peeve with it are its absolutely horrendous controls. If that's been fixed I think I could get into it.

  6. I like Gametap, but I don't play enough to justify a subscription. I heard a rumor that after they get it running for Macs they're going to do linux next. If they do I'll subscribe without a seconds thought. That would be just about the best thing ever.

    How's Sam & Max?

  7. I really enjoyed the first couple episodes, but I think it's been pretty much downhill from there. All of the high-brow moral speeches seem out of place. Though I'm not enjoying it nearly as much now, I plan on watching it for at least a couple more weeks. I really enjoy the chemistry between Matt and Danny.

  8. A reasonable comparison can be made between these three episodes so far and the the pegasus/resurrection ship episodes last season; a major shakeup to the "status quo" of the series, as it were. IIRC, many of the main characters were acting in ways that I thought to be off-character; Adama betraying a superior officer, Roslin advocating assasination etc.

I'm not sure if that's the greatest comparison. The Kain trilogy has some of the greatest and most powerful character moments in the entire series. I don't think there's been anything even near as powerful as of yet in the third season. This doesn't make the episodes bad though as not every episode can be a Pegasus or Resurrection Ship. Also, I don't think any of the characters were acting out of character in the Kain trilogy. Roslin always has been a hawkish pragmatist to Adama's idealism. Ok, it might be a little of a strech for Adama to actually plan out the assasination, but he does have very very deep loyalties to his crew and the fleet. It wasn't the first time that he put them first before standard protocol.

  9. I've got to be honest, right now I'm feeling a bit disappointed with how season three is going. It could just be me, but I don't really feel emotionally connected to any of the characters anymore. It's been, what, a year and four months since the last meaningful window into their lives? The characters appear to have changed so much, but I don't feel them anymore. Instead of getting to know them again we're just shown a couple of scenes of them doing shit and all a sudden everything is supposed to be clear. It seems very un-Battlestar like to cut straight to the action without the emotional build first. As a result, for me, nothing that has happened so far really has the weight that it should. The scenes on Galactica are almost laughable, but, besides that, even the suicide bombing bit at the end of the first episode didn't really hit me all that hard. I think having so many different characters has finally gotten to them. I gave them more slack in the first couple episodes because I figured they had so much to get in that I shouldn't really expect them to spend much time developing where the individual characters were at now, but after this past episode I'm beginning to wonder. I mean, half of it was pure padding yet there still wasn't much in the way of meaningful character development, or rather character establishment. What they should have done was start the season one episode earlier and establish who the characters are and what is going on. I don't feel the oppressiveness of the Cylon rule or the lostness of the Galactica like I should, and it's disappointing. I still have faith that the season will improve as it progresses though, especially after the are reunited and a couple more characters bite the dust.

Just so you guys know my friend that I qouted last week isn't a complete idiot, here's what he had to say when I was discussing this with him.

Yeah I saw it and I have to agree with alot of that, the charachters

just don't seem to be all that interesting, oh sure there's all sorts

of stuff going on, they have to keep the baby secret, that person

might die, and she's been helping the enemy, but I don't care. They've

kinda taken away everything that I ever liked about the charachters.

I've also just kinda noticed that the charachters are really

inconsistant in how they react. I mean it goes into a situation and

you're thinking that they'll respond one way while they do the

opposite, and it does that without much reason as to why. Roslan is a

good example some episodes she's looking to perserve life do the right

thing, others she wants to kill and lie and cheat. What ever happend

to Tom being the bad guy anyways? It wasn't even explained he starts

off as a murdering terrorist who's willing to kill to take control and

suddenly he's on the good team. It'd be fine if they took the time to

tell why. Like starbuck, that was a good job there in how they

explained her change of heart, but none of the other charachters get

that. I agree an episode before the first two would have been really

good. That oracle scene felt really hoaky and the fact that she was

allways licking her hand all the time just made it even stranger.

You know most shows they just have a few charachters and they do a

good job of focusing on one charachter for a show every once in a

while, but they'res just two many to remember in bsg and you don't

really know more then the few key charachters, btw I'm pissed that

roslan is still alive, I got all excited about that last episode.

  10. I didn't think Exodus part 1 in and of itself was the greatest. There was a good bit of padding at the beginning and most of the episode was just set-up for things to come. The next episode, on the other hand, promises to be a knock out. I can't wait. I loved D'Anna's dream sequence. The visuals on this show never cease to impress me.

  11. Yeah, I think it's really interesting that they haven't shown much of the black cylon. It makes me wonder if there's something up with him. At first I just thought that they were having trouble getting him back, but then he all a sudden turned up for that one scene towards the end of the second episode. Suspicious. As for D'Anna,

I like her, but you won't have to worry about her past the mid-season mark.

I see her specialization as sort of the front man. She seems to be the voice of the Cylons.

A friend of mine just watched the first two episodes, and had a much different response to it than we did, so I thought I'd share what he had to say about it just to get a different perspective.

Yeah it makes sense for the story, but if you see this as a commentary

on the war in Iraq it's a bit different. I mean Bsg was headed in a

direction, and then suddenly they're stuck on a planet captured and

they call there resistence the Insurgency. You don't calll your

resistance to an occupying power an insurgency, you call yourselves

freedom fighters or rebels. When the guy blew himself up at the

graduation, right before that she was shaking one of the guys next to

him and saying "congradulations sargent." That's hitting to close to

home when plenty of military officers have been killed by suicide

bombers in Iraq, who also target the local police, also the talk about

hitting the market. Tigh and the chief have grown beards, can you

think of who they could stand for?

This entire thing is a commentary on the Iraq war. Cylons are the

American badguys who are publicly trying to win the hearts and minds

of the people while secretly detaining and tortuturing the innocent.

The Insurgency... well it's the insurgency, they're the good guys

who's actioins, nomatter how bad are demanded by the times and so

justified. The collaborators are those people in Iraq who are helping

the americans, like the chief says the shows stand point is that these

    people diserve to be hung.

If you look at the premise of Bsg with them searching for earth and

then suddenly stoping for a year to jump down to the planet and get

into this situation, it does look like they're just stoping the show

to take time to make a statement on Iraq.

  12. For the love! Will someone fracking kill Kat already!?! :( It's going to be hard to handle a season with her as CAG. Other than that   . I'm particularly enjoying Tigh and the Starbuck subplot.

Laura dead? Or are they going to be, as Duncan puts it, "moving the car back onto the cliff"? I'm guessing that she probably makes it some how if only because I'm sure they'd give her a much more built-up send-off. Plus, it's only the second episode. However, I wouldn't be at all surprised if she ends up dying later this season, though she might make it to the next. At some point RDM is sure to make good on his threats of a cancer relapse. Personally, I hope her death is in some way related to the survival of Sharon's child.

On another note, do you think Gaius only sees the Six in his mind while the real Six is either dead or not near by? He seemed a little surprised to see her again. Hopefully their relationship will be fleshed out more soon.

One other thing, I can't remember, did Hotdog die last season or is he still around?
