Looks like they've added the GDC 2011 stuff now. There's page after page of hour-long lectures about everything from Automated Level of Detail Generation for HALO: REACH to I Shot You First: Networking the Gameplay of HALO: REACH. Myself, I'm still busy going through last year's stuff. I've watched a lot of interesting Uncharted 2 talks, and just finished Make 'Em Laugh, which is about comedy in games and features Tim Schafer, Rhianna Pratchett and... wait for it... Sean Vanaman! If you're into games and can't attend the real thing (and maybe even if you can), this is thing comes heavily recommended and approved by me as something you might like.

This is going to be great:

It's definitely easy, especially if you spent some time training guys before doing the story missions. That way you can just wave your hand slightly and everyone in Rome dies.

Draw distance or spawn distance? I could see across town in the Xbox360 version.

I finished this a couple of days ago, and think it's just an awesome game. I'd list all the cool things, but why bother. It's an improvement in every way – even the multiplayer was fun, the little I played anyway. Being a sucker for achievements I tried to get them all, and was very pleasantly surprised when I found that most of the achievements were used in the right way. For example, you don't have to get a gold on all the challenge levels, only a couple. This way they get to show you what they're about, and if you think they're fun, that's cool. If not, you still get an achievement. The same goes for the guild challenges. They make you do a couple of them for the achievement, but don't do the mistake of forcing all the cool stuff they made! down your throat. Of course there's one for getting all 101 flags, but they do help you by showing you on the map where each one of them can be found, so instead of being a giant pain in the ass, it's a fun thing to do while getting from A to B. I almost never used the tunnels, instead planning routes via treasures, feathers, flags, stores I could renovate, etc. Actually, I think they could've taken the whole shop quest thing even further, forcing me to loot treasure and send assassinos out on missions, earning me sweet loot I could use to buy more information and equipment. What was the deal with the paintings? It would've been awesome if they allowed you to use the Italian voices only whilst in the Animus. If they had huge balls like Chris, they'd make you get used to everything being in Italian, and then when you pull out the cyberjack, bam! everything's in English.

It's cheap compared to four thousand dollars.

I signed up for the GDC vault last night, and holy motherfucking shit there's a lot of stuff in there. I started off with a post-mortem for Uncharted 2 from GDC 2010, and found the interface and presentation very pleasing. There doesn't seem to be anything from 2011 there yet, but seeing as there must be hundreds of hours of everything from general game design to specific implementation stuff, and audio recording all the way back to 1994 or whatever, I should be good for at least until I die. It's really cool to hear people talking about their games in an honest way, recognizing flaws and negatives in addition to whatever's good about their games. For people who attend these things regularly I guess it's not a huge deal, but for me it's like being let backstage at a rock concert, only it's game development instead of rock, and more of a convention than a concert.

EclipseCon? Sounds sweet.

toblix Complains About the "Recently completed video games" Thread
toblix posted a topic in Idle Banter
Here's a suggestion: Instead of discussing lots of different and unrelated games in a single thread, if you have something to say about a game, dig up the old thread for the game, or, if one doesn't exist, be the one that creates it. Then just post in that thread. The discussion is put in a relevant context instead of being grouped by the most useless property that someone just finished it. -
You really should give it a couple more episodes. It starts off as a pretty mediocre comedy show, but gets really good. I don't get that it's too awkward, though. I love Gervais' stuff, but the comedy in Community is much more explicit, which, for me at least, makes it less awkward.
-
Just finished the first season of Community, and this is definitely one of the best comedy shows ever made. It starts of okay, becomes very good after a couple of episodes, and, like Hermie observed, towards the end of the season it's just ridiculously great. The paintball episode was so good that I laughed.

This post exemplifies why the Recently Completed Games thread is terrible.

It looks like they've used a procedural ramenhutch generator.

I have a G9 at home, and an M500 at work, and I would say they're both perfectly fine for gaming.

There is a more frustrating thing: reading those interviews. There are too many sites where an interview is just letting some PR guy read from the back of the box. Thanks for not being like that.

GDC 2011: The Idle Thumbs Conf Grenade: Games Kasavin
toblix replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
The story was fantastic, and you didn't come off at all bitter or disappointed. I always assumed stories like that (games that never were, Disney, etc.) could never be told, so thanks for sharing. -
Okay, I will read those.
-
I hope you're joking. My taste in anything has never been anything to go by. For example, I didn't like that game Vanquish, which is great.

I read all these books tying into the whole Dark Tower universe/world making sure to follow a dependency graph so as to get as many of the references as possible. A lot of it was fantastic, and I don't regret doing the "project" as a whole, but the last Dark Tower book (I believe it was called The Dark Tower) disappointed me to such an extent it almost ruined the whole thing (i.e. the disappointment traversed and subsequently spanned the entirety of the dependency graph. I think this was discussed in another thread, if you care to search for it.
-
If asked, would you say you... recommend this film?
-
That reminds me of the Dark Tower connection chart I followed a couple of years ago, that made sure I got all the references in the right order and also ended in disappointment.

Guys guys I dounf another one.
