  1. In one of the mythbusters episodes, Adam Savage exclaims "that's the second biggest [something] I've ever seen!" Not sure if it was a reference to Monkey Island
  2. Tomb Raider

So they want to make Tomb Raider: Other M?
  3. General Video Game Deals Thread

http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-CA/dailydeal/day5/ Although i imagine everyone here already has it, or at least one of the sequels. I think i'll redownload it to give the complete mod a try.
  4. Tomb Raider

I would rather see the tomb raider franchise revision itself as cartoony windwaker-esque thing, at least visually (much like what they did with the shorts for gametap)
  5. General Video Game Deals Thread

Normally I would avoid a game with install limits, but at $7.50 I can't complain. Plus I rather like their deactivation scheme: install on 6th machine, the 1st installation is automatically deactivated. no need to worry about hardware failure or forgetting to deactivate before formatting...
  6. Broken Sword: Director's Cut

Yeah, I didn't think any of the puzzles in DC is difficult, but most of them only make sense within the confines of a adventure game.
  7. Recettear: An Item Shop's Sale

Wait... if the girl's name is Recette, what's with the extra "ar" in the title? is that explained in the game? I'm kinda interested in this game, but I dont think I have time for another RPG in my life. Thanks for that clarification. I would've misconstrued that for something else
  8. Future Wars

Oh man, I used to love this game when I was a kid. Especially all the "hurray"s you get at the end. spoiler! I don't know if it was lazy translation or the writers couldn't come up with anything better and decided, 'aw fuck it, hurrays all around!'
  9. The problem isn't with speakers... the problem is with headphones. Unless you have 5.1 headphones (expensive, and don't work that well), headphones only output 2 channels. The only positional cue you can get from it is left and right. Even in stereo, it's not correct: in real life (when you play with speakers), sound coming from left speaker is still audible in your right ear. in fact, the volume of the sound you hear would be about the same, it's just time delayed a bit and that's how your brain decides which direction the sound comes from. not volume. Plus, for true surround gaming, those virtual surround technologies use HRTF (basically biaural mix using human ear shape) to downmix 5.1 or 7.1 audio into stereo, giving you the same (or better, if your speaker setup sucks) experience as speakers. It makes a world of difference. edit: also... as you said, there are games that do its own HRTF for headphone users. Civ4 for example, which is ironic considering the game doesn't need positional audio. Most game developers figure nobody cares about that stuff and leave it to sound cards to take care of it. On-board cards usually don't have such functionality though. and also... (i probably should've mentioned this first) Unlike what you suggested, it's not turning stereo sound into surround; it's turning surround into stereo.
  10. I think sandforce ssds at 60gb cost around $100~120. They're ridiculously fast, even faster than intel's x25m (just before sandforce controllers came out, it used to be the bench to beat). If you play games with headphones on, and if you play a lot of 3d games where positional audio matters, then getting a decent soundcard is a must. look for ones that say cmss3d or "dolby headphone" or "dts surround sensation" (demo of cmss3d - watch the video with headphones) dcB9faNrz_M but if you only use speakers, onboard audio may be good enough.
  11. yeah, that's what I meant. doh
  12. Yeah, build yourself. probably 50%~100% cheaper than getting an alienware at equal specs. it's so simple nowadays - no need to play around with jumpers or bios or anything (unless something goes wrong).
  13. dBnniua6-oM I might have found this video on this very forum.
  14. Control Schemes

I'm hoping that the next gen consoles will have a trackball built into the controllers.
  15. Control Schemes

I couldn't care less what the control scheme looks like as long as it's able to translate my intentions accurately. Complex set of "verbs" tied to different set of keystrokes like a flightsim wouldn't deter me from enjoyment (though it would take considerable more time to build muscle memory). It is of my opinion that people can get used to any bad things. Context-sensitive buttons are a wonderful thing but only if it makes sense. In modern P&C adventure games, for example, i don't think anybody complained about amalgamation of verb coins "turn on," "turn off," "open," "close," etc into a single "use" button. "Do Something" button like in Fable 2/3(?) is a big no-no in my opinion. I would feel completely helpless if I don't feel I'm in control of my character. A bit off-topic but it annoys me very much that almost every PC game uses space bar for jump. I played Doom and Jedi Knight more than any other shooter, so I prefer space bar for "use" and right click for jump.
  16. Keyboard

I have a kinesis ergonomic keyboard but I spend more time gaming than typing, so ironically it hurts my arms more than a traditional keyboard Logitech's G13 looks mighty tempting, because it has a little thumbstick you can use for analogue movement instead of the old fashioned WASD. edit: Gah, apparently G13's thumbstick isn't analogue. that sucks.
  17. Game cover designs

Anybody remember the Wheel of Time cover that had transparent overlay that was mistakenly printed foggy white, rendering the indented cardboard piece behind it invisible and completely useless? Good times.
  18. Good Old GOG

It's more or less a wake-up call to all who rely on digital download services to maintain their games collection. It's like an insurance salesman telling you "your house's burned down... Just kidding! but don't you wish you had fire insurance now?"
  19. Good Old GOG

If Steam did this I would be fuming, but I just can't get mad at GoG
  20. Good Old GOG

I don't care if it's a PR stunt - I hope they come back. There are still many many games in their catalogue I want to buy. (independence war series for example)
  21. Monitor advice

HDMI and DVI-D carry exact same signal sans audio stream... but looking at the dell uk site 23" ultrasharp isn't even available so it's all moot :\ I'd recommend HP ZR22 or something instead but it doesn't have HDMI either. A lot of modern monitors seem to be abandoning HDMI in favour of DisplayPort it looks like.
  22. Monitor advice

True, but you could always use VGA for the PC and use HDMI-to-DVI adapter for your console. Unless your video card sucks, the visual differences are undetectable on VGA. You might lose HDCP but I don't know if that's important to you. I don't recommend LG anymore... I used to be a big fan of their monitors because only 5~6 years ago the colour reproduction and viewing angles were unparalleled (at least in the price range), but looking at their latest monitors, they've regressed into using very lowquality TN panels it seems. Maybe they decided to split their product line into premium and consumer models like Dell - I have no idea.
  23. Monitor advice

Dell ultrasharps over 24" are expensive, but 23" isn't! (only $230 here in canada) Avoid TN panels like the plague, and go for IPS or better http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2311h.htm
  24. WTF is Telltale's new game?

Or they're cheating. It could be the first texas hold'em video game in history to allow cheating.
  25. Worms reloaded

I'm playing with an xbox controller which is pretty okay for this game, but it's annoying that you have to use your mouse to navigate through the main menu (i hate switching between mouse & controller during a game). Anyway, haven't been able to play a multiplayer match without being dropped out with extreme lag. I guess I'll just enjoy the campaign until it's sorted out.
