I don't think Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale aged very well. They were amazing back in 1998 or whatever, but I can't imagine myself playing through them again (Torment and BG2 raised the bar so much higher). BG2, though, defeated me thoroughly. I spent at least 100 hours on the thing over the past 10 years, but I'm still on chapter 3 in 7-chapter story. And that's not counting the expansion.

They're designed from ground up to be an unholy combination of gambling and pyramid scheme and hello kitty. Evil i don't know. Deceptive maybe.

I was one of the software devs. Tools and plugins and stuff.

Gnomeo & Juliet Cuz I worked on it. It's not as bad as it sounds.

Are they trying to start a trend of "dumb" adventure game heroes?
Jayel replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
I played through the original Space Quest for the first time recently and I don't know why or how Roger Wilco turned into a klutz in the sequels. in the first game there's little indication to his level of intelligence. He seems pretty non-descriptive generic hero, and he could've easily gone the other way. I guess it's hard to imagine a guy who can voluntarily step off the ledge and fall to his own death being not dumb, but still... -
I suppose that's what most people buy them for, but I think the open hardware community is hoping that gp2x will (eventually) reach the critical mass for indie developers to port their games over and flourish. At least that's the only reason I could think of for putting in touchscreen or accelerometer. I imagine they're quite useless for emulated games, though I could be wrong.
-
Yeah I think the latest incarnation of GamePark consoles do touchscreen, accelerometer, vibration, full 3d acceleration, 6 hours of playtime, etc for measly $150. But Dingoo is almost half the price and I hear it's easier to develop for (wish I had some firsthand experience with it)

The CEO of Paradox was comparing this game to Monkey Island. Anybody who played it care to comment?
-
I see it more as a home console with screen attached. If you like playing console games but live in an environment where you have no exclusive access to the TV, this might be ideal. It's definitely not for me.

So, no more physical media? I like that. I also like the OLED screen. I can't imagine it being cheaper than 3DS, or PS3 even.

Have you ever played a game based on a franchise you don't really know?
Jayel replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
Dune II Didn't know it was based on a book (or books... or a movie) until much much later. The Darkness, while I was playing I had a vague recollection that it's based on a comic book of sort but wasn't sure. -
Dreamfall had a bunch of hacking minigames, as I recall (mostly boiling down to matching symbols). Moonbase Alpha has those concentric rings and draw within the lines type of minigames too, although they're technically repair minigames, not hacking...

If you're going to bootcamp to win7, i second the recommendation of macbook pro (or macbook air - neat little thing), but bear in mind it takes a bit of effort to use macbooks in public without looking like a douche. Asus is all around a sensible choice in my opinion.

I quite like The Spoony Experiment. his skits are lame, poorly edited, and badly acted (even more so than AVGN's or that guy with the glasses), but his love of classic games really shine through. His Ultima retrospective reviews, I thought, were fantastic.

The thing I remember most from the first Kyrandia game is the music from the beginning of the game. It isn't particularly awesome or anything, but it would often loop in my head like Yellow Submarine and drive me insane.

possible that the utility youre using doesn't count hidden files/swap files/restore files/cluster wastes/file records/etc

I dont know why people like the bombcast so much. Tried listening to it once or twice but I found it incredibly frustrating. Near last christmas, I stumbled upon the livestream of giantbomb crew playing old segacd games, but when they started playing rebel assualt and said something along the lines of "it was the only way to experience what it's like to be a pilot in star wars universe" I nearly yelled at my screen "what about x-wing you dumbshits"

a lot of pc ports seem to prefer a xbox controller though (mappings, onscreen icons, vibration, etc). If you have a xbox, I highly recommend getting a wireless receiver so you can use its controller on your pc. Official microsoft ones are hard to come by, but cheap chinese knockoffs can be found easily and works just as well. Some of them don't come with drivers, so just download it off of microsoft's website.

I have to admit this is the first time I've actually heard Tim's voice. He sounds way different from what I imagined.

Man, that sucks. And I sympathize - it scared me big time when I thought I couldn't play any more games (though my problems were nowhere near as serious as epileptic seizure). I'm surprised that Just Cause 2 was the trigger... I would've guessed a much faster paced and flashier game. Was it running on an aging hardware at a low framerate? ~30 or lower always hurts my brain.

I wish I had waited for the sneak peak objective to become a gimme. I almost bit my tongue off watching Brink and Homefront videos because they are so very terrible.

Yeah, it's the PC version. I think I'll try the OOO mod. Just googled it and it seems everybody's praising it and calling it the mod to get. Thanks. I keep forgetting that the PC modding community can make an undesired game desirable.

I've been avoiding Oblivion for this reason (shrink wrapped copy still sitting on my bookshelf), but then I recently found out that Dragon Age I've been enjoying immensely also does level scaling. I guess Bioware does it in a way that's not very noticeable. I don't know what to think anymore.

so I finished this game. By "finished" I mean I managed to pay off the debt and unlocked additional game modes which should've been available from the start (in my opinion). Pretty enjoyable game, although I absolutely hated the presentation and the UI. This game also employs the dead rising trick where if you fail, you start the game from the beginning but with all your stats intact. I guess you're supposed to keep failing over and over until eventually the game becomes easy enough to beat it? I managed to do it in the first go, but holy hell, was it hard! It seems like the type of game that would appeal to casual players, but there's nothing casual about its difficulty, especially the dungeon sections.
