  1. What would Molydeux

I wish there was a Toronto one.
  2. Giant Bomb Joins GameSpot

I thought that big media conglomerates buy a money losing venture so that they could change everything until it turns a profit?
  3. Why morality systems are a mistake

The only time I noticed morality system sticking out like a sore thumb was with The Old Republic. I was playing a guy who does good, but with "the end justifies the means" kinda attitude. I was getting both light and dark points and felt like i was getting punished for it. Seemed like a bit of missed opportunity too - i mean it's an MMO... they could've spent the beta periods collecting player decision paths and see what kind of personalities/archetypes emerge. Do something interesting with it maybe (i can't think of an example).
  4. Live Penguin Cam

I wonder if anybody asked the penguins if they prefer to stay in a warmer habitat.
  5. Crowdsourced Hardcore Tactical Shooter

I suppose once you make your pledge, you receive an NDA and a waiver in the mail? I have very little faith that these guys will succeed. Even if they reach their kickstarter goal, I don't know if the final product will ever see the light of day (crowdsourcing a commercial game? hrmmm... I dunno).
  6. Giant Bomb

How's life as a subscriber? Any regrets? I've been interested subscribing but never quite sold on it.
  7. Fund Tim Schafer's next game YOURSELF!

Do Monkey Island special editions use SCUMM? Maybe they could licence whatever that is - it supports all platform (except android) right? edit: or even Telltale engine.... it's 3d but seems to do 2d pretty well, lookin at puzzle agent games.
  8. Fund Tim Schafer's next game YOURSELF!

    LEAVE RON ALONE! :\
  9. It's refreshing to see a space sim again with none of that buy-low-sell-high nonsense, but giantbomb's quick look didn't really excite me. I am a big fan of x-wing/tie fighter/wing commander games, but I'm beginning to suspect that what I like about these games is what happens between missions, not the actual space combat.
  10. The Legend of Zelda

I don't know. of course bombing every tile is an archaic and terrible, but there's probably a better ways to handle it in modern era without visibly marking it. Maybe an NPC who casually mentions along the lines of "hey, did you hear that the wall next to the waterfall to the north is weak?" or something. Make the players earn the knowledge (or stumble upon it) rather than throwing it at the player. Like I was alluding to (badly) in my earlier posts, the problem that I see in this regard has less to do with handholding (or ease of play) and more to do with how I perceive the game world: the feeling that there's more to the world than meets the eye.
  11. The Legend of Zelda

If there are no more 'cracked walls' left by the time you're done playing through the game, then you're done with the game. Not just the main quest, but the entire game - the game world has nothing else to offer and it's made that very clear to you. I hate that.
  12. The Legend of Zelda

First thing pointed out in this article is, in my opinion, what "ruined" mainstream RPGs. Visible mechanics and accessibility takes away sense of exploration and immersion. Sometimes I miss the days when they had no quest logs and conversations with NPCs had to be carried out with a text parser - granted, there weren't much to do in those old games (and whether they're more fun is debatable), but it was much easier to lose myself fully immersed in the game world when there were no arrows telling me where to go, or dialog trees laying out all available course of action. I guess some games I still get that old school feeling - minecraft comes to mind for some reason. but it ain't no Ultima.
  13. Man, gone away for a couple days and this happens. I need to subscribe to your newsletter. Gravity Bone is one of my favourite things ever and so is Idle Thumbs podcast, so you have my support.
  14. V The Elder Scrolls

Wait, Skyrim doesn't do steam cloud save? Because I installed it on my netbook recently continued playing where I left off, without having to transfer save files.
  15. hmmm... I think the major difference between the games in the two camps you mentioned is that you haven't played the ones in the former group, and you have played the ones in the latter group. (in terms of how these games handle narrative and cutscenes, there's just so much overlap)
  16. If first-person cutscenes that unfold while you still have control over your character isn't your thing, you might like Deus Ex. Its cutscenes are mostly 3rd person and has dialogue choices too.
  17. Fund Tim Schafer's next game YOURSELF!

The world is a better place today.
  18. Star Wars The Old Republic

I participated in one of the weekend betas. It was a pretty magical experience and one of the best gaming moments I can remember. I was pathetically underleveled for the main quest where you get your spaceship, but I rushed like a mad man and got it (avoiding all encounters and sidequests and overall being pretty cowardly), with exactly 10 min. to spare before the beta shutdown. I traveled to Nar Shaddaa and there was not a single soul around. I was standing at the edge of the platform enjoying the nighttime vista as the time ran out and I was kicked. But I don't think I'll be getting it. I do like the idea of more story focused MMO experience, but the way Bioware did it, there's something very disconcerting about it that I can't put my finger on. It doesn't feel like a better MMO, but rather a worse singleplayer.
  19. General Video Game Deals Thread

I was objective whoring pretty hard, getting worthless coupons and crafting coal to get more worthless coupons, until I did the objective for this lousy F2P shooter Crime Craft and got Total War: Shogun 2 for it - just when I was beginning to lose all hope. I'm pretty happy now. FAQ for the coupons say that it does stack with existing discount unless otherwise noted, so maybe some of them are worth keeping.
  20. My monitor just melted

You may be right. Although in my personal experience it was a lot easier to find IPS panels in the past, then there was a complete drought for a few years, then it became easier to find them again (in desktops at least). It was pretty easy to find them on laptops too. old IBM thinkpads used to have them. Now none of them does (except x220 confusingly). I blame Lenovo and their cost cutting measures.
  21. My monitor just melted

All my monitors are now 16:9. I moved the task bar to the left side to regain some of the vertical estate, but I can't break the habit of looking at the bottom right corner whenever I want to know the time. So I put a clock widget there. Anyway, it's great that IPS made its way into public awareness now (maybe thanks to iPad?). It's funny how it used to be a lot easier to find non-TN displays 5+ years ago, but then people simply didn't know/care and there was a race to the bottom until all LCD display was shit. Now IPS and other better technologies are slowly making a comeback... not in laptops though, funnily enough.
  22. Psychonauts on Steam

I bought retail copy twice. At the time I thought I was supporting Double Fine, but chances are not a single cent went to them. Maybe I'll get it on steam now that DF owns it (or maybe I'll just wait for a sale ).
  23. Psychonauts on Steam

    No retail patch? Booo
  24. Hard Reset

Anybody else get the Prey vibe from this game?
