Idle Thumbs 300: Our Weird Monstrosity

Superbad was massively successful at the box office relative to its budget, though. For the time when it was out, it was one of those movies that you could assume most people to be familiar with, even if they hadn't seen it personally. It seems to me a cult movie is one that's in some way overlooked. Superbad may not be as universal as Star Wars or Harry Potter, but it was a Hollywood movie that essentially succeeded pretty straightforwardly on the terms it intended to, with a generally broad audience.

Hey folks! I'm not sure if the stereo separation was intentional this week or not but I went ahead and baked it down to mono and reuploaded it. So if you refresh your feed and redownload the file, it should be a bit more comfortable.

There's Three Moves Ahead, Designer Notes, less frequent episodes of Idle Thumbs. (Also Idle Weekend does have a lot of video game talk.)

Idle Weekend February 6, 2017: Batman Academy It's time to talk Batman! Well, sort of. Rob is having second thoughts about Batman: Arkham Origins, which prompts a discussion on games that give a very particular kind of feedback during play. Also, Superman Returns is an underrated movie. Discussed: Batman: Arkham Origins, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, Street Fighter V, Metal Gear Solid IV, GTR, Crazy Taxi, BioShock, BioShock 2, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X, Mafia 3, Papers Please, Superman Returns, Avatar: The Last Airbender Listen on the Episode Page Listen on Soundcloud Listen in iTunes

Important If True: Show Announcement Teaser
Chris replied to Chris's topic in Important If True Episodes
Mainly, the thing we're not planning on doing is "Here's what I've been watching/playing/reading, and some impressions about it." I'm sure if someone had some notable observation about a game that could actually turn out into a discussion that means something beyond the specific literal content of the game, particularly if it's something that's actually explicable without going into a ton of mechanical or lore detail, it would be fair game. In the most recent Thumbs episode, for instance, I think the Dr. Mario bit is an example of that. -
Weird! Maybe that was a really old practice. It definitely hasn't been that way in the time I've been listening to it.

Were you listening to episodes from the archive, or episodes that were current at the time? Because I'm pretty sure they don't put any ads at the beginning on newly-released shows; they wait until an episode has aged a bit before putting ads at the beginning.

Doesn't 99pi put all its ads at the end? I actually think of it as one of the less intrusive examples of ads in podcasts.

This is an amazing idea if you had the right director. David O. Russell feels like the obvious pick these days but I'm sure there are cleverer ideas.

Important If True: Show Announcement Teaser
Chris replied to Chris's topic in Important If True Episodes
Nope, on the most recent Idle Thumbs episode we asked readers to keep on sending in video game mail. For now we'll just sort it ourselves. If it turns out to be a problem we'll figure something else out. -

I realized this just a few hours ago and didn't know how to feel. -
Important If True: Show Announcement Teaser

The full first episode isn't as focused as I'd like, but hopefully once the reader mail wheels start turning, we'll be able to hone things a bit more. We're definitely feeling it out as we go. -

"Marvel Netflix shows" collected thread: If this seems like a bad or arbitrary delineation, let me know. (I've only ever seen one episode of any of these shows, I think, so I'm not sure if this makes sense as a collection, but I noticed that people often cross-referenced these shows in discussion so I thought it maybe made sense?)

I think you have this backwards; they're green in the older release, and blue in the latest one. Not that this actually matters at all! I only mention it because, based on how the colors changed (more subtly) in all the rest of the example shots, it made me wonder if there's some way in which his pants were actually always blue, and just got washed out in such a way that they appeared green? The change seems way too extreme for that to be completely true, so maybe it is just an odd arbitrary choice.

It was never gone! It was moved from Idle Banter to Movies & Television when I created this new subforum, but it wasn't inactive or anything. Idle Banter is just a bigger forum so it was more pages back.

Split-out thread discussing problematic (racist, sexist, etc.) elements in older films and how that affects or should affect their status as "classics":

The premise of the show is that a high school student turns up dead by a lake; it's the same premise of Twin Peaks. All the interpersonal drama between the characters takes place against the backdrop of that central event.
