  1. Name this movie

Judging from what little stills I could find it might indeed be Dobermann. Doesn't seem like a particularly good movie. Thanks for helping me out though. I hate it when I don't know the title of something.
  2. Nifty real-time water effect

Oh man, a poll taken from the homepage of the game's Russian developer:
  3. Name this movie

Um sorry, in Dutch "school" can be informally used to refer to high school, college or university as well.
  4. Just saw the episode and I also agree with most of what Duncan said. This episode revealed very little things we didn't yet already know. (In fact the Billy/Dualla thing seemed like a rerun). It was more interesting than "Scattered", and I'm glad they didn't take the easy bail-out option on the president's situation at the end, but it's still not quite good. The teaser for the next episode looks good though. Looks like the whole political situation will take center-stage.
  5. By the way it's EXTREMELY striking how much, at its core, this series is similar to the later stages of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (which Ron Moore was a writer/producer for). It's essentially the same show, except with all of the Star Trek ballast thrown off.
  6. Looks like you got your wish...

For the record, Jack Thompson is quite probably insane. If you weren't quite aware of his personality yet, check out these links taken from VG Ombudsman: http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/q-a/jack-thompson-declines-to-speak-out-on-gaming-violence-025471.php http://keepyourkillingclean.blogspot.com/2005/02/jack-thompson-is-douche-bag.html This definitely falls in line with what I've read about him previously. I really, really think this guy should not be given any more attention. I hope that sites like GameSpot will choose to no longer run stories based entirely on another one of his 'controversies'.
  7. Slashdot is apparently a nazi....

Looks like they took a page from the Jack Thompson book.
  8. Longhorn sounding funnier every day

I don't mind this name so much. A little cheesy, sure, but I think it's far worse to have two random letters that may or may not stand for "experience".
  9. Seen any good movies lately?

Sin City - Yeah, yeah. I finally saw it. Holy crap. It's so fucking good. I lowered my expectations because someone told me that "it tries so hard to be cool it becomes unwatchable". This person is now determined to not be a reliable source and will not be listened to again. Sin City is probably the first bluescreen movie that I've seen that I actually thought was really good. Dogville - Why do people like this movie so much? I stopped watching it twice. I liked the mise-en-scene, but the script... ARGH. I could barely sit through it. This film did not work for me. Hero - I like it. I liked the colors. Though I prefer House of the Flying Daggers. I really liked the love story that was at the core of that film. I'm not quite sure what Hero was really about, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. The Big Sleep - A bit of a dissapointment for me after reading the book. I guess I got a different idea of Phil Marlowe from the novel. More of this controlled, observant detective who will slowly pace around the room, light a cigarette, and then have some kind of clever retort. In the film it's like the dialog is set to double speed, and all of its cleverness is raped by unreasonably fast delivery. It might be the way movies were made back then, but then again I never actively noticed anything like that in a film like Casablanca, which is from exactly the same period. A big "meh" for The Big Sleep, although a lot of people apparently consider it a classic. Tonight I'm going to watch Batman Begins, and sometime soon I'm gonna watch Le Conseguenze dell'amore. Heard good things about both.
  10. woohoo!

No she's the office manager and also does customer support for the DF shop. Sorry.
  11. woohoo!

Kelli said there'll be further info on the 2HB doll shortly.
  12. I'm not a fan of "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down". It was servicable, but not as good as the other episodes. It's the one in which everyone is suspected of being a Cylon, particularly Tigh's long-lost wife. There's nothing really wrong with anything the episode tried to do, but it all failed when mixed together. Also it tried to play off the Cylon paranoia as comedy, which I don't think really worked. The episode was a bit too confused and unsteady. (By the way, of season one I haven't seen "Colonial Day".) Duncan, I see what you mean about episode 2x1. I liked Tigh's plot but I agree there was already enough crisis around to test his leadership. I guess it had more of an episodic Star Trek-esque plot structure than what we've come used to of BSG.
  13. The stuff about Kobol comes from the original as far as I could gather from episode guides. Another thing that bugs me are the ridiculous differences between the old metal Cylons and the near-human ones. Stuff like that. You're right though, this really seems like a total reimagination, with only some of the names and basic plot points left the same. I agree with you that the whole prophesy theme went a bit over the top in the season 1 finale. Fortunately the series has enough great other strengths that I'm willing to put up with its flaws. I mean, it takes other series years before they get as good as BSG already is. But yeah, they should go easy on that whole prophesy plot line. Regarding the season 2 premiere, I actually made the decision to not watch the season 1 finale when it was first aired (because I didn't want to be dissapointed in case the show got cancelled) so I saw them right after each other. I guess that prevented me from having huge expectations of how the cliffhanger would revolve.
  14. The "tiny object in space WHooaaaa zoom-in NOW IT'S BIG!!!" trick gets really old after 14 episodes. I hope they'll keep the basic style of the space sequences but cut down on the zooms.
  15. Smilies that I hate

These smileys just don't live up to our usual high smiley standards. No one likes them! Can I kill them? Please? :deadman: :nerd: P.S. I put all the heads together in their own category!
  16. Longhorn sounding funnier every day

Yufster: Longhorn is just a codename, just as Windows 95 was called Chicago for a long time, and erm I don't remember the other codenames. The new recycle bin looks... much like one of those plastic cups that hang besides a watercooler.
  17. Asshole son gets his father fired

Well the bad spelling is a little over the top, but it's not what makes me think it's fake. It's that there's so many bullet points crammed in the post, most of which are things a 16 year old kid would never care about.
  18. Asshole son gets his father fired

The GameSpot post has since been deleted but quotes are available here: http://www.xboxcore.com/news/707.html
  19. Asshole son gets his father fired

After reading what the kid had posted, it really seems that this is a case of guerilla marketing.
  20. Tell Us About Yourself

Welcome to Idle Thumbs! What in Zeus' beard is Horrorcore? Hardcore with lots of horror samples? I'm dying to know.
  21. Full time gamesite writing gig

Hee, I forgot all about Frans. Not such a rare thing then. By the way, what is the history between Blue's and Shack? I used to read Blue's in the old days from about late 1996, but I never really followed Shack until recently. I guess they were the two big Quake sites out there. You worked for both?
  22. Smilies that I hate

They're gone. They're still on the server for backwards compatibility though.
  23. woohoo!

If it is what I think it is, it will be bought.
  24. Kikizo has a really good interview with Ed Fries that was shot in front of E3. Why should you watch it? Because you love Ed Fries! Even if you've never heard of him, deep down you love him, cause he's the guy that gave Tim the deal to make Psychonauts. Also Ed Fries co-developed the Xbox and led the Microsoft Games division until about half a year ago, which is actually what they talk about instead of Psychonauts. Since he no longer works at MS he was able to talk a little more openly, and the interviewers ask some great personal questions, so it's a pretty entertaining interview overall. See it. (And as a funny bonus at the end, some insane lady with signs tries to hijack the shot.)
