The 1UP Show is a really mixed bag. But I really, really like their attitude and I watch it every week. 1UP show at its best beats pretty much any American games show out there (which includes some of the interviews and event reports they've done), 1UP show at its worst is ... erm ... well ... . But that's okay, you can't hit perfect homeruns every time on a low-budget sideproject show like this.

Woot. Wallace & Grommit style bunnies/robots meet Rayman. There's also another trailer going around, can't find it right now. But it wasn't as good cause this one has child actors and Pulp Fiction music!!!! (????). And grandpa.

No it's the opposite. It's a book filled with only anecdotes and examples. Easy read.

Stories in games. A necessity, possibility or just an annoyance?
Marek replied to Almos's topic in Video Gaming
Heh yeah I was surprised to see that in his slide. -
What the hell I think they actually read the Idle Thumbs forums. http://www.gamelifeshow.com/ "thanks Marek" ?? Glad to be associated with Game|Life, I guess.

Yeah. His blog actually motivated me to buy a bunch of marketing books, including "Positioning" where he gets most of his stuff from.

If someone finds notes or a transcript of Ernest Adams' most recent GDC talk please post it, as it presented a new way of thinking about story and games that was awesome. I can't really do it justice, but essentially he began thinking about interactive storytelling as a game of roleplaying or improvised theater, where both the designer and player have a responsibility to the story. The credibility of the story is essentially the "magic circle". Step out of the circle (i.e. draw too much from the story's "credibility budget") and the game breaks, and in fact it should refuse to continue. The player is expected to stick to his role, and the designer is expected to facilitate stories within the scope of that role. Again it's really hard to do the lecture justice, because he stated a sort of elusive obvious. I hope there will be a transcript of it. Edit: found a decent writeup http://onlyagame.typepad.com/only_a_game/2006/03/gdc_a_new_visio.html -
If what I have been told about RSI is true than the Wii shouldn't be an issue. It's the tiny mouse movement and keystrokes that can gob up your wrist if your arm isn't properly positioned. Moving your arm freely, and constantly making different types of movements, should in fact be better for your arm. Fine I take personal responsibility!!!

Scott Miller made a couple of good points about marketing and branding when he started his blog but since then his posts have been very poorly thought out and off the cuff to be honest. I respect him and Broussard for being so active and outspoken in the gaming community, but I'd respect them more if they had better arguments to back up their opinions (read: if they were less full of shit most of the time). As for the "my arm will get tired" whining, you should refer to the second section of this article. In short: a) not all games will need wild gestures when it does, it's still as easy as waving a pen around in the air ... and if that's something you can't handle, maybe you should just cocoon yourself and eat from a feeding tube because there's no hope for you left. WTF? As long as you are able to point in the direction of the screen you'll be fine. Which should be the case anyway cause you need to be able to look at the screen to play games.Yah, the Wii controller is crap let's face it guyz. ...

I'd like to think of it as playing the world's smallest violin.

I don't like him much as a comedian. But in serious roles ... I love him. Insomnia and One Hour Photo ftw. Wait, were we talking about games?
-
Not really. Robin Williams is a pretty hardcore gamer. He's always at E3... a few years ago I almost bumped into him. His demo is awesome.

A friend of mine (who isn't really a follower of Thumb) told me he'd googled for Duke Nukem Forever and one of the top hits was this page. Heh.
-
Was he briefed at all in advance? It seemed like it.

N0000ooooooo0o0o0o0o0o0oo. Guys like them are one of the reasons E3 sucks. TAKE THEIR PRESS PASSES AND THROW THEM OUT.

Ragnar is always talking about A Big Next Thing. This year, though, they're only showing Conan.

Harmonix have Wii project(s) in development, none shown yet though.
