I did that and then my apartment smelled of burnt plastic. Also it didn't help my console boot up again.

No, Woedend! finally mellowed out, which meant it was time to leave. I guess I'll do a little blog update about my new gig soon. Talking about it now feels a bit premature as I haven't even had my first day yet. I'm still curled up in fetal position sulking over my dead 360. Sure, I can still play GTA4 later on, but I won't have as much time for it as I would have now, and I'm missing out on all those cool spoiler-filled forum threads. Maybe I could buy a 360 and then sell it again. Except that seems like a lot of trouble.

I wouldn't touch a second hand xbox 360 with a ten foot pole. The towel thing is supposed to kick your 360 back into gear for like a few days. It didn't work for me though. It might be a load of horseshit.
-
Erm yeah, I won't be able to get a replacement soon as I'm moving to the UK in 2 weeks. So unless this towel thing works, I'm going to be fucked for some time.
-
Put in the GTA4 disc .... got red ring of death. This is bullshit. I'm trying the towel trick now

Just got the game. The timing is excellent for me. Today is my last day at my current job and I don't start my next one for another 2 weeks. Time for some oldschool unhealthy 24/7 gaming. Will report back soon.

Bullshit. A car would be far too slow for Sonic.
-
Yeah, that's been bugging me too. Spoilers for season 4 ahead. Spoiler-tags no longer mandatory beyond this point. I'll modify the first post too.

MDK is amazing and underrated. Would love to see just a competently made sequel on today's consoles. Or heck, just MDK1 on XBLA would already rule hard. My expectations are extremely low, however.

Hey, I love Gaius! But yes, the total absense of his stupid cult made me happy. Wasn't so pleased with some of the technical execution of this episode. I didn't like the radial blurring effect used when Cally entered the bar for instance. They were clearly trying to make you feel what the characters feel in many of the scenes (the chaotic Quorum meeting also comes to mind) but in some cases I think they were using visual tools they normally don't use. The Demetrius is definitely overpopulated... 4 senior characters, plus 3 or 4 minor pilot characters. Maybe they were all on crap inspection and were caught by surprise when the ship took off. I guess we just have to accept that the future stories require all these characters plus the Demetrius and its 4 vipers and raptor. Cylon civil war continues to rule totally.

I don't know how much that article makes sense to people who haven't been to GDC but I think it's an amazing article. There is a lot of truth in it.

Comic Sans? In Idle Forums? PERMABANNED!

Erm. I guess I sort of assumed Kara was the 5th because of this: Maybe I'm insane. BTW being reminded of Hera and other stuff like the farms in this thread really makes me wish for some of the different elements in the Cylon mythology/plans to be tied together, because it's still really messy.

Yeah this seems like a good theory. It's weird that this cult has somehow claimed their own private space in the battlestar and just sprang up out of nowhere and also consists mostly of young ladies who want some baltar penis, but they're probably taking massive shortcuts with this, and maybe that's fine... they seemed to be mostly gone in ep 2 anyway. "No more mister nice Gaius!" "You missed! BUTTERFINGERS!" Etc. Based on those lines from past episodes I'd say a lot of the cult humor was intentional.

Just got around to seeing Episode 2. Whoa. This is more like it. Awesome. Anyway yeah I am super happy with this episode.

Sounds like those reasons might make up for half of the difference at max. The other half is probably just a business move. The game is a proven seller in the US even though its priced higher than most games... might as well price it a little higher before price drop a while later? It has to be something like that. I'm glad I'm personally not affected by this price change as I will soon have regular access to an imported US version (woo).

I thought the teaser was extremely good (as is usually the case with BSG). I absolutely loved Tigh's nightmare vision. It was unexpected and terrifying and for a split second I thought it was real. The moment between Anders and the cylon raider was great. But then it kind of went into "meh" territory for me personally. I didn't think Starbuck's return was played out very believably. Here's someone who's gone for 2 months, who they all griefed over, and... I dunno, the reactions didn't seem right. I also didn't particularly like Gaius' cult. It seems a little hoakey and over-the-top in the same way that the black market was back in season 2. The episode pretty much played out all the expected plot points. It did everything it had to do after the situation the finale had set up. So yeah, I liked the episode but didn't love it. Hope next week will be better!

I deleted all references to this in the templates but there´s one I couldn´t delete for some reason. I asked Doug our server admin to look at this a few days ago, dunno what´s happening with that now.

Huh? There used to be a post with someone saying why there's more ads. But it's gone now, which makes my post seem super weird.
-
It's not an ad. The site got hacked apparently. I'm sure it was a super exciting hack.

A thread called "Is it wrong..." by Ginger? The answer is almost certainly yes. Maybe I'll go read the actual post now.

I don't want to seem to be suggesting that execs need to know more about games because then they'll be greenlighting just the artsy or innovative stuff that people like of us on a forum like this will appreciate, or anything like that. This is not a "creativity versus business" argument as far as I'm concerned. Many execs aren't truly in touch with gaming, which is the root of many problems... problems that are actually hurting sales potential, even of games that we here would never play. There's a lot of dumb money being thrown around due to a lack of understanding what makes certain games successful with certain audiences beyond just the standard matrix of genre/platform/IP that informs most greenlighting decisions. I think the industry is still a long way from proper portfolio management and concept incubation and for a large part it's due to a lack of vision at the higher levels. As time goes on, it will slowly get better... for instance, I think we're now beginning to see increasingly influential creative directors who really know their stuff. But it'll take a while to go all the way to the top. It's fascinating to me how Shigeru Miyamoto is actually not a game designer. Not on paper, anyway. His business card says something like Senior Director of Marketing. I believe this is largely what's behind Nintendo's enormous fortunes as of late. Nintendo is a company that has people at the top with a very good understanding of the medium, who are in a position to recognize new opportunities like Brain Training, the Wii, Nintendogs, etc. as well as manage their portfolio of core products/franchises effectively. Nintendo is perhaps an extreme example, as Miyamoto is kind of the John Lasseter of the games industry, but there's obviously more subtle examples of this too. I have gotten absolutely sick of comparisons to movies, but anyway, I'm sure guys like the Weinsteins are not just shrewd businessmen but also have at least a basic intuitive feel for the medium and know what will make a successful movie beyond its genre or premise or the amount of money invested in it. They'll read scripts or have people read scripts for them, they'll know directors and other key talent or have the right people in charge of getting them involved, and will meet with them. I'm sure there's a lot to bitch and moan about Hollywood but honestly I think they're ahead in understanding how this works. Now, what Nachimir said is sadly also very true. I don't think programmers or game designers generally make for good execs as evidenced by what happened in the UK and elsewhere... But I do think execs need to have at least some degree of vision informed by actual personal appreciation of the medium. Erm, yeah. I hope that made sense.

I haven't seen Hogfather. For the record I have only read two Discworld novels (one of which was Colour of Magic, which I read like 10 years ago) and played the Discworld games so I didn't really have any expectations or anything. I just saw the movie and didn't like it at all, and I only saw it to the end because I had fun commenting on the movie with Spaff who I was watching it with.

Yes, #1 problem in the games industry right there...
