Good idea in theory but I don't think that's how most people want to have a podcast delivered to them? Most people just want a feed with the mp3, not a .torrent with an mp3 that then needs to be manually transfered to whatever software people use to play podcasts or load them onto an mp3 player...

There's so many domains pointing to Idle Thumbs that it's created an inverse feedback loop sucking up all web bandwidths in its wake. Erm actually, yes, it's probably the fact that all of Thumb/Shack/NeoGAF/Gaming blogosphere are hammering the server with mp3 download requests. We'll look at some better ways to handle this demand.

I personally haven't faced any real difficulties yet but that may be because the jobs I'm after are senior enough not to have been affected so far. It's obviously a tough climate though and it's something that's factoring more heavily in my job search than before. One company that I'm considering joining is in kind of in a start-up situation and I'm wondering if they are able to provide decent enough job security. If I want to have really good job security I can get it by moving to a developer that's really loaded with cash, but they're based in a pretty lame city and I'd be at least 4 hours away from all my friends in Brighton and London.

I sometimes also feel like the injokes/laughter/tangents might get too obscure, but on the other hand I think the guys have done a pretty good job so far walking that tightrope. The first time that there were 4 hosts (with Steve) they might have wobbled a lot, and it almost went too far into randomness, but every podcast since then has had in my opinion a nice balance between laughter and joking around and actual content. -
You know, sometimes I'm in a chat and I'm looking for a particular link or piece of information, and I type it into Google, and then I'm like "whoaa! Idle Thumbs!". It's always funny to me when that happens. FYI Idle Thumbs is your #1 source for "j allard transformation". And #3 for "nascar heat tonka town".

This thread makes me think of the UK press. When I walk around Brighton a lot of kiosks have a poster of the daily headline of The Argus, the local newspaper, and it amuses me how they're always three or four words in huge bold font that sound super extreme. It could be something like... WOMAN IN RECYCLING TRAGEDY What?! They'd come up with some amazingly bizarre headlines sometimes, that just made no sense out of context. And often the actual stories associated with them would be super lame. I just searched for a bit and found there's actually a flickr group for it. Anyway, the BBC pretty much rules, as far as I can tell. I don't have a TV connection anymore but I watched election night on TV while on holidays, and we kept flicking the channels between Sky News, CNN and BBC. The attitude of the BBC was really restrained and professional. Sometimes they'd say something like "ABC News has called this state for Obama. I should say that the BBC has not called this state yet. We repeat, BBC has not called this yet. We will let you know when enough votes are in." Which to me kind of said 'don't go to those dumbass channels, we're not jumping to any conclusions here'. Also, the next morning I watched BBC News which had a broadcast from New York, and the old British journalist man got stuck with a nasty cough. He excused himself but when he asked his question again he had to cough again. So he took a sip of water and was like "Hmmyes, yes that's much better, really clears the throat" with a typical old man British accent and then he looked slyly at the camera and under his breath said "harumph it's a gin & tonic". Which was win. And completely besides any kind of point. I don't know why I wrote about all that.

For those who are interested, here's the podcast thread on GAF that's been around since the first episode, where you can read such excellent feedback as: So yeah, pancake humper, rest assured your domain is totally making an impact! -

Haha brilliant. What would make it even better is some vaguely suggestive pixel art (no more than 10 pixels needed), stretched out to full screen. -

Hahah oh man the friend phone network. I was stuck in Monkey Island 1 for probably a month until a friend called and he was like "DUDE YOU HAVE TO USE THE MAGNET". And then I was like "whoaaaaa oh man!!! OK if you'll excuse me, I need make some calls" That was so win -

Just wanna say I'm about 10 minutes in right now and I'm having physical pain from laughter. Or: ? Ow... -
Ahhh yes that might be it. Speaking of 2 many DJ's, I've been looking for the one you played a lot in Hungary and I can't find it anywhere. The one with the chopped up Kylie Minologue song. When I'm in Holland this month I really have to, um, "borrow" it from you.
-
How/why do I know that song?!?!? :erm:

Atari just had a 2-day press event in London where they made all their new announcements. So it seems that if they wanted to re-announce Brutal Legend they'd have done it there. But anything is possible.

Jake: Yeah I kinda stopped to think whether to use the term at all when I blogged about it. It seems like a term used for a pretty specific thing. Motion graphics is the term to use if you want people to remotely know what you're talking about.

Just saw the Theroux documentary. Fascinating and totally depressing. Also 100% The Wire.

That's an epicly crispy-looking skybox at the end, oh man.

Idle Thumbs 7: Stop Doing Interviews

Haha holy shit. Welcome, KaboomzZz. You just made a spectacular entrance into the forums. -
After we got him on board he made some mockups for the interface of our game, and suddenly it all started coming alive for me. I was super excited. The game wasn't just a bunch of stats and names on a screen anymore (as in our prototype) but something very real and awesome-looking. Sadly he's moving to Australia now. I saw the Dead Space interface yesterday and thought it was very interesting. A little distracting though maybe? I mean the intention was probably to integrate the interface into the environment more, but the opposite kind of happens where it's like INTERFACCCEEE IN YOUR FACCEEEE (imagine that said in Strongbad voice). I still like it a lot though.

That "kinetic blah blah" stuff was just my starting point for looking around on YouTube when I saw it on that other blog. Feel free to take the thread in any direction you like. Awesome links! Art of the Title 1000% bookmarked.
