  1. QUILTBAG Thread of Flagrant Homoeroticism

This is also just a really good argument for the need for more queer narratives in fiction, so that every single one doesn't bear the burden of being a monolithic representation of an incredibly diverse range of experiences.
  2. Jurassic World: Wasting away in Margaritaville

I went back to Jurassic Park a couple days ago and while there are definitely parts of that movie that don't play today, there's nothing that made me cringe to the degree that literally any given line from these trailers did. Also, frankly? No Mr DNA, no ticket. Sorry, man, that's a dealbreaker
  3. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

This isn't strictly related to the movie, but did y'all read this postmortem on Star Wars Galaxies from Raph Koster? Holy shit, it's tragic.
  4. Post your face!

sup shit that's a big picture sorry
  5. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

    Shit. He's right.
  6. My sincere hope for Harmonix's game is that they can leave behind the annualized peripheral arms race and focus on Rock Band as a platform that can be refined and executed without the need to buy 60 dollar games or 90 dollar keyboards every 13 months. I loved Rock Band, but I just don't have the kind of life where I can be a reliable consumer in that way - but I want to support the game, you know? I like Harmonix and I like their games and I want them to keep making more weird, dumb music stuff. I guess the fact that Activision is apparently getting back into this makes that less likely, huh? I'm not sure competition between the two platforms actually made the games better last time out so much as it just forced people to pick either one game or the other.
  7. QUILTBAG Thread of Flagrant Homoeroticism

    Man, that writing is... p r e t t y b a d could they not have, like... asked someone? literally anyone?
  8. I do wish they had added a respec option, but that's mostly selfish, because I get hell of anxiety about allocating stats correctly in pretty much every Souls game.
  9. I think there may be some extreme people among those that gamergate has targeted - it should come as no surprise that queer circles tend to be politically radical in the American conception of what radicalism means, after all - but I guess my issue lies with the framing of this whole thing as some sort of debate, with people on both sides offering positions that deserve to be taken seriously. It's not a conversation in the same way that someone mugging you in an alley isn't a conversation. Anyway, this is totally the wrong thread for this, haha. How about Mario Party? That's good stuff, right?
  10. I disagree with the assertion that gamergate is about "extremes vs extremes." What's the extreme notion that these people are reacting to? "Women and queer people should have more representation in games than they do now" isn't an extreme position, it's, like, the minimum standard of human decency.
  11. Yeah. I don't know. I'm conflicted - I think Jeff in particular has a lot of clout among the kind of fuckboys who call into his... drive time radio show (???) and insist that he's on the side of gamergate, and it would be personally satisfying to hear him deflate that entire contingent beyond all shadow of a doubt, but I think my feelings about whether or not Giant Bomb has "done enough" are based more in my personal feelings about the duders than anything else. Namely, I like them, I look up to them personally and professionally, and I want them to agree with my side of this. I think that their letter was comically late, but it did go up, and it said the right things. Why isn't that enough for me? I wonder sometimes if Jeff really is right when he says that focusing so much on gamergate, The Movement really is giving them more power than they deserve. Obviously they aren't going away, and we need to support their victims in whatever way we can. I don't think we should stick our heads in the sand or ignore things. But my snarking on twitter about gamergate doesn't do half as much to turn back the tide as my making things, as criticizing and making games when and where I can, as trying to be a positive force for change instead of wringing my hands about whether or not I'm gonna be ~truegendered~ if I do anything at all. Fuck that, man. Fuck being scared and fuck letting them hold me hostage and fuck even giving them, like, an inch of room to try and undo the inevitability of change and progress in this industry.
  12. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

I'm as surprised as you are that I still have the ability to feel reverent (or, indeed, feel anything) about any of this dumb stuff.
  13. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Haha, no, I meant the novel. Peep that episode synopsis, it's like... everything wrong with the Star Wars EU. (Though I guess on reflection I'm completely unsurprised that there's more than one "darksaber" in that big mess.)
  14. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

I think, if you look deep into your heart, way deep down into your most secret soul, we can all agree that Darksaber didn't really need to be saved.
  15. I beat the game!!!!! I never beat games. Feels good.
  16. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

'Cautious optimism' is the order of the day.
  17. Yeah. I wonder what would have happened had they given her character a season or two more to really develop - it doesn't help that season 2 of TNG doesn't have the strongest writing in a lot of places - but, you know, hindsight. At the end of the day, Pulaski clashes with TNG's way more aspirational tone, and I don't blame them for swapping her out.
  18. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yeah, a Congresswoman is getting campaign funds from a weapons manufacturer and Zoe Quinn is the problematic thing here.
  19. I ended up liking Pulaski way more than most people. It was interesting to have a more cynical voice among the generally optimistic crew - kind of a Bones figure. She provided contrast. I totally get why she wasn't popular, though, and I definitely agree that her beef with Data was, um... heavy-handed.
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Man as if I wasn't already worried enough about making and releasing anything, ever.
  21. Yeah, they just finished that a few months ago - it's a remastered Bluray release from the original flim negatives. I haven't seen them, but anecdotally, I've heard they're great. Google is inconclusive, but I thiiiiiiink the remastered released can be streamed off Amazon Prime.
