  1. The line between "sexy" and "sexualized" hasn't at all been crossed, in my opinion. And I honestly don't see how "Valley of Gods" could cross that line seeing that it's about two independent women chatting about the nitty-gritty of film making in the 1920s instead of all those hunks they drool over. There's no male gaze situation going on in the trailer. The lady isn't overly exposed, the clothes look fairly practical and situation adequate. Etc. The broad hips are just a cartoon shorthand and not inherently misogynist. The trailer: Great scenes, good impression of what we're looking at in less than two years' time. I always prefer third person to first person particulary in games in which the main character actually is a character, but I'll make an exception for the new Campo Santo game. Oooof couuuurse. And in the Unreal Engine, all this can run so much better than in Unity (nothing against Unity though).
  2. Big thumbs up for that last episode.
  3. Blade Runner 2049

Maybe I can overlook that because in fact the original didn't click as much for me.
  4. Blade Runner 2049

I think it's pretty much implied.
  5. Blade Runner 2049

Yeah. Diversity casting, female roles, there's very valid criticism to be heard in these respects. There's no defense to be offered. If that's what ruins the movie for you, it is in fact ruined.
  6. Blade Runner 2049

Confession: Although I'm a total 80s movie nut, I was comparatively meh on Blade Runner. Also, being that total 80s movie nut, I often question the need for any movie to have a run time of more than 99 minutes. So I hesitated to accompany a friend to the theatre yesterday. Long story short, I loved it. Absolutely, loved it. Sets, framing, camera, storytelling/structure, revelations, ending. When was the last time I liked the ending of a movie?! Must have been years. Damn shame it tanks so hard.
  7. Tilly! WHY. She's the kind of character I usually like, but she's so overdone. What they're doing with and to Cadet Tilly is more fit for an 80s teenie summer camp movie. I'd much appreciate if they dialed her down 50% at least. Somehow I can't imagine Fuller wrote her like this. :| Concerning Burnham, it's pretty clear what they're attempting, and "two hearts beating in her chest" is pretty difficult to bring across. Martin-Green is excellent in both roles, of course, and I could do with even more "Michael Burnham staring blankly at everyone". Most importantly, I think they're indeed going into the direction to dissolve the boundaries between logic and emotion to a degree, and that should get rid of that logic = coldness equation as well. Already we've heard that the Vulcans' logical reaction and only answer to the Klingon culture was immediate, reflexive violence. And I believe this purposefully mirrors our present ideological struggle: Should we, as enlightened peaceful human beings, with our superior morals and logic, react to the re-emerging threat of nazism with violence or do we still believe that "going high" will do anything at all to root the ideology out? Just like Michael Burnham, through logic as well as emotion, it's normal for us to come to entirely incompatible conclusions at the very same time, and to feel shame and guilt for either. Concerning Burnham's investigation on the Discovery, it may be as they say: Curiosity killed the Vulcan.
  8. I believe the "serialized narrative" marketing was a little overstated. It seems like there will be more of an episodic structure than I previously expected. It looks like there will be "that one episode" in which an old TOS villain returns, and there will be "that one episode" directed by Will Riker Jonathan Frakes in which they're drawing on a fan favorite [Spoiler Spoiler] plot. What's strongly overarching still is the Klingon War and Burnham's character development. I sure do hope there's still a lot of discovery on the Discovery. The analogy is super strong. The Klingons' war is ours. It's born out of the unfounded fear of cultural extinction ("Remain Klingon", oh boy) and it feeds on a perceived threat to their culture (the Federation) that absolutely isn't one.
  9. E3 2017

Could you elaborate on that? Personally, I feel like the game they've announced is pretty definitely going to be released, it's just that it's Beyond Good & Evil in name only...
  10. E3 2017

Absolutely. I felt a bit icky when Quinn tweeted a never forgive/never forget yesterday, but there's plenty reason to assume the developer isn't at all a changed man. So, no, as cool as it looks and as much as I love the genre. It's only the second game I ever 'boycotted' because of the developer's political leanings, but yeah, I'll give it a pass. That's my question. The answer may be: Lost in Ubisoft's greed. I didn't mind the swearing at all – the original was pretty dark in places, despite the colorful environments; I never thought of it as a game for kids, and I still believe that's the fundamental misunderstanding that ruined sales when the game came out in 2003. So swearing, hey, it wouldn't fit Jade but why wouldn't it fit other characters. And that trailer... it's beautiful. Wonderful. Really, really cool. It's the info they published around that wonderful trailer that makes me puke. I was into the BG&E2 idea for the characters Jade and Pey'J, and because of the gameplay mechanics Zelda plus wildlife+investigative photography. Instead we're getting "GTA in space". Online functionality whether we want it or not. They're pulling an Elite Dangerous on BG&E fans. That's just ... opportunist, sick Ubisoft© crap. And Ancel has been shown to toe the company line for ages ever since they tried to blackmail Sony and Microsoft into a new console generation by siccing the BG&E fans on them.
  11. E3 2017

These responses are tiring. There it is again, the "gamergate was misunderstood and misrepresented" nonsense. As if they've never even heard of its founding event and naming circumstances. Tim Soret has been digging himself pretty deeply into the gg trenches and their strategies. So, whatever changed in the guy's life didn't change until August 2015, less than two years ago. Also, Markus Persson has been redpilling for a while now. Time for him to finally delete his twitter account.
  12. Meow.

Start all three purring cat videos at the same time for stress relief.
  13. Painting tabletop miniatures

So it happened, I ordered the Heroquest 25th anniversary edition that's only legal in Spain. In case it ever arrives, I will have to get back into miniature painting pretty quickly. Hey, it's only been... what... oh, yeah. Half my life. 20 years. Uh-oh.
  14. Feminism

There are other communities in which it works. I think that in general, a forum of a game developer reflects the ideals that are close to the developer. In the same vein, if a game developer has vocally argued against the gamergate fiasco, and has taken flak for it, you can probably discuss feminism with like minded people in their forum. The Double Fine and Red Thread Games forums come to mind... which aren't frequented by me without reason...
  15. Fake Games

What Beasteh, jennegatron and Twig said.
  16. Game of the Year, easily. Also, people in here talking about games I actually dig and that are not only on Steam? Brilliant.
  17. "Cars sucks." - A Pixar Thread

I just watched Cars 2. For the first time. I'm in shock.
  18. Beyond Good and Evil 2

Same here. I loathe Ubisoft's megalomaniac advertising nonsense, but I especially loathe when Ancel parrots it. I really don't want or need just another 150 hour open world Ubisoft Game. I want Beyond Good & Evil 2 instead, an actually true spiritual successor, one that is about a smaller, crowded place without the sandbox feel but with real iconic environments and characters. :|
  19. Rumor has it that 54-year old Michelle Yeoh may play Discovery's main character "Number One". I would like that.
  20. Idle Thumbs 287: The Fun Cast

Thanks, now I feel older than the lot of you (but I do have the back pain as well). Owlboy "a Metroidvania where you fly most of the time"? Have none of you ever heard of Gargoyle's Quest? That's what this game reminded me of most. So the concept isn't new. The whole being-annoyed-by-the-cutscenes business felt strange to me as well. The dialog is super-lightweight really, two or three lines of text is usually all there is... and the protagonist is mute to boot. And, yup, I've been in a whole, whole lot of bullet hell situations up to now, and may indeed give up on the game because it's too difficult for me. Which would be a disaster, because I really love Owlboy! (Yup, it's only on PC, but it's not only on Steam thankfully)
  21. Owlboy!

No responses? Really? I knew it was too good to be true that someone wanted to talk about a not Steam exclusive, non-console game. Well, I'm pretty far in the game, and after a phase of absolute delight that lasted the first six hours or so, the game now seems to be a series of annoying and next to impossible boss fights, which is really not what I've bought it for. Nonetheless, the graphics are fantastic, I love the characters, the music is infinitely well done and there's not just a lot of it, there are even some interactive music elements too. The story is more or less Mass Effect put in a mixer, which is cute, but really not what the game is about that much.
  22. Castpoint Podway? All right, all right, I'll see myself out.
  23. Steamworld Heist

Sighhhh. No sign of a GOG release yet. I even shot the devs an email... never heard from them again. Even though Steamworld Dig is on GOG... and I've completed the darn thing four times...
  24. Yeah... it all feels too much like prequelitis. And the dangers of prequelitis are canon infringement and surprise impoverishment. If Fuller gives us a Star Trek series that features enlightened people on our 21st century level, how do they explain TNG episodes like "The Host" or "The Outcast" that supposedly play out 100 years later?
