  1. Episode 290: Odds and Ends

My understanding was that detection in space is much simpler due to heat emission, and going stealth would involve hurling (no self propulsion) an object after freezing it so that it doesn't have to emit heat while getting to its destination. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StealthInSpace Also not just fighters, I think space warships in general is romantic. Like what would be the point of one? You could just have loads of missiles orbiting around points of interest. And I think kinetic weapons are actually right at home in space so long as most important targets remain largely stationary (being near future, I think this is likely to remain true). When you say optical weapons, I assume you mean lasers? Could laser weapons effectively intercept kinetic weapons? I mean it would take a lot of time and energy to completely evaporate a large mass. Combine the two and it just turns into... very awful un-game like calculation when I tried to gamify it. Hence I'm going with far more arcade route where I can just add whatever, including interesting terrain.
  2. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

    Thanks, much appreciate it <3
  3. Endless Legend

You can. You have to hold ctrl I think, or click then drag.
  4. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

This is why I would appreciate quotes in full context because for all I know he was either replying to something along the line of what you are saying here (we all have larger cultural responsibility) or something more direct (equating ignoring with actual act) and extreme. And that would change the meaning quite a bit. And it's still different from "misogyny is not a problem".
  5. Endless Legend

    That could be cool!
  6. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I'm having trouble equating that as "misogyny is not a problem in gaming" Certainly non majority can suffer from real problems or cause them. As for other two stuff, although that isn't my own interpretation, I can see how one could see those as such.
  7. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Fair points, I think I can understand why.
  8. Recently completed video games

Wargame: Red Dragon. Finished all 4 campaigns. What a blast.
  9. Military And Consumer Gaming

I think there is a fine distinction between bug out bags and zombie killing arsenal. But maybe that's because I really like building bug out bags/basic survival kit And no I don't think I'll ever use them. I see it more of a hobby to scratch that 'survivor' itch, right there along with hiking.
  10. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

    1. Yeah I remember that and that was dumb of him to say that for sure. 2. I disagree with that if he said it but when did he say that? 3. Yeah I recall that interview vaguely and that bit bothered me because not good enough then what does he want to follow it up with? 4. Again, dumb if said, but when is there quote in context? 5. I know he said exact opposite of that few times so is there a quote on this that's also in context? 6. Yeah I think the distinction he's trying to make for himself is bit whacky cause while he considers himself to be a pundit I think his behavior is more journalistic than other people who are criticized as journalist (both by others and himself). Apologies for asking for specifics but I've seen lot of out of context quotes being used against people too often recently.

What CollegeBaby said pretty much. I've seen few good arguments about how specific examples she used (like Hitman Absolution example) isn't up to par but even then all of those specifics combined doesn't argue against the main argument IMO. And I think it's fine to critique the specifics when they are misleading, so long as either you get a coherent argument out of it or accept that her point still stands. Without either of those, like CollegeBaby said, the counter critiques often seem to be a stepping stone for character assassination.
  12. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I used to be sympathetic to Gamergate-r a bit early on because first, I failed to see how its origins were tied in to Zoey Quinn harassment and secondly they seem to get lot of blanket hate (if you utter that word, you are instantly the worst kind of scum of the world type of stuff, also the chain articles about how gamers are dead didn't endear me much). I mean I still don't approve of blanket hating, but days go by, weeks go by, months go by and all I see out of GG is the accusation that they are harassing people followed by GG user replying how it wasn't them... I mean I guess 4chan or whatever did this one charity thing? Still seem to pale in comparison to completely directionless shitstorm the hashtag has caused. And lot of the times I was in agreement with the very frontal side of their chain of thought (reviewer using patreon to support the dev of games they are reviewing, for example, seems to be a clear conflict of interest to me) but then those are so often followed by some crazy ass fringe logic (like following with that patreon example, then some would suggest hacking bank acc to see how clean they are...). Like I think simple disclosure of such support is plenty enough so that audience can make up their mind, and asking (and I mean asking, not swatting or some other BS) is sufficient but man too many of those GG users were asking for blood for every little thing. And ultimately, if you really want to talk about possible corruption, you could do so without the hashtag anyway (probably way more effectively too). So those who still use it, idk what other reason they could have for it? But perhaps I'm missing something cause I dislike hashtags outside of scope of comedic reliefs to begin with. BTW I actually like what TB says most of the times (minus specifics to GG hashtags because I think the hashtag is just dumb), I assume I'm of the minority in regard to this specific opinion here?

There are few female characters that made me want to be a girl. Oddly enough, Kill la Kill was one (a show where most hate comes from its overtly done fan-servicing). Watching that show didn't make me want Ryuko, I wanted to be her with all the periods the world would give me. Games are different because I always feel like character I control is my possession rather than my avatar. Also to cheer you up Twig remember poison from Capcom, a character who gained fame through becoming a transgender which was done due to some importing culture issue.
  14. Episode 290: Odds and Ends

Well stated hexgrid, that's a fine example for naval wargame but I wonder if it's limited to age of sails and once we get proper self powered ships, lot of those distinctions just sort of melt away? To clarify my position, I'm working with space (near future sci fi so everything is within the solar system) as theme and it's running into this trouble of 'not enough terrain' as I think modern naval warfare suffers from. Tried prototyping both arcade like rules and more hardcore simulation... arcade one fell into the trap of not enough tactical variety (all about focus firing) and sim version was just straight up weird because I ended up having really strange sense of distance as everything shoots forever (at least within the game room, so distance doesn't really mean squat unlike in every other strategy games) and it took forever to countermand any previous movement... pretty sure I don't have the skills necessary to make a good game out of more simulation-like space combat yet.
  15. Military And Consumer Gaming

Man Spec Ops is so good, glad you brought it up itsamoose. On Call of Duty series, yeah the stories are not pro war but I think the gameplay undermines that IMO because so much of the game is about hyping up you gunning your way through whatever conflict the game throws at you... and that undermining is really awkward at best, and gross at worst. Contrast that to say, Ace Combat series where even the story is about hyping up your combat prowess (outside of Ace Combat 4 I guess? Haven't played 1 2 and 3 though) but combine the aircraft combat (oppose to being an infantry) with lot of the story being bit zany (you always end up fighting some crazy vehicle and do some sort of death-star trench run at the end to save the world) actually makes it feel lot more palatable.
  16. anime

I didn't watch S2 but yes, that reveal happens around 2/3 of the way through.
  17. Military And Consumer Gaming

Oh yeah, no doubt their interest are probably muddled at best.
  18. Military And Consumer Gaming

I actually don't see paying real weapons manufacturers licensing fees as problematic in and of itself because I don't find arms manufacturing ethically concerning by itself. I see all aspects of military, from weapons, strategy to culture, as vital necessity to civilization (both the game and real life). What grosses me about the recent development is the push to make light of what is one of the most serious aspects of our society (for most of us it will probably be indirect) without neither being a satire or trying to hint to the audience of its ridiculousness. To a degree this sort of glorifying war always existed in history (lot of World War I's problem stemmed from this, which was ironically a culture which tried to empower individuals), but I think it's safe to say that the degree of glorification has varied, and I worry that the current trend seems to be going up at least in the USA. I love space theme too but that mostly stemmed out of Gundam so in a very limited sort of way. I think the perspective is definitely American because while I can only compare two cultures, in South Korea due to conscription, lot of 'mythic' qualities about military service is gone and people have easier time seeing it for what it really is.
  19. Military And Consumer Gaming

Most of the times, no. I find action comedy to be funny but the deal is action comedies are often self-aware of their ridiculousness and that self-awareness is the humor (most of the times anyway). I didn't get that sense of self-awareness in the very first CoD live action ad (the one featuring that actor from new Clash of the Titans and Avatar). The second one with youtube personalities was definitely lot less abrasive as the focus seemed to be on the personalities in chain of out-doing the previous one via game mechanic.
  20. I Had A Random Thought...

I totally do this. Except I go completely naked whenever I use the restroom for number 2. So I try not to take number 2 in public if I can.
  21. anime

Anyone here finished Psychopass? This shouldn't be a spoiler... let's just say that in the series there is a big reveal moment and IMO I think that reveal turned out to be completely unnecessary and ended up lowering the overall quality of the show. I wonder what others who watched that show felt about that?
  22. Episode 290: Odds and Ends

I appreciate you guys sharing some of smaller but still cool games through podcast like this Interesting note about naval battles because I concur that it's not the easiest topic to create deep game out of and has been wrestling with this 'problem' for a while on my own...
  23. Planetary Annihilation

Ok so there is a way to lock to north. Thanks. I'll give it another shot.
  24. Planetary Annihilation

Does it lock the camera or do I have to press it to re-orient it?
  25. Episode 289: 2014, King of Years

Amplitude did a pretty good job improving Endless Space through both expansion and patches, so I think odds are good that Endless Legend will notably improve. But I think some of the late game issues will persist because both games have such similar design on how economy scales in game, they must just love their games to be played like that.
