  1. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Not sure if I'm partially what you are looking for, but I'm Korean 1st gen immigrant. But as previously stated, my opinions and view are like, my own so which is a culmination of my life experience (which is not too far from middle class American life) so :/ That and Korea, like few other east asian 'tiger economy' nations, are pretty up there in terms of opportunity and standard of living and like other ethnically homogenous cultures, have way more blatant racism present so I'm just like eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh most of the time.
  2. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Given how often appropriation pops up perhaps it would be really useful that it gets its own thread? There is this difficult balancing to be done about theoratical individualism and theoratical social structure... like we are our own individual self that is formed out of social context in which we live in. Pure individualism is blind to the social influences so with that we end up with the kind of response like "affirmative action is racist" because it is blind to very real social structures where great number of minorities are more likely to be at a disadvantage... on the other hand is the concern you and moose are raising, in that if we go too extreme with pure social structural view, then we also end up with ironical backlash of categorizing people into certain roles purely based on race/gender/class on very broad stroke... So denial of cultural appropriation as whole would be too individualistic, while using race as sole measure would be too vague and broad. So I guess lot of initial irks that I, moose and you are feeling about this topic is because it is often presented as its broadest form, but I think that's just because it's the shortest way to express the idea so I think it's good idea to give people benefit of the doubt that they would consider variety of factors instead of assuming that they would apply it its most basic form. Well at least that's my simple (maybe too simple, just a lay person's talk here afterall from me) view on it. Edit: looks like AppleCider beat me to it. Like, give people benefit of the doubt that when they are concerned about appropriation that they are willing to consider variety of factors. It may be that some people won't and would apply super broad strokes. But why default to the worst possible explanation? Afterall aren't we also just asking to give us benefit of the doubt when we talk about intent or other factors that we are not necessarily some assholes?

I don't know why but that's making me giggle really hard XD
  4. Life

Oh snap a huge explosion in Tianjin in China... tweeter is flooding with news about this.
  5. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Speaking unironically here, Deadpan and Gorm are really good at it, I think. I talked to them about stuff that could press all the hot buttons but those two never really got mad at me.
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

How can you kuastion the importance of the letter q! It's also useful for rare but hilarious situations when someone ask how you typed that mirrored p.

Maybe the word 'radical' or 'extremists' also being misplaced? Like the stuff that megaspel is describing isn't even that extreme in ideology... it sounds like more of a case where people are just acting like an ass. Now maybe it can be argued that it's an ideological problem if the ideology has a history of producing asses, but as much as I despise the 'left-troll', I'm not getting the impression that it's in any ways unique to the left so I think the description of jackasses or other ideology free descriptions would suffice. Sometimes people are metaphorical dicks and it just doesn't have any bearing on their beliefs :/
  8. Well I wasn't having an issue with this, and yeah that's how I understood it and it just sounds dumb that you have to convert the product key when upgrade is free. Like I'm relating this to a hypothetical situation where service packs would be free like they are now, but user would have to get new key and use that in the future... like why is that the case with free Windows 10? I guess limited timeframe of free upgrade is the issue?
  9. So... Windows 7 & 8 keys aren't good for fresh Windows 10? Given that they are handing out the upgrades for free, that sounds bit dumb?
  10. Episode 317: Crusader Kings II: Horse Lords

Indeed. I think it must be a side effect of using same engine for 4+ different games. The map mode swiching kinda works, but yeah it is still sidelining great deal of important information for sure. Oh and Rob got avatar pic for the forum! Oh this is so exciting~

Maybe it also translates really poorly? Execute having dual meaning (one to kill, one to simply carry out) might be English exclusive? Then again, computer language translations are also odd cause so much of it is built on English compared to other aspects of language. But yeah overall political and cultural climate can vary quite a lot and it's kinda integral to language so always interesting to hear translation details like that.

I second what Bjorn said. Just with added caveat that regardless of intentions important topics like this needs to get its story told as accurately as possible anyways.
  13. Episode 317: Crusader Kings II: Horse Lords

Right, but that's because EU4 had nothing you could do to help yourself come to more exact information. It was a layer of misinformation without anything for player to interact with other than throwing their calculations off (which is sometimes very valuable (xcom relies on it to force players to prepare for contingencies) but definitely not the way that EU4 did (nor are PDX games really good enough encouraging players for backup plans cause of its micro-turn-pacing)). I believe that the part about performing more 'mundane' (by strategy genre standard) activities to extract clues, aka 'information-mining', is the key here. Definitely not EU4 though because micro actions in that game are not set to have 'information-mining' as a major function, while more personal game like CK2 can. At least I'm having a very easy time imagining good portion of CK2 session being about going through more minute details of life to build up and maintain your information on other people. To be clear, I think game should never give you wrong info. I think it should be clearly presented as 'unknown' variables. But maybe you are completely right because then this kinda hurts the 'dynasty' planning aspect of the game which is a huge part of CK2. The game I'm thinking of here probably needs to have characters last far longer than they do in CK2.

To be specific, podcast ended with agreement that second stats that would add limited ambiguity to opinion would be cool to see. Like, you should be able to clearly see broad characteristics that could have dual meaning but then have the characters have ability to 'hide' their exact interpretation of those characteristics from each other (primarily the player since AIs don't care much). So on the broadest, ledger available information you get 100% confirmed info that character John A is ambitious. Then based on your character's ability to read people and John A's counter people skill, you can see (or fail to see) exactly what that ambition leads to... like is John A happy to stay as your most powerful Duke? Or will he not stop til he becomes an emperor? Still has major problems in similar ways that you mentioned though of course. But it is lot more fleshed out and feels plausible in some ways. Like imagine such a game where you perform various social activities to pick up cues... host parties, tournaments, etc. CK2 is pretty close to that so it's kinda cool thought~
  15. Until actual gameplay is shown to prove otherwise, I'll assume that territorial imperialism will be the main language of the game kinda like every other strategy games out there. I know how one civilization offering 'guidance' works in that context
  16. Feminism

I say jokes are fine and I enjoy your communication Twig like 99% of the times~ It's just that with strangers might be best to be ready to apologies in case of miscommunication.
  17. anime

oh man, if it's going to be a spotlight for a podcast I want to be in that one so bad, I'll do whatever scheduling it takes to be on that one!
  18. anime

Yeah, only thing you need to know about 0080 (and it's pretty much spoiler free, at least of any important plot detail) is that it's set during a war that's analogous to WW2 where you have Zeon representing Axis power in space, and Earth Federation representing Allies and the war is basically playing close to history. And nuclear weapons are banned by mutual treaty when both side realized early on that being in a nuclear war was really bad. 0080 is 6 episodes long OVA and is one of the best one to short ones to watch standalone cause outside of that broad context, story is very much self contained and rarely relies on some weird in-universe quirks (aside from giant war mechas). There is a english dub on youtube as of yesterday and dub was... ok? but not sure how long it will stay up and I still prefer sub cause it's old dub and they do really awkward job with anime grunting as reflecting the early era of dubs.
  19. No I built mine and bought OEM W7 from Newegg and I just got my invite to install W10 so that wouldn't be it. Also holding off on the invite though cause middle of project and I'm easily scared.
  20. anime

Could anyone here please watch Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket please, I need someone to share these feels with... T_T
  21. The ASTOUNDING thread of science!

Since it's an advert exaggeration (hiding of rails to make the tech look more advanced than it is) that doesn't actually deal with the product in question (rather, the focus is on the maker), I'm like, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
  22. The ASTOUNDING thread of science!

Then is that hoverboard (or the track to be specific) safe for say, people with medical pins or pacers? Or am I a dummy and thinking of magnet in too basic of a sense?
  23. Halo Wars 2

Interesting to hear that CA is being tasked with this game. I figured HALO universe warranted something more akin to Relic's Dawn of War 2 than anything CA have put together.
  24. Yes, and it's interesting divergence of preferences because I was once really into that idea of this lower volume but more detailed tactical game. And that certainly works for me in turn based games like say, FFT or Xcom (actually it is kind of critical for me that turn based games remain relatively 'small' in control scale). But real time equivalent of these tactics focused games just doesn't grab me the way that volume-centric ones do. For me, there is something "primal" about watching ton of tiny things moving that I love about old school RTS (and Total War games to an extent). Kinda like how watching ant-farm gives me this vibe I also get from playing city builders. Or looking down at NYC from Empire State Building. I'm emphasizing 'primal' because in the past few years I have learned that I actually enjoy watching huge trees move from strong wind. Watching all those leaves and branches sway in the breeze and trying to see the whole macro and micro at the same time is joyful and it is shared between that, my toys and RTS games. Another thing close to this is what Husky starcraft was mentioning during his playthrough of HotS campaign about how he loves watching NPCs battling it out in RTS games. There is something similar going on in there as well. And it being real time is kinda critical here. Maybe this is exact opposite of what illitarist is talking about. I just admire the sheer mess of it. More messier and uncountable, the better. At the same time individual readability is critical so it's not just pure mess. It's the kind of mess that forms out of compounding of very basic and readable elements.
  25. XCOM Enemy Unknown

It has tons of options to make the game both faster and easier (still bit too slow for me). Dynamic War (updated version of NSLW, with balance fixes that address previously mentioned flaws (although to correct that flaw, it was actually in your favor as fatigue and repair timers didn't scale while missions and UFOs came in less frequently so they offset this nerf against player by giving you way more resources)) Cinematic Mode (+15 aim) Friendly Sky (+ aim to aircrafts, forgot exact number) We Are Legion (starts with 2+ squad size upgrades) Cause without those you just have to play way more cautiously than even the orginal Xcom 2012 for a campaign that lasts longer. So just turn those on for much more faster and forgiving (still lot less forgiving than most contemporary games) campaign.
