  1. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I think this encapsulates my feelings towards "nerd" and they way it is used. I agree persecution complex is a very apt description of the GG reaction to the diversification of gamer culture. When women want to be treated like humans, others complain that they want to enslave or destroy men. When homosexuals want to get married, others complain that they will destroy marriage and turn our kids gay. When minorities want to abolish racial segregation, others complained it will dilute the prestige of white men. When scientists and environmentalists complained government is not doing enough to mitigate climate change, others complained that it will turn the country into a Communist dystopia. When critics suggest games are kind of sexist, others complain journalists want to destroy all games and kill all gamers. Sometimes I can't believe I'm the same species as some of these troglodytes.
  2. Dishonored - or - GIFs By Breckon

I prefer it on PC simply for the fact you can edit the config files so that unconscious bodies don't vanish from the level once they hit a memory limit.
  3. Movie/TV recommendations

That's a big call. Worse than Titan A.E., Chronicles of Riddick, Dune, John Carter, and the entire Star Wars prequel trilogy? Or have you not seen those?
  4. Nobody expects the Dragon Age Inquisition

The reviews give me more hope for an EA game than I've had for a very long time, which is even more surprising to me because the marketing for this game has been so ordinary. The biggest turn off for me though is that this game sounds extremely long. I'm not a highschool baby anymore, I don't have time or patience to spend 60+ hours on a single-player RPG unless it's really really good. Like Dark Souls good.
  5. Movie/TV recommendations

Well I just saw Interstellar and... I have no idea how to feel about this movie. I have many mixed emotions that add up to exactly zero. I don't think I understand films well enough to know what is wrong with this movie, but I think it tries to hit a balance between high reaching themes and down-to-earth character drama that doesn't really give enough justice to either of them. The following are comments on the tone of the film that could be interpreted as spoilers, but contain no actual plot details.
  6. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I think they have a point. I certainly consider the Ku Klux Klan more legitimate for having not died out in the 1870s. Ideas that old must be right.
  7. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

It makes total sense in the mind of gater that can't tell the difference between expressing a coherent argument and directing waves of harassment at someone.
  8. Sunset Overdrive

Don't get me wrong I don't think anyone should get their hopes up. But I'm not getting an xbone either so I don't loose out by waiting for this game to come on PC, even if it takes until the next console generation.
  9. Sunset Overdrive

True, but until last year they never released a multi-platform game and until Sunset Overdrive they never released an xbox exclusive, so it doesn't seem out of the question. They'll put it on whatever platform they're paid to, and if Microsoft Studios is paying them...
  10. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Exactly the reason I bought a Wii U, while I care not for xbone and ps4... ... at least until Bloodborne comes out. I think exclusives still matter but I think Nintendo's problem is third party support is garbage on the Wii U, which matters a lot more to people who only play games on a single console.
  11. OK I see how I might have diverged from what was being talked about on the podcast. What I wanted to say though - without having explained effectively - is that I might agree that most people probably don't truly care about visual quality, I do believe that marketing has manipulated a lot of people to want to upgrade their televisions and media formats to get higher video quality, such that they will want to do so even if they can't actually tell a spot of difference. As time goes on though there are always going to be more people interested in older films/television shows who have never been into them before just for the fact that more people are always being born, even if overall it becomes a more niche thing. Since we are spoiled when it comes to modern media these days I do think a lot of people my age (gen Y) look back with skepticism on older media because sometimes it doesn't hold up as well. It's not always a simple fix - Batman is still going to be cheap 60s camp that some will never like - but I think remasters are an effective way to firstly advertise the product again, and also to put something out on the market that better meets current expectations so people will pick it up for the first time.
  12. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Damnit just when that song stopped being stuck in my brain. Now I'm curious to see a Tim and Eric Star Wars, but it will probably be indistinguishable from the Holiday Special.
  13. This game looks pretty good to me. The art style is fine, after playing for a decent length of time it will fade away to just being collection of game mechanics like any multiplayer game. I'll take this over the typical Blizzard art direction which personally I find ugly. This doesn't seem to have a strong identity beyond clean sci-fi with rounded edge metal and lots of colours, but I think it will grow on me. Yes it is still dumb that with a variety of archetypes and silhouettes the women still have the same lean skinny body types with form fitting clothing. Widowmaker and Symmetra border on fetish models. Progress comes in stages I guess. The gameplay is right up my alley though. Fast arena FPS like Team Fortress or Unreal Tournament, but with a variety of active abilities seemingly inspired by DOTA heroes. I wonder if they ever considered a more direct first-person DOTA.
  14. Assassins Creed Unity

True that you needed UPlay anyway, but it was somewhere else to purchase from and some people would have wanted Steam integration. Doesn't matter now because they already changed their mind and it is back on Steam again. Cool I guess... I wonder if any of this was really Ubisoft's ideal choice, or maybe some dispute with Valve. Or maybe Ubisoft is just run by baboons.

  16. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I don't think it's a good idea at all to only have games reviewed by an uncritical target audience. It just sounds like a disaster feedback loop where the same games get made over and over again and no fresh ideas are brought to the table. Basically the mess that gaming has got itself into in the first place. It also doesn't reflect the variety of the gaming audience at large and provide game developers room for growth when the only people giving feedback are the dyed-in-the-wool fans. I think it's better to foster a variety of critics/publications with different voices and perspectives, and the customer is treated with the intelligence to find which voice best reflects their taste in games. For example a Jeff Gerstmann review of the lasted console FPS is useless to me because in my view he has bad taste in shooters. The rest of "Bill of Rights" is basically "I don't want people telling me that games have social responsibility as cultural artifacts." Fine. Watch a TotalBiscuit video instead.
  17. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

I feel like I'm being a jerk so I'm gonna say I'm really excited to see Rian Johnson write/direct the other 2 films! I have mixed feelings about J.J., but it seems that Hollywood is taking its mega-franchises more seriously after the Nolan-Batman films and giving them to good modern directors instead of hacks. Gareth Edwards doing a stand-alone film is also interesting, whatever the hell that thing is.
  18. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Considering the lead Jedi Masters die in both Episode 1 and Episode 4 it would be an extreme lack of awareness to kill whatever Jedi Masters remain in Episode 7, unless perhaps if it was in the first act. Do you honestly think there would ever be a Star Wars trilogy without Jedis though? You don't need to know the script of the film to understand how vague and generic a title it is. Seriously, the only way it could be more generic is if it was called Jedi Origins. In fact I'll give you some other names that will prove to be equally as relevant. Jedi Rising Dawn of the Force The Jedi Chronicles Jedi Generations Legacy of the Force Galactic Jedi Saga Return of the Sith All of them are Stock Subtitles.
  19. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

So? "The Force Awakens" can be applied to literally any first installment of a Star Wars trilogy, whatever the premise. It's also self-evident from very idea of there being another Star Wars trilogy. Like I said though it's really not important. There's just not much to talk about with these movies yet.
  20. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Functional yes, but it just sounds like it was spat out of a subtitle generator to me. It doesn't say anything meaningful about the piece. Whatever, it's the least important thing about the merits of a movie.
  21. Assassins Creed Unity

Wow. I though Ubisoft was trying to turn a corner on this garbage for the last couple of years, but now they've taken their ball and sulked on home. I'm not a big Steam fan - I want Steam to have more competition - but Uplay absolutely can not compete with the quality they are offering at the moment, and competition only works if the consumer actually has a choice.
  22. I don't think I agree. There has not been as much marketing push from the audio industry to guilt people into high quality audio equipment as there has been for televisions other video devices. With the rise of portable music libraries listening habits have changed a lot. Many people these days simply listen to music on their crappy Apple earbuds, their factory-equipped car speakers or portable iPhone docks. A lot aren't even aware of audio formats that are not mp3, however the rise of torrenting has lead to more people becoming more savvy with video formats and visual quality. In addition with Blu Ray being a proprietary format it is putting on a harder sell than FLAC would ever do.
