  1. Twin Peaks Rewatch 1: Pilot

I don't think Bobby's actor is like DiCaprio or some high octane actor, but my threshold for bad acting is pretty accepting (the only really "ugh, why?" scene was in the cell with the hooting.) But, whatever, some people are more critical, I get it. I think he has something decent to him. To elaborate, I see a difference between a great dramatic performance and a relatively minor role of a guy playing a weird teenager and that doesn't bother me. He's not great, not abysmal.
  2. Twin Peaks Rewatch 1: Pilot

As I watch more, I'm definetly much more interested in Bobby than most other teenagers in the show (besides Audrey, because she's the best)
  3. I love the discussions this show can instigate sometimes. Considerations of who truly put the fish in the percolator.
  4. I just don't see how its racist. There are stereotypes shown, and sometimes its pretty on the nose. But her character was not written with racist intent, I don't abide with that. Maybe I will change my mind about this going forward, but I don't see it.
  5. For what its worth, this rewatch effort is what finally has started to get me into Lynch. Of his major films, I've only seen Eraserhead. I only watched eight episodes or so of TPs the first time I gave it a shot. Now I'm trying to find time to view more of his films.
  6. Also on that topic, I watched Eraserhead on Sunday night and was so impressed with how he was able to make an ambient drone be so threatening and horrific. He's a master of taking simple things and really twisting them in just the right way.
  7. Chris, I totally get why you are only doing it once a week. I actually like conceptually the idea of spoiler chat. I will probably blow past the pace of the show, and then I get bonus content that I can listen to.
  8. In all honesty I've only watched up to episode eight before, so I have no real authority to comment beyond how I already did. I've seen passing reference to other interpretations but, you know, its Lynch. Of course there are interpretations. It could just be a transitional piece of filler. Wouldn't be surprising.
  9. The dream sequence just had me crestfallen when I saw it the second time. It was a truly great scene. One thing I love about Cooper is how geniunely he embraces these things. He's so unabashed in employing his Buddhist/mystic rock throwing technique, and he believes so fully in the power of his dream. He just exists in this world so well.
  10. So you guys talk about the traffic light as if it were random but in episode one (I believe) Cooper comments on the fact that the town is a place where a yellow stoplight still means slow down not speed up, and there was some thematic juxtaposition going down.
  11. I totally see why people take it that way, and why she did. Its probably true that's exactly where her character came from, but I just try to not read into thorny issues of race personally unless its so egregious that I can't not. But, certainly, one could easily take it the worst way, and I wouldn't fault them.
  12. I love Josie's overuse of idioms. Really funny little touch added in there. Also, "I went in there to see that ridiculous smorgasbord" is classic Audrey.
  13. Idle Thumbs 179: Shadow of Something

I personally will probably just lose steam interacting with systems designed just to wreck me.
  14. Idle Thumbs 179: Shadow of Something

I like some of the systems, but a lot of it just feels overgrown. Potentially going into those little control panels to rewire stuff gives it an almost Gunpoint bend, which I appreciate. But it doesn't seem to go deep, at least from what I've played. Same thing with the crafting system, and that horrendously-complicated looking UI you can essentially ignore. I like some systems too, though, I enjoy how rough and cinematic the stealth is, where you don't snap into cover you just sort of shamble down. One other complaint, why does Amanda slam those locker doors so hard. Seems like a good way to get caught.
  15. Idle Thumbs 179: Shadow of Something

Gormongous, man that's fascinating, My knowledge of LOTR basically ends at reading the books in like fifth grade and being slightly confused by the mid-20th century writing and Tolkien's prose. Really interesting ideas, especially how Tolkien's own beliefs tied into what he wrote. I echo Danielle's reserved optimism for Isolation. I have enjoyed the four and a half odd hours I've played, but it's also physically stressed me out. I love the Alien series, and I love the atmosphere and setting (god the game just looks beautiful on pc, so much work was obviously put into the lighting and whatnot). At the same time, I have problems with the overall feel of the game. It seems like they set out to make a prolonged slog, and in doing they set up these threats that would continually hold weight throughout the game. It seems like, no matter where you are, the Working Joes or the Alien will just fuck you, and there's almost nothing to be done. While that's a fair design decision to make, dealing with that threat for 16 hours just isn't appealing to me, and I'm having difficulty jumping back in, though I want to. Also, I've heard the game just feels nerfed on lower difficulty, which does seem like a design flaw. Also, you guys got deep into the weeds this week... wow... Watch Alien, then Aliens, then Alien 3 (but only the Assembly Cut because it's so much better than the theatrical release), then I guess Alien: Resurrection. You'd probably be fine if you didn't see the first one first, but sequentially they are much more interesting. And they are really interesting.
  16. Alien Isolation - The nightmare of Milky Joe

I'm about four hours in, really (sort of) enjoying it so far. I'm a fairly big Alien/s fan (what a weirdly branded franchise), not necessarily as much a fan of horror games. There are a lot of weird incidental things I really enjoy, there are a ton of really rewarding animations as you clunk cards into save locations, the game looks really great and the preservation of 1970's futurism is really cool. One question I keep having is: "Why Amanda Ripley?" I've been continually frustrated with the franchise being tied to Ellen, and thus far Amanda hasn't really been characterized much. The carrot-string of "you need to get this recording" is almost completely ignored (so far) except in one scene when you break into tears over the device being corrupted, and then recompose yourself. Using Amanda Ripley as the main character just feels like something someone was forced to do. Also, I haven't really been exposed to the alien much yet. So, I might be completely misguided and I know I have a lot to go.
  17. New people: Read this, say hi.

Hey all, I've been listening to the show for about a year. Never really thought about hopping on the forums until, well, right about now. I've had some middling experiences with forums; it's where I got my amazing name at a time before I was quite so self-aware.
