  1. Surreal yes, ridiculous might not be quite accurate. There isn't any attempt to further draw attention to the seamstress in the episode other than her existing.
  2. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

More clipping. Also recently came across this track by Chrysta Bell and David Lynch. Don't know how I didn't hear of this earlier.
  3. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

I was 9 years old when I saw The Phantom Menace (which also was the first movie I ever saw in a cinema, sorry for making everyone feel old). It was probably the first time I had seen a 'force-field' in a movie as well, I can't remember. Anyway, even though I thought it was "cool", I was mostly thinking about how incoherent and ridiculous the whole concept of a two-way transparent force-field that blocks laser (blaster whatever) blasts is. I don't have anything against the crossguard lightsaber at this point in time, just making a point that no one should underestimate kids' enthusiasm in pointless nitpicking.

Finally watched the documentary The Act of Killing, fuck
  5. That happened to True Detective, but I feel like the show itself was a deliberate subversion of audience obsession, unlike other shows that end up pandering to it.
  6. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Why are toasters even a thing? So primitive...

Watched Strange Days, the apocalyptic millennial paranoia feels really dated (and should have been even during the time of the movie's release), the racial-political tensions seem prescient and transgressive for a Hollywood film, the cyberpunk aspect is fascinating and disturbing but ultimately underexplored (apparently episode 10 of the first season of ghost in the shell was influenced by strange days which explains why i thought the premise felt familiar). The film is a hyper energetic mess that feels unique and captures a specific zeitgeist really well. There's also a lot of violence and rape, which complicates my already jumbled thoughts on Kathryn Bigelow's work. In short, watch it if you want.

Rewatched eXistenZ again after at least five years, such a great film. Considering doing a Cronenberg rewatch binge to see how his work holds up and if my feelings towards him have changed now. Haven't seen any of his stuff after Eastern Promises, which I expect I might appreciate more now. The notion of watching Crash again is a bit scary I must admit.
  9. Life

    E.T. Gone Homephones
  10. I thought it was Leo who attacks Jacoby in this episode?
  11. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Yasmine was great in Only Lovers Left Alive too.

So I finally watched Fruitvale Station because I already feel sick and angry. I needed that experience because i'm pretty geographically and culturally distant from the specific climate of racial tension in America, so it's easy for me to become impassive and complacent. Well I don't want to be impassive and complacent. Maybe at the end of the day it's still a petty and selfish reason to want to watch a film, with no greater effect on anything important in the world, but never forgetting what happened to Osacar Grant (and countless other people) is something that at least is achievable by me. Not sure what prompted me to over-explain why I watched Fruitvale Station, I think it's my pre-emptive counter to the criticism that topical, and other 'based-on-true-events' films seem to always receive (12 years a slave, Selma). Sorry.
  13. Ferguson

Mike Huckabee name drops Medgar Evers, equating his murderer with the protesters in Ferguson. http://www.salon.com/2014/11/24/mike_huckabee_compares_ferguson_protesters_to_white_segregationists_in_grotesquely_bigoted_blog_post/ People who want to not be murdered because of the colour of their skin are the same as "lynch mobs", and are 'embracing the same injustice they're protesting'. Fuck you Mike.
  14. Ferguson

Some people are saying protesters should emulate MLK. Why not Medgar Evers too? There are thousands of pacifists who have been murdered that people could 'emulate'. http://www.vox.com/2014/11/24/7278687/civil-rights-ferguson Fuck this.
  15. I really like Josie's (Joan Chen's) performance with Harry. It's very convincing, with an added layer of uncertainty about whether she is also 'acting' within the story. The meta-soap opera melodramatics are great.
  16. I guess now isn't the best time to admit to never having interacted with Pokemon on any level (video games, card games, tv shows) despite being in the demographic and ample opportunities to have done so. Also never had a gameboy since it seems like that was what the Pokemon game was originally released on? Anyway sorry for going all 'meta-first-world-problems'. At least I know that Taylor Swift, uhh... exists.
  17. anime

Yeah i fucking love that channel, and anything Kon related, and match cuts, and 'jumping into a t-shirt moving towards camera cuts'. Mind Game is the best too.
  18. I saw this (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/sep/17/hong-kong-tycoon-rolls-royce-phantoms) a while ago and couldn't help but connect Stephen Hung with Pagan Min. (Stephen Hung is the destitute gent on the left)
  19. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

A bit obsessed with FKA Twigs right now (like everyone else apparently). Listened to a bit of clipping. for the first time.

I've been on the fence about seeing Fury, it's getting a lot of praise but i've also heard: I'll probably see it on Monday.

Speaking about podcasts, I really like this (one-off?) about Satoshi Kon's work: http://www.slantmagazine.com/house/article/quothes-the-internetquot-a-conversation-on-satoshi-kon It's from 2008 and the background noise makes it difficult to hear the conversation at points, but they do provide a transcript and I really really like the discussion. Just taking advantage of any excuse to link this.
  22. Actual reading about games thread

Just came across this article on Eurogamer about Never Alone: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-11-20-never-alone The opening paragraph alone is amazing and prompted me to share before actually finishing the article. The author is Daniel Starkey (https://twitter.com/dcstarkey) and he seems like a really interesting writer. Doing some research on where else he is published (destructoid, kotaku, eurogamer etc.) led me to: http://fiveoutoftenmagazine.com/about/ which also looks like an interesting publication. Also I realised I had read one other amazing article by him a few years ago: http://www.gameranx.com/features/id/11144/article/my-mother-commander-shepard/ Going to be keeping an eye out for his writing.
  23. This War of Mine

Saw this come up on a friend's wishlist and then mentioned in the newest thumbs podcast. Looks very bleak. This comment on rockpapershotgun is beautiful though: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/11/18/this-war-of-mine-review/#comment-1738939
  24. There's a lot of plot advancement in this episode, but I kind of understand where Jake is coming from. Many of the events are follow-ups to previous episodes, the log lady, the pay-off for the joke, Leo etc. No major new characters are introduced and a lot of the episode feels like an explanation of previous events. Lots of stuff happens, but compared to the earlier episodes there are fewer completely new developments so it feels relatively uneventful. Bear in mind i'm a first time viewer and haven't seen the following episodes yet.
  25. The Dream Machine

Double posting and bumping the thread to make sure everyone knows the 5th episode is out now, and apparently larger than all previous episodes combined.
