  1. John Dies at the End - David Wong/Jason Pargin

They're both really great, really solid books with some AMAZING concepts and some of the most seamless blending of horror and comedy this side of Edgar Wright. The first book's questioning of reality and Lovecraftian elements coupled with the body horror and cosmic terror of the second one...color me IMPRESSED (also: check out the Cracked podcast. Some incredible, insightful stuff). THAT said: the second one ditches a LARGE amount of the humor and substitutes it with soapboxing to a level that ALMOST made me quit reading it at times. The first one's biggest flaw is the reporter's huge, out-of-nowhere anti-Video game rant (a favorite of Wong's articles, where he's been doomsaying the industry for the last seven years), but it became a running, recurring theme in the second book. I mean some of it was close to Jack Thompson levels of disconnect. It speaks REALLY well to the strength of the rest of both books that I STILL enjoyed them in spite of that.
  2. A Song Of Ice And Fire

I know this is a LATE response, but I'm new here: I've heard nothing but good things about his Wild Card novels (superhero world where people get random powers corresponding to cards in a deck) and the Hedge Knight series is a Song of Ice and Fire prequel.

Thanks for the head's up. Amazing rant that will do sadly little. But at the very least an entertaining read.
  4. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Dishonored- I have no idea WHY, I just could NOT get into this game. It seems like, on paper, it was tailor-made for me. A blend of sci-fi and fantasy, intriguing gameplay elements and a vibrant world, crazy-deep mission structures that allow for incredibly unconventional win scenarios and after the first mission, which I beat by branding the guy, I just COULDN'T keep playing it. Also not sure it counts since there's no real "end," but I keep WANTING to play Hearthstone more, and can't seem to bring myself to. I've never wanted to be a guy that netdecks, if I'm playing someone else's deck with someone else's strategy, I'm not sure why I'M playing the game, but I also can't seem to rise above rank 18 without finding myself UTTERLY dominated. It's unfortunate because I CAN have fun with it, and I understand that losing is an integral part of getting better (I spent three years in the bottom half of my household of 6 friends at Super Street Fighter IV) but there's just something about this game that grates on me.
  5. New people: Read this, say hi.

I'm NEW! I'm supposed ta CHECK things as I see 'em! Seems like I'm supposed to say something about how I got here...WELL! heard Danielle Riendeu (almost positive I butchered that spelling) on Bombin' in the AM: With Scoots and the Wolf. I'd heard a lot about Idle Thumbs' Podcast, but never listened. And it turns out I actually know someone on it. Which led to some minor hilarity.
  6. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

That feeling is not likely to go away when you see all the "We're winning! WE'RE ACTUALLY WINNING!!!111" garbage happening right now... This is one of the best examples showing that this is, by and large, a campaign of hate being waged by children. Things like that is EXACTLY how a kid sees the world: black and white. Corrupt and pure. The notion that sports writers are friends with the coaches/players or that political journalists drink at the same bars as politicians do is LUDICROUS to them.
