  1. This is especially bizarre to me after their release of mario-maker encouraged streaming content.  It seemed like they were starting to get it.  I guess not.

That said, it is highly questionable about whether it is within their rights legally to DMCA this content.  What's more important, is that it is allowable within the Youtube policies.  If, for example, Nintendo tried this with twitch, I suspect they would find a lot more resistance from the platform.

  2. Ewoks, I'd say there's a bit of Column 3 in that I didn't think this conversation was particularly more esoteric in its generalities than CS:GO or Dota conversation, but at the same time that you're probably working with a glossary of terms that's just different enough from other LoMas that it's not understood vocab, while not being hyperspecific enough that someone would think to define it on a general podcast. You also don't have familiar player or team names to grab on to as your rock to follow the topic. She mentioned Acorn and Flame, and I'm not sure it was completely clear that they are both players who share the same position on LGD (The team that won the China auto-bid). I feel the same in DOTA. I read the DOTA Silly Season thread and see people gasp when team rosters are released and I go "Huh, this is an interesting bunch of grouped letters that have no context to me. But someone is enthused! Perhaps one day they will tell me why."

Yeah, I'm sure it's mostly just this.  It's be cool to get a glossary of basic terms or something for different games somewhere so I could follow along.  I think it's always going to be hard to follow an interview for a game you don't follow, but maybe with something like that it'd be a bit easier.

  3. BKB's actually pretty good vs riki!

Yeah.  It removes silence and miss chance of his smokescreen and prevents him using blink strike.  Unless he is WAY ahead, it makes it effectively impossible for him to go on most bkb heroes during its duration.

  4. I honestly hate my base and that I have to deal with it at all.  It's so weird and annoying digging through a billion menus (which are horrible in the PC port) just to unlock things.  And then I'm supposed to just walk around for no reason to raise troop morale.  I capture tons of people because otherwise I can't get items, but the capturing is a comical hot air balloon extraction.  I feel like I am playing the worst economy game in between missions.  I am wondering what would happen if I just ignored it altogether because it occupies most of my game time and is almost unbearable for me.  Otherwise, it's one of the very best games I've played, the peaks are high, but so much of the game is listening to tapes and digging through menus.

  5. The LoL interview got a bit too inside baseball for me.  I basically couldn't follow it.  I'm sure it is harder to keep things accessible with guests, especially ones with such deep knowledge.  I don't know, though, the CS:GO person who came on the show was really good for listeners who haven't followed the game like me.  This was pretty hard to follow.  I think it might be because you follow LoL more closely than CS:GO so the topic you bring up are deeper and Kelsey Moser is obviously very knowledgeable.  I guess is is a hard line to walk when you cover more games than any given listener probably follows.

    Some possible solutions:

    1. The ideal is just to make them accessible for listeners of any experience/knowledge level with the game.

    2. Or, make some or all of the interviews intentionally in depth and put them at the end of an episode and sign post that you're going to try to go in depth on a topic.

    3. Something else?  Maybe I just need to stop being a baby?

On a positive note, as someone who barely follows Starcraft, the discussion of the patch was pretty interesting.  I think you all are spot on about Blizzard's willingness to make big changes being a good sign.  Hopefully it will breath new life in SC2.

  6. A quick note on urn charges w/r/t the previous conversation about things with charges.  It always makes sense to use urn charges when you have them.  You get one per enemy death within your radius except when you are empty, then you get 2.  So, it is really forgiving of being used because after a fight you'll gain some back, more if you're using them.

I actually disagree about avoiding BKB at lower levels.  I think you should have it and just use once a team fight starts.  Don't worry about saving charges.  Use it every time.  the enemy won't know what to do and it is still a great item even when it is down to 5 seconds.

For wand/magic stick, I made a specific "Oh shit" button.  So I have an inventory spot that I keep my "Oh shit I'm about to die item."  So, early game I'll have my wand/stick there and just hammer it when I dying.  Then I'll replace it with a BKB or Uel's or Ghost Scepter, or whatever defensive active item I've bought (if I have one).  Eventually you'll stop panic hammering the "Oh shit" button and start using it at the right time.

  7. Oh also when you find someone cool or who wants to help, ask if they want to play together.  I did a bit of that when I started and aside from playing with a friend, it was the best thing to help me learn.

  8. I think the first handful of games are the worst, unfortunately.  It's where you are matched with other new players and older players who are bad enough and toxic enough to have never improved.

After awhile, you'll still get flamed/criticized some, but usually you can either recognize that the person was right and take it on the chin or realize that they are just angry (usually about their own play).  One thing I've learned is to just immediately mute someone (And tell your team they are muted) if they flame.  Just realizing that I don't have to listen to them was very freeing for me.  It made the idea that I didn't want to play because I might get flamed disappear because I always have the power to not be flamed.  I also find I play better when I just mute them.  Sometimes I'll mute people even if they are flaming a teammate.

If you try again I recommend liberal uses of the mute button.

  9. I actually think he is NA's only decent offlaner other than Universe.  I'm sure that the role he'll play on this roster.  It's interesting how big the gap between fan and player opinion on bulba is though.  I've seen EE, pdd, aui, and rtz all say that Bulba is a good player.  The community thinks he is bad though.

  10. Yawar is amazing.  He's not quite as good as Suma1l in my opinion, but he is a great talent.  I've seen him beat RTZ mid.  He'd been playing carry on some NA teams as a stand-in, but I think he'll be more comfortable as a mid since it is what he always plays in pubs.  I think this team has a chance to be really good.

Twig- why don't you like bulba?

  11. These are my thoughts on Chinese teams and what to like about them.  All this will likely change once the Chinese teams shuffle:

Obviously a lot of us will be looking at CDEC to see if they can continue their high level of play.  It's interesting to not that they used to be the LGD B-team.  They were LGD.CDEC until they got good enough to become their own brand.

Personally, I am a fan a Ehome (or whatever team RotK is captaining).  Rotk is one of the best captains in the world and most charismatic players in China.  He is one of the players for the TI4 second place VG.  China has a problem with their experience players teaming up to make super teams instead of finding and fostering new talent.  With Ehome, Rotk changed that and is playing with a lot of fresh Chinese talent and found some very good results.

    If you didn't see it,

from TI was pretty touching especially when he talks about his grandma.  See also:

VG are like an all star team.  Their support duo of Fy and Fenrir were famous for being the best roamers in dota.  Super as a mid is top tier and can play a lot of heroes. Iceiceice is a top 3 offlaner and any given game or tournament he is able to take over even from that position.  The rumors are that they are getting Burning who is a legendary carry player from china.  He is the most popular chinese player in china.

If you ask a Chinese fan who the best captain is, the answer will probably be Xiao8 (with western fans saying puppey or ppd).  He's the reason LGD were so good.  He and their offlaner Yao are contemplating retirement (which frankly never lasts in Chinese dota).  Hopefully they stick around.  Their mid player Maybe is pretty much the mid in dota who played suma1l even in lane without a billion ganks.  He is an amazing player and still very young.  It's always worth watching out for him.  MMY is a long time, stable support player.

    Quick hits:

IG former TI winners.  Chuan is one of the Chinese players who engages with the western scene the most.

Newbee won TI4.  Then Xiao8 left and all their players decided to player RPGs instead of dota.  So they've been really bad.  Watch out for Rabbit.  He was a beast at TI4 on LGD.

HGT a good mix of longtime players like ZSMJ and new players.  Tier 2 chinese team, but always on the verge of breaking through.

Energy Pacemakers I think they may be a name to look out for.  They're a bunch of players I never heard of who were slaying people in chinese qualifiers for events.  They haven't really closed the deal and won a chinese tournament, but I think it'll happen soon.

  12. My understanding is that the tournament was just him and a bunch of his friends, and there was no money involved. Maybe not the best judgment call, but not really anything to care about either.

But I don't know, I am super bummed about this lineup. I was really hoping for the 8k MMR Jordanian pubstar Miracle to join the team. But this lineup seems like it is gonna be a train wreck.

It was in FPL.  So there was money on it, but like 100 bucks or something.  Enough for it to not be the time, but little enough that you can understand why he did it as a joke without thinking.

Mostly people don't like him for being such as ass about it afterwards.
