  1. [RELEASE] The Eyes of Luigi

    - Trophies that Mario has won from tennis, kart racing etc. - Copies of books written by Mario about his success. - Adoring fanmail. - Positive reviews of games that featured Mario and not Luigi.
  2. [Release] World of Blanks

Thanks! Latest progress: - If an enemy spots the player it moves towards them, and will ignore them if they get too far away or lose line of sight. Pathfinding looks like way too big to deal with for this project, so as long as enemies are in closed off areas they should always be able to find the player just by moving sideways. - The player's weapons are working much better now. It's easy to add multiple weapons with different attributes, and weapon ammo and reloading are implemented. And now the player has an assault rifle! - Did some work to make different types of platforms so that enemies can track you through some of them (but still won't try to shoot you through them). I'm going to link these GIFs since they'll make this page take ages to load. Here's day 2: http://i.imgur.com/417Oc4I.gif
  3. Your zombies look great! This already looks fantastic.
  4. WIZARD JAM 2016 // Welcome Thread

Welcome! Remember you don't have to start your game right away, just have it submitted by the end date. Take the weekend to think about it if you need to.
  5. Destiny

Has anyone been back for the April update? I'm enjoying it so far, the increased light level has been a nice reason to get back to King's Fall, and the extra light makes the raid a little bit easier too. Challenge of Elders is also really fun! It's fairly easy but it's a good excuse to try different character builds to rack up points. Mostly it's just really fun to have multiple endgame activities that reward good gear instead of just one. If anyone wants to play again I'd love to get some Thumbs groups going again. I'm Wracketeer on PSN.
  6. Hitman: Steve Gaynor Edition

I've caved in and bought this due to the constant praise on the podcast. I'm having a great time so far but I'm really bad at this game. I wonder if maybe it's presented the wrong way around? I found the first mission super overwhelming, but now that I'm doing the escalations I'm getting a better feel for the mechanics. Part of me feels like maybe the escalations should be given to you first so you can see the different mechanics at play in each level before you attempt the sandbox run. Maybe that would ruin the whole progression of the game though; I've never played one of these so I might just be approaching it the wrong way. Either way, I'm having an awesome time. I poisoned the sushi so the dude's bodyguard got sick, then stole his clothes. That didn't help though since it made him suspicious when I got close, but I was able to follow him into the garden when he made a phone call and take him out. Someone saw it happen so the bodyguard disguise was compromised, so I had to sneak into the basement and steal a bartender disguise. Then I got a security disguise and stole the fireworks trigger. I wanted to lure out the woman to the balcony, and I realised I could climb up to the top floor, so I got up on the balcony, hid in the corner and pressed the button. I shot her when she came out and slipped back onto the railing and down to the garden to escape in the helicopter. The whole thing was kind of nonsense but I loved coming up with dumb plans and improvising ways to get stuff done. I don't even want to touch the new level until I've completely explored Paris.
  7. I'm looking for a team to help make World of Blanks! World of Blanks is a sidescrolling shooter where bullets are incapable of killing people. Being shot by a bullet makes you inconveniently bounce around. The player progresses through levels by shooting enemies and physicsing them our of the way in order to progress. If there's time, I'm planning on implementing a multiplayer mode where two players try to bounce each other out of the arena. I'm developing in Gamemaker and I need an artist who can work in 2D. I don't have any requirements for an art style so I'd like to join with someone who can help develop a suitably weird (or overly self-serious) theme and character. I also need someone who can contribute audio/music. If you're interested, message me in Slack. My name there is my name here.
  8. Oh, my bad, I didn't realise the console versions had those problems too.
  9. Sure, I don't think those complaints are illegitimate (especially the always online stuff). But the guy who says the game is unplayable because the framerate drops to 40FPS when he looks in a mirror is probably exaggerating how much that ruined his experience.
  10. The Steam reviews for Hitman seem like they've been flooded by "PC Master Race" babies because it's one third complaints about online only, one third complaints about sub-60 framerates and one-third complaints about it being episodic. I'm really excited to try it out because from this podcast it sounds awesome. This isn't quite relevant but the question about the basketball facebook game made me think of Armed and Dangerous. The assault rifle in that game had a cone of fire that simulated recoil by growing in side the longer you held down the trigger. I figured out pretty quickly that the recoil reset to zero as soon as you let go of the fire button. Since the first bullet was always exactly in the centre of the crosshair, you could fire full auto with the assault rifle just by clicking and releasing fast enough; letting go of the button would reset the recoil, and firing again would always shoot a perfectly accurate bullet. As long as you could click fast enough you could fire the assault rifle with no recoil so you could basically snipe with it.
  11. WIZARD JAM 2016 // Welcome Thread

I assume like previous jams we'll do individual threads for games, but I'm looking for some other people so I'll need to post in that thread. Or do you mean the current team building thread is for people who don't already have ideas?
  12. WIZARD JAM 2016 // Welcome Thread

Update on my prototype: It works! It's not perfect yet but I got what I wanted out of it. If anyone's interested I'm going to put a proper explanation in the team building thread later on.
  13. What happened to Sean on Idle Thumbs?

    Found him.
  14. WIZARD JAM 2016 // Welcome Thread

That's one of the concepts I'm thinking about. I'm not too focused on the details right now, I'm just trying to get the physics working reliably. I could end up even doing a multiplayer mode if there's enough time (Which of course there won't be, but it'd be nice.)
  15. WIZARD JAM 2016 // Welcome Thread

I'm using ScreenToGif, it seems to get a bit confused with colours sometimes but it's really easy to use.
  16. WIZARD JAM 2016 // Welcome Thread

Progress! I spent last night and tonight getting to grips with the gamemaker physics engine. My goal is to make enemies pinball around the room when shot. So far it's about 30% working; they'll move when shot, but since their rotation is locked the motion doesn't take into account where the bullet hit. And it does this: I guess they can only move right for now. I need to do more digging on how the impulse is applied and why the way I'm applying it only moves an object in one direction.
  17. Idle Thumbs Streams

Something goes a bit funny with the youtube archive of the latest DS3 stream, at 35:20 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meG7FDdDS60?t=35m20s Just for future reference!
  18. WIZARD JAM 2016 // Welcome Thread

Sure, I'd be happy to! I was planning on starting something tonight and posting in the other thread to find a team.
  19. WIZARD JAM 2016 // Welcome Thread

It's cool if we experiment with prototypes before the jam right? I've got my idea sorted but I want to try a few things to see if the gameplay is actually fun.
  20. I can't believe they didn't name this episode "Try to Incentivise Dads." Think of the games you could make with that! I didn't play much of the Doom beta but I had a fairly good time with it. I'm not sure it'll be mega popular but it's not a bad game by any means. I've also seen people compare it to Halo and that comparison bugs me for two reasons. One, it doesn't play anything like Halo, the only similarity is that you have an armoured space marine guy, which is a ridiculous comparison because Doom had an armoured space marine guy. Two, when people make this sort of comparison to Halo they're usually doing it in a negative way, which I can't stand because Halo is a really good game. What people are really mad about is how Halo popularised a new style of shooter that worked well on consoles and inadvertently brought an end to the wild west era of late 90's/early 2000's PC shooters which didn't really have a unifying design philosophy behind them. When people talk shit about Halo they're really taking an elitist stance against dumb console shooters for babies and lamenting how modern shooters aren't like the Good Old Days. But there have been shooters that tried to recapture the old-school style (The Rise of the Triad remake comes to mind) that all seem to have missed the mark, because it's so easy to throw the baby out with the bathwater when you intentionally try to eschew modern design conventions. Because modern design conventions are fun! And if they weren't fun they wouldn't be design conventions! With that attitude, I don't see how Doom can win. If it features modern conventions like weapon loadouts then it's a dumb baby shooter for console kiddies, but if it tries to be a faithful recreation of days gone by then it risks just not being very good because modern video games have far more mechanics to consider than games from 1995.
  21. TITANFLAPS 2

Being ex-Call of Duty devs, running out of players probably isn't something they've had experience with. I hope they can keep people playing for longer this time, there were times I tried to go back to Titanfall and couldn't find a match in any region.
  22. UK Thumbs

So who's excited about that EU referendum? Boris Johnson versus David Cameron, eh? Personally I hope that somehow, both sides lose.
  23. Life

I haven't spoken to anyone I knew from university for over a year. I got pretty depressed in my final year, and shut myself in my room for about six weeks with not even my flatmate coming to check on me. I had a pretty horrible realisation that I wasn't as important to my friends as they were to me. I don't know if there was something that made people want to avoid me or if I was just bad at making friends because I had to struggle constantly to even have a social life at university.
  24. TITANFLAPS 2

Sure, I'm not mad because I want to win all the time in video games, but that's exactly what was happening here, just for the other team! Our team had to constantly lose in service of the people on the other team having the cool rebel fantasy, because there was only one outcome to the story in a scenario with two outcomes.
