Idle Thumbs 204: The Reader's Pleasure
Vasari replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I think people are missing the obvious comparison with The Order: 1886. Put the two side-by-side and it's easy to see how well-presented Bloodborne is. -
There's a piece in The Guardian with Miyazaki that's more focused on him rather than just his games. I had no idea he only joined From Software when he was 29. It sounds like he was a nobody at the company until he got a chance to take control of Demon's Souls. http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/mar/31/bloodborne-dark-souls-creator-hidetaka-miyazaki-interview

Saw this on twitter, if you're in the US and don't have a PS4: http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-4-Bloodborne-Bundle/dp/B00UZGQ3G4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1427753456&sr=8-3&keywords=ps4+bloodborne+bundle Playstation 4 + Bloodborne + The Last Of Us Remastered + $20 Amazon gift card, for $399. For the price of a PS4 you're getting arguably the two best games and a gift card.

I knocked the tower gunner off the edge in Old Yarnham. He doesn't drop anything good, right? -

You're absolutely right about what you said in the spoiler. (More Gascoigne spoilers below) -
Well at least SOMEONE noticed >: (

As far as I can tell, the graveyard/crematorium system is 100% exactly the same as the landfill/incinerator system. Except the corpses don't generate electricity. That's my excuse for why every time I want to build a cemetery, I always open up the "garbage" tab before the "healthcare" tab.

It took a bit of digging, but I tracked down the interview where Miyazaki specifically explains why the storytelling in the Souls games is so vague and clouded: I remember alot of people talking about the same things when Dark Souls first came out that were talked about on the podcast. Lots of people wondered how much of it was actually intentional and how much just unintentionally turned out to be so engaging. If you look into interviews with the developers (Especially Miyazaki himself) it's clear that they are all ridiculously smart, creative people who knew exactly what they were doing. There are a few great interviews out there online, and if you're a fan I recommend buying Dark Souls Design Works from amazon. It contains a huge interview with all of the design leads for the game, and hearing them talk candidly about such an inscrutable game is really fascinating. They even joke about how easy the last boss ended up being. This part was floating around a while ago on twitter/imgur and it's my absolute favourite quote:

The gun basically works like the shield did before, except you can't stand still and block everything. Shooting enemies will often interrupt them, and if you hit them at the right moment (just before their attack hits you) you'll stagger them, which leaves them open for a counterattack/riposte. -

Doing a game design degree, this is exactly what people thought about point-and-click adventure games. "Everything is just stuff you click on, so I just have to make the art and the story, right?" I know loads of people who tried to build one, before they realised that what it actually involves is creating unique code for interacting with every object. Personally I'd say the easiest style of game to get started with is a top-down shooter or exploration game. There's no platforming or gravity, no complicated menus or inventory screens, and no serious logic. You start by making a character move around, then make walls with collision, enemies that follow the player, and bullets that shoot out from the player and disappear when they hit a wall or enemy. 90% of the game is creating, moving and destroying sprites. Obviously there are a dozen ways to make it more complicated, but it's very easy to reach the stage where you've made something fun. -
Damnit, I'm really busy right now and I don't have time to write up a big post, but you should google "Theatre of the Oppressed". It's not exactly what you're asking for, but it's a form of theatre where a problem is posed via a scenario performed by actors and the audience is involved in the decision making to find a solution.

Just realised this isn't out in the UK until Friday. Fuuuuuuck. -
This is Cookie. He's 18 years old, neurotic, and full of arthritis. He sheds constantly and his list of fears includes everything. He's pretty dumb most of the time, but the one thing he figured out is that getting his face scratched feels good, so when he's happy he whacks his head into things to simulate the effect of being petted. One of these pictures shows him after he got out of bed and walked two feet before laying down to sleep again. He does that alot. Life is hard for an old man cat. He has one arm outstretched because he also once learned that if he sleeps somewhere he's not supposed to and someone tries to pick him up, he can dig his claws in and make it really hard for them to move him. Now he just does that no matter where he is.

I'm really anal about not using mods because they turn off achievements. I'm getting really good at bulldozing derelict buildings.

I did that once at a halloween party. Turns out she was dressed as a character from a miyazaki film.

I'm in the exact same position. Living in the country where I grew up was tough without a car, but being in the city now I can walk almost anywhere, and being in Scotland I'm a megabus away from any other city. It's not a huge deal not being able to drive and most people I know don't have a license (or at least don't have a car). The one hassle is not being able to transport my own stuff when I move to a new flat.

I guess there's a bug with upgrading roads to one way, they always seemed to point the wrong direction. I was able to bulldoze the whole thing and put down the right roads. I get the feeling I'm going to have to rebuild most of this corner of the city because it's a real mess right now.
-
I can't seem to get one way roads to face the right direction. I'm trying to upgrade them at the city limits and they always point towards the highway which disconnects the road. Is there a button to toggle which direction they go?
-
The entrance to my city is getting backed up really far. How should I build roads to direct traffic in?
