I think I must be a terrible person because as soon as I pictured the stack of Highlights I thought to myself "What if the person who left those behind just stuck a playboy somewhere in the middle?". No parent is gonna bother looking at them all individually.

Idle Thumbs 190: A Very Spectrum HoloByte Christmas

My thoughts exactly. I love the way it gave him a kind of agency but it seems like they didn't fully consider how he should interact with the world beyond "he hits on Shepard". A better example is how Tali and Garrus can start a relationship if you aren't with either of them. -
Idle Thumbs 190: A Very Spectrum HoloByte Christmas

I just mean as somebody who is supposed to be a close friend to me and who has romantic feelings for me he should have at least acknowledged the fact that I wasn't single. That's not a nice thing to do amongst a close group of friends. It felt like the whole sequence was an afterthought. Somebody at bioware just thought "We should let the players know he's gay somehow". It didn't feel like natural character interaction. -
Idle Thumbs 190: A Very Spectrum HoloByte Christmas

As I recall, Kaiden tried to make a move on my Shep. He invited me to meet him at the citadel for drinks then told me he had feelings. I was already in a relationship with Tali so I awkwardly turned him down. I kinda wish they had looked at current romantic status before triggering the sequence honestly. It made him seem like kind of a dick. -
I mean I can see why somebody wouldn't want to have their position challenged. You weren't outrageous; it was a reasonable response to an unreasonable position, but if somebody said that in response to anything I said (and believed) I would be upset too. Beyond having supernatural patience for bullshit there isn't really a good way to engage with people like that.

Yeah, me either. Did the link break or something?

The interpretation I'd most often heard for Totoro was that it referenced a well known case where two young girls went missing and turned up dead. Totoro is a kind of grim reaper easing souls on and the Cat Bus being the portal into the afterlife. Here's a short article on the interpretation. http://kotaku.com/5926248/totoro-isnt-all-cute-for-some-hes-the-god-of-death

No, it did turn into a dick but it was motion blurred to all hell and we only saw it for like 3 frames. It was the scene in the gym storage room Twig.

Seriously? I've got a friend who has entered a game, I've asked him to please share any hilarious emails he gets.

In today's edition of GamerGate Lacks Reading Comprehension, apparently Anita gave a talk discussing ways lawmakers and social media companies can help address the problems of online harassment. A couple of slides got tweeted out and GG interpreted them as "lobbying for internet censorship". Here's the KiA thread in case you don't believe me, I know I wouldn't. http://np.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/2lsh06/anita_sarkeesian_co_have_begun_lobbying_for/

As Anthony Burch put it on twitter: "yes it is a slight bummer the overwatch girls all have slim body types but hey, they're not cleavage-y sex dolls and they're half the roster. this is *exactly* the kind of thing mainstream games should be doing -- normalizing diversity and showing it can be fucking cool as balls. Blizzard has the reach and the chops to make diversity accepted and fun to a huge audience of people, which is fucking wonderful."

Yeah, their format precludes linking to individual headings so..... it takes some scrolling

Ming sounds like a forgotten racist term. Also, that villain looks a little like Aurini. Fitting.
-
Yeah, Zoe was focusing on the fact that online harassment and chan trolls directly lead to the murder of a woman.

Is Todd a member of these forums because that article is shockingly close to the stuff we're talking about, breaking down the differences between characters who are sexy-for-sexy sake and those that try to justify their pandering, etc.

Man, I'd totally play King of Pain! Too bad cosmetic items can't change base character models as far as I know.

We haven't seen much of the worse misogyny lately, unless the victims have just been too afraid to speak out. The fact that I can even entertain that thought makes it depressing though. In other news, I'm seeing an increasing number of "I used to be a GG supporter" posts on GamerGhazi and elsewhere, so that's good I guess.

Still not really sure I understand what's going on here. The only name I recognize is Anil and from what I understand he was an unrelated journalist who Cernovitch attacked over nothing.

The guy I usually go to for anime critique is a big fan of the manga and says it explores some pretty interesting themes. I like how the character is appropriately scared of everything happening but isn't just a Shinji parody or a shonen badass stereotype. It's fun enough to continue until the real meat of the show picks up. Here's the critic's blog btw. Check out some of his essays, they're fantastic.

This is totally tangential, but does anyone else feel really bad for the girl in the opening ad block who can't pronounce the word Chimp? I feel like it was almost a little mean to leave it in there, but I'm probably being oversensitive.

Well to be fair, when O'Reilly goes on Stewart you know that, even if he isn't actively making fun, Stewart agrees with you that O'Reilly is a nutjob. The reason Gaters are mad at Colbert is because in their mind he's drunk the kool-aid. A more apt comparison would be if Stewart invited some MRA and supported his position that men need protection from feminists.

Oh god. I feel physically ill reading those. Those people are monsters.

I think I also just have an exceptionally strong negative reaction to being accused of lying. Probably some minor childhood trauma or something. I get unnaturally angry when it happens.

I don't really know why but this message in particular really got to me more than anything else said directly to me...

No journalists involved? Check. No advertising money involved? Check. Participants with a known feminist agenda? Check. This checks out guys. It's totally about ethics in game journalism.
