  1. Non-video games

PSA - back in stock again. Sold out in a few hours last time
  2. Idle Food - Cooking!

this weekend was orthodox easter. My ma hosts 40-80 people (depending if it is catholic on the same day - or if its raining) The main attraction is the traditional lamb roast. My recently late grandfather used to run the cooking part, but over the last several years had taught my brothers and i the ropes to prep work and rough cooking times and know when its done. We have modified some of the spices & opted for a slower & longer cooktime. Additionally we get a +/-40lb lamb for better yield and better for the longer cook time (~7hrs) inside spoiler tag for cooking instructions & photos. Might be a little graphic for some folks
  3. Life

just staying on that side of the river you could go to wollenskys (nice steak place), highline bar (more loungey), harry carays (nicer restaurant, not the touristy BS), or go north into gold coast for some slick places (although night time gets gross), if you are dumping your car could easily redline/brown line up to lake view, boys town, or ravenswood or west on the blueline to wicker park or logan square for great options. i unfortunately have a packed weekend otherwise would love to meet up. putting faces to avatars and podcasts voices would be nice
  4. Air flow is a tough issue - I have never had a problem with heat unless something is broken or full of cat hair. Most of my case fans are on manual control (i just realized this case is 7yrs easy) - i set them to low and let the mobo control the main exhaust. It runs a 140 out the top, 120 out the back and two (only 1 functioning) intakes in the front. this is pretty close pic i found on google - i suspect mine is out of production now To answer your question - i dont see why not, but it will likely be spinning up and down as the CPU heats up and down. This could cause problems with the fan, the CPU trying to cool and not able, or an annoying amount of spin up - I would go with the splitter if airflow / heat becomes a problem.
  5. talk about dota lans is eerily aligned to my own experience we have been doing Dota LANs for +/- 12yrs now and used to have 10 people show up for dota1 full team stack which was great. Except getting everyone with varying OS', setups, winXP silly networking etc. it was an easy an hour setup prior to getting people up and going Now...with adult lives...we usually pull a consistent 5 or a rare 6th for the awkward 3v3. My brother hosts and has a closet full of cat6 cables, power strips, and a larger router only used every few months for this exact purpose. We usually order pizza, but I like the idea of an adult meal to not feel like human garbage the next day. Closer related still - we've had LAN days (usually with too much beer) where easy lose a dozen games - but when playing for all day it doesnt feel so bad. My wife is also expecting this fall and I suspect i have 1 - 3 of these events left before it becomes a major hassle to put together The same-room interactivity is great and produces some of the best goofs. I feel like it is a lost event for young people these days, even going over to a friends house and playing a game together locally is a lost event. I think lan/local games will be a (small) pillar of my parenting encouragement
  6. Recently completed video games

i had not heard of this prior to Reyturner's post and tried demo as well tonight the fist boss pounded me to a pulp for a while, i sorta figured it out - and arrow to the heart/face. super satisfying!
  7. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

added! i love watching spelunky play - im just a baby garbage gamer at it. Hell is a dream goal, im happy clearing jungle (baby garbage time)
  8. Plug your shit

Wrigley Field is opening sunday My company has been building the big outfield signs the last 2 months or so. I got to design the fabrication, mounting, and assist in LED layout and trouble shooting. Pretty simple design, the LED rope was a pain - but is a pretty big statement piece for our brochure. Some of the inside the field work is much more impressive fabrication wise...but probably wont get put on the news We didnt do the video board, but i suspect the company that did lost money on the contract
  9. Sports

i am a south side White Sox fan - but this is sort of a big deal on the north side - Judge Ruling on Rooftops For anyone who doesnt follow Cubs baseball Wrigley field started a monster renovation of the bleacher area starting the day after their season ended in September. They have essentially torn down the entire bleacher area and are renovating it, adding a concourse, renovating suite areas, etc. The place is a dump and needed it - but the major fight are the video boards Across from the right field are some 3-4 story buildings that were at one time homes occupied by neighborhood people - they'd go up on their roofs and watch the game for free. Now they've evolved into holding companies that utilize the roof for their own ticket sales. They sell all you can eat/drink tickets with huge bleachers on the roofs to watch (from afar) the game from the outfield. The seats arent great, but the prices are better VS admission + food/drink Anyways, they are putting in two huge video boards in the outfield - 42' x 92'. Right now only the left field board is up, and the other will be installed throughout away stints (finishing around july). The right field had to wait for this ruling to ensure that it wouldnt get overturned & be a lost purchase. I do a lot of work for wrigley so i have all the drawings and this board will totally wipe out 4 - 5 of the rooftop place's views...severely reduce another handful's. And the best part is that on top of both of these are going 10' illuminated "Wintrust" and "Butweiser" signs So not only did Wrigley finally update and get video boards ~30yrs late - they also have thrown off all the leeching remoras across the street. They'll still suck this season, but it has been pretty lucrative for my company
  10. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

After finishing The Martian I was having a conversation with a friend about the main character's circumstances and available entertainment. TLDR - he gets stuck on Mars - but due to circumstances he has laptops that are loaded with crew member's allocated personal media / entertainment materials. One person had hundreds of hours of disco, someone else several full runs of 70's TV shows, another had thousands of eBooks, etc. This material is supposed to last the months getting to Mars, on planet, and trip home. Of course the conversation devolved to what game could you play the longest/infinitely (if got stranded there) After careful thought I think I would ask for Binding of Issac RE, Starcraft2, and Diablo (barring of course all online requirements etc) I was trying to cross genres while still having an opportunity for endless content with different win conditions the create variety. Dota2 would substitute my RTS selection - but an 36 minute lag and contact with Earth would break the exercise
  11. The terrible wallet scourge of the Amiibo.

interesting I shop at target every friday for groceries and frequently look our (my store's) abysmal Amiibo selection - and have hardly seen any new SKU's in months. Either our store doesn't change their stock or the product movement is poor. I'd love a Jigglypuff - but i'd have to hide it under the bread so my wife doesnt know im buying another stupid toy I think I last tried this trick when I was 8
  12. Backlog Busters

Welp, may want to get other games in the list done first. i'll take my next thought to a more related thread
  13. Non-video games

Ty for the info, i hesitated last fall when they came back @ $40. I am truly interested in playing - and the price gouging on amazon is incredible
  14. Backlog Busters

is the plan with isaac to just beat "mom" or platinum god. i dont want to get into a monster conversation with what constitutes "beating" a game, just curious about your metric isaac is my #2 time sink, i go from dota to isaac to diablo...and never make progress in anything else i didnt stop playing isaac WoL till i platinumed...and i presume i wont stop Rebirth till i 100% it as well. if i was good, it'd be done already
  15. Meow.

    seems very pleased with himself
  16. Meow.

It is getting warmer outside during the day - but at night i still need to fight for bed space with the cats. Luna (pictured) likes to sleep between my legs, Maya will huddle at my torso...and frequently i wake up eye to eye with Lily at the head. They leave my wife alone because she gets up 4-5x a night and turns a lot whereas I am generally stationary.
  17. The Martian by Andy Weir - MacGuyver is a Cast Away, in space!

Glad to find someone else had started a post, my introspection on the book isnt nearly as articulate. However, i certainly second this recommendation - interesting story in a semi plausible scenario that could be reality in our lifetimes. i got the audio book free from audible, This was my first longer audio book and found it to be very enjoyable. The reader (as i presume is with most audible readers) kept a great pace, edited clearly, and only some minorly annoying voices - i get it, but dont need to do an indian accent for the director. It runs for nearly 11hrs and i couldnt turn it off (started yesterday afternoon)
  18. Skulls of the shogun could be a good candidate, the turns are quick but still offer the asynchronous option Battle world kronos was supposed to get this ability (if not already included). I barely played out of the kick starter early access, but would be interested
  19. Life

I had previously never heard of this, and have been off/on reading various hexagram interpretations all day, learning how the different --- vs - - combinations come together to form symbols etc. It is swell, and as you note - all interpretations are obscure and generate thought for self reflection action. I think by just focusing on the coin tossing, drawing hexagram, and reading interpretation it focuses a person's mind to reflect on the question/problem at hand - the hex its irrelevant if you were able to think critically for a few minutes and find your own answer/guidance. My immediate comparison is to astrology that tends to provide definitive guidance (do something now, do not do something, engage in holding pattern) from a totally obscure outside source (the stars). I've always thought it silly and pandering to folk who need an easy answer (or whatever reassurance zodiacs provide to the users)
  20. Alien Vs. Predator Classic (2000)

AVP comes out at lan parties for some classic DM Storage battles As to the Alien campaign there has to be a vent missing, or a way to power them down. Most levels have a way to win without being seen I remember marine being the hardest because i am a FPS video game baby and cannot kill the Aliens well. Predator view modes made that one easier - and Alien crouch-edge jump makes for aerial nonsense Absolutely will play online Thumbs MP in Storage, even 1v1 (no pred) is good time
  21. Dota Today 17: Aui_2000

i am glad Dota Today got a release with that sweet sweet opening The content was a brief insight to a player who i suspect does not take a lot of interviews - or maybe not interviews with the kinds of insightful questions being asked. The usual esport interview may more closely inspect match specific situations and events (ex: why did you prioritize your Q over E and X item over Y in this ABC team comp) Additionally - based on the flow of conversation could it be the skype delay caused some interruption/cut-in issue. Coupled with his clear multi-tasking (presumably match prep) & personality the natural pauses and cadence of speech the interruption was exasperated

Mayo consumption should be limited to accidental inclusion on meals & utilized as a vehicle to superior sauces. I have similar feelings about Ranch & Sour Cream. One of my favorite spicier concoctions - 1/4c mayo, 2T siracaha, splash pickle juice. utilize liberally
  23. Life

my wife and i put up a mock movie poster baby announcement today to our respective social media accounts. its pretty nice seeing how many people "like" or comment, but certainly highlights the real dolts that are allowed to post to the world. <15yrs ago their opinions would have been confined to bars and their likely dolt-y peers fortunately there is "delete post" control
  24. Intoxicated:

i had my first Tanqueray (rocks, f tonic) in a long time this past weekend. I still have no interest in keeping hard alcohol in the house, but was a delightful treat
  25. Life

we live in a town house and still have to deal with neighbor noise. I suspect they have their sound system against our opposite couch wall and there is a deep thundering bass that comes through. Happens a lot during the week and weekends around 9pm i dont even know what they are watching, sounds like Transformers. My wife is going to write a letter, or start banging on the wall like a crazy...TBD
