  1. Where in the World - Idle Thumbs Map

oddly it does. but when i pulled the zip-code off one of you's entries it moved the pin a few miles into town...Thanks Bing msg me proper zip code, i figured you were just at Illinois State University all fixed
  2. Lego is Still Cool

while playing Crossy Road this came up as an yesterday Lego Fusion I particularly really like the logo design, but suppose the concept is also pretty neat. It reads to me like an appeal to people/kids who like the video game Lego world more than the real-life model building. Although the idea of buying a specific model kit & only getting to make a 2-D building profile to import seems kinda lame. Maybe if they sold kits that gave an idea...or add your own bricks within a certain height/width parameter/template to really customize it. Or make a full custom 3D model and take pictures from all angles and let the software digitize and rebuild inside the virtual world with blocks would be pretty slick. One day...and if any company would figure it out - would certainly be Lego
  3. Where in the World - Idle Thumbs Map

i just tweaked some of the "error" pins, specifically the El Paso = LA post, silly Bing Using the webform it keeps the spreadsheet safe from being mucked up and also hides any user submitted info (just comes up as "web user"), but if someone really wanted an entry changed just drop me a note
  4. I Had A Random Thought...

oh, i will adjust the mandatory part of that. i figured postal codes was going to be pretty universal way of tracking people w/o actual locations **All fixed, no more Beverly Hills for you

  7. General Video Game Deals Thread

I've a 10yr badge from November 2004 which should be right around Half-Life 2, I remember initially be very anti-steam based on the UI and DRM, but physical media and key-codes. Second purchase was Torchlight, seems to be a common theme there...but also means at least a 4yr gap in its usage
  8. Diablo III

*All my input is PC related* But on a new character you are able to jump to at least torment 4 from the start. And there is a hint that sometimes comes up in the load screens saying to enable "Elective" mode I dont know what you mean by progression is slow in adventure mode? (to anyone who hasnt played since RoS) The loop in adventure is to do bounties (specifically x2 blood shards & Act 1 for a RRoG) and maybe get some drops while playing...but also get the Tyreal bounty chest that usually contains a legendary. More importantly you'll get rift shards which go to the semi-endless portals where you have extremely dense levels to fight through and after enough enemies cut down you summon a named portal boss. This boss then usually drops some good loot and a chance for Greater Rift Shards which enable a timed semi-endless portal (these are different difficulties independent of your Torment difficulty). Same gist, push through and kill the named guy - who drops legendary gems & gives option to upgrade said gems or up your portal difficulty Personally I think Adventure Mode is great, when i first quit D3 the only option for getting great loot was to start a specific quest, get 5 stacks of Nephalm bonus, and go fight a named guy (eg Butcher runs). Now in RoS I can start do an Act worth of bounties pretty quick or go wild in the rifts. Coupled with Loot 2.0, enchanting, and Blood-Shard gambling I have been able to gear up my main with much better success than ever (barring Auction House use) Starting new toons is also nice in Adventure mode since you can immediately start in Rifts and gain several per run. I have always found the most enjoyment from Diablo in the loot grind and increase of difficulty...not the leveling. Making the jump from Torment X to Y and facing familiar-yet much more difficult-enemies is really satisfying. As to the console version, there are some differences in the way loot drops, some of the stats, and enemy density that is tuned for the controller experience. I have a co-worker that is many-many hours in (like upper 900 paragon) and the damage output he is doing simply dwarfs even the highest PC leader boards. There is also some hacking that happens on console where people get equivalent of D2 white armor and are able to artificially gear others & pass insane GRIFTS
  9. Year of the PSThrees is exciting and all, but did you also know it is the year of the Fireflower according to Nintendo? Even comes with a neat print-out calendar I look forward to finding 8-bit fireflowers drawn up or hidden inside games released this year
  10. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Surely GTA and its styling has been beaten up by now but watching that video and comments about cynicism were very accurate I finished GTA5 - but not to 100% like i thought it would grab me. I did main story and most of the secondary activities, but it felt a lot like a chore and didnt respect my time. I presume from praise for the series this was not always the case I fall into a limited pocket of people who had never played a GTA game before - but did finish Saints Row 3 feeling great on the open world shoot-em up style. Your description of "wallows in its misery" to be right on, everyone just seemed to be yelling at me the whole time; I have no intention going back into that world in another release of the series if the characters are the same, or would i ever think to do "chore" work in the online setting. You have to imagine that they've got another one of these games in the works. The revenue was just too great to try something completely different, it could be a few years out - maybe the tone will be better by then
  11. Non-video games

thank you for the info! I have to correct my initial post, the box set must have been a second edition because it has the river tiles included. I'll check in at my local game store next time out on that side of town for those expansions And looking through humble-mobile bundles I found the Android Carcassone app. I will take a look and see if i can get the dlc w/builders & inns for a trial run. great idea!
  12. Non-video games

over the break i found an unopened Carcassone box (base model) in my closet. I think I've had this for 12yrs unopened - the box art apparently did not appeal to my 18yr old self Anyways, it is a great time! My wife who is normally very hesitant to new games or styles of play has totally fallen in love. The design is a simple tile game and score points by arranging tiles in a way to complete roads/cities, but the big points come from the open "fields" where you can score farmers that connect their fields to other completed cities. Does anyone have experience with the expansions? A quick look on boardgamegeek.com showed mediocre reviews on all expansions...and there are a lot of them. It reads to me that they got a good initial theme/concept and have over the years kept going to the same well for another expansion
  13. Nuclear Throne: Oh! I accidentally ate my gun.

i saw this announcement, and like bjorn almost bought in to get a 2x copy during the sale. but the last thing i need to do is buy another nearly endless game. that being said - i'd also love a copy! but will not likely use it in the very-near future
  14. our company uses an online spreadsheet portal called Smartsheets.com, its a super glorified excel/google sheets that can be shared, integrated into our other web tools, and generally works really well except that it has been down today, last tuesday, and some additional downtime the week of Dec 22 This is more of a whine/complaint since we keep our survey & request information on there for my art books that are due. And clients will not care that our 3rd party organization software is down/doing maintenance Additionally at times like this certainly pokes holes in the "cloud" mantra that has been toted by companies the last few years.
  15. Life

i ice-skated my first car when I was 17 into a tree. I wasn't going more than 10-15 because of the fresh ice and upcoming turn in my neighborhood...then just started sliding. It was an old buick with the impossible to use in an emergency E-Brake, i had enough time to pump regular brakes, use said E-brake and to tell my brother we werent going to stop. A couple hundred dollars at local junk yard and a lot of evenings in the garage i fixed it myself, but what a mess Currently though I got a new car over the summer and am fairly worried of the got-to-come-eventually Chicago snowstorm. My old vehicle had sport tires, excessive power, and a generally smaller/lighter car - but my current vehicle is more sedan-y, heavier, and sometimes feels like it cant get out of its way. Based on its performance in heavy rain i think i'm going to miss the smaller vehicle and agility
  16. The terrible wallet scourge of the Amiibo.

my mario is at ~35 just by playing handful of 2v6(lvl6 comps) matches - at mid 30's he started being able to help me clean the board. At lvl50 and feeding him some equipment i think we'll be able to 2v8 (lvl9) i cant say that he is learning anything from me though, i play a Jet-Hammer King D3 - this mario ai keeps jumping around and "dodging"
  17. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

We decided to open gifts early in celebration of an extra long weekend (and if my wife didn't like any thing I have tomorrow still to return/try again) Anyways, Commander Toad is great! The first 10 levels I've played are diverse, interesting, and fill that itch of an easy-but-fun puzzle game. I am going to need to pace myself though, I imagine once on a roll could easily blow through all the levels in a weekend It would have been nice if you could play as toadette from the start and just swap which androgynous mushroom person was captured
  18. The terrible wallet scourge of the Amiibo.

She wanted toon link but since not released chose Mario. Then I had the mildly difficult task of explaining what it did.
  19. The terrible wallet scourge of the Amiibo.

i have yet to get any Amiibos...my spouse and i have a moratorium on buying stuff through the holidays but i know there is one wrapped under the tree (RE: Ugly boxes) - i put it in my amazon wish list as a "buyer's choice" for which character to pick up. I am fairly interested to see which she got thinking i would like it. She is a non-gamer who only watches me playing in between website or pinterest loads. I doubt she recognizes my desire to have a Samus or Cpt Falcon helmet in mario kart, rarity of the villager/little mac, or tactical advantage of a Fox character on my team in sm4sh
  20. Life

i feel extremely lucky most days when i think about the conditions that I met my wife. My co-worker left for her honeymoon and i took over some her accounts (project management & customer service work) for the week. By chance my SO wrote in looking for something to be fabricated, I happened to take the order and struck up a conversation for no good reason. By the end of the week we were meeting for drinks & year and half later living together. But had I not taken that order I am positive i'd still be working too much, meeting no one special in bars, and adding other BS profile pull-quotes to this thread I am mysterious, but also an open book
  21. Recently completed video games

i finally got around to finishing Wind Waker HD It was a slow burn play through trying to figure out all the treasure hints - which included me making my own spread sheet with annotations, hints, etc. i did look up the "fast sail" addition to the HD version and that made all the difference. Being that most of the game is water...and traveling said water it baffles me that the first game only had the one sail - and had to change the wind direction each time got going. Overall it is a spectacular update to a great game. The second screen while sailing is amazing, minor interface improvements are extremely helpful, and the cartoon style looks the same but sharper in the complaint department - the game pad control layout makes aiming difficult (didnt even bother with the gyro aiming), some of the treasure maps (Platform, hearts, etc) dont update when cleared so getting them so late and finding out there are 9x hearts on windfall...after getting 3 - 5? was disheartening. if it updated i would go back for a full clear 20 containers I cannot completely articulate my last thoughts, but playing this again after the existence of Bioshock Infinite gave me pause that they could just as easily make a Zelda in any setting (and already have - basic Hyrule, dark world, water world, air world, time travel). I'm looking forward to 1920's New England Link saving some one from Cthulhudorf *edit - oh that was close, i did not want this sludge as a new page post

  23. Life

i love my work too, i wouldnt even leave it to go be an engineer, it would just help/solve some problems we have at my office. maybe i can just get an abridged set of courses. like class developing foundations for structures in C class wind loads and figuring section modulus for cantilevered elements - a certificate would be cause for a raise too after this beer wears off maybe ill go looking again
  24. Life

i spent the first hour or so at work today researching online programs to get a degree in civil engineering w/structural focus. then i stopped when did the calculations on tuition, credit hours/semesters & the return on investment There is a 33% increase of time vs full time student, the median income isnt too far off my current wage, and tuition is very cost prohibitive with house, cars, general life in the way the only way this would work is if i could get my job to pay for it which is an extreme long shot. be nice if i was 19 again. oh well
  25. Idle Food - Cooking!

Additional cooking post! Chorizo with onions and enchilada sauce, fried egg & cilantro served on a tostada with chihuahua cheese...and valentina came out great, tasted great, tostadas are f'ing useless. this particular image is overloaded which made it even worse to eat
