  1. So, I'm really wary about the story, but I've got the itch for some Deus Ex, so I went in on this.  It's weird, and I'm liking the gameplay for what it is, but, man, this story.

The thing that kinda typifies for me what seems up with this game in story terms comes pretty early in, at the train station:

So, after the train station gets blown up, you have that moment of Jensen hearing the kid calling for his mom, and you start to dig her out of the rubble and she grabs your hand and then goes limp.  And Jensen just stares for a second with sad face before he activates his sunglasses.

That is so silly and video game-y that I just couldn't stop laughing at something that clearly was meant to play as like sour-note badass.

So, on that front, you can absolutely do that.

Your actual mission there is to get to the helicopter and stop it from taking off.  I jumped down the elevator shaft, rolled out to the right, jumped down and used Icarus Strike to knock out the guy at the bottom, go up along the left, use the glass aug to stealth past the guys running towards you, stay hidden along the left side behind obstacles, and then you get to a point from there that there's only one guy between you and the helicopter.  Sneak up on and do a non-lethal takedown and you can walk up to the chopper and rip the battery out of it.

I had to play it a bunch to get that route down, but it's totally there.  I thought this was supposed to be a moment like with your helicopter pilot in DX:HR where you either had to stealth to sneak away and ler her die or go in heavy to kill all the bad guys and save her, so I tried disabling as many guys using non-lethal tactics as possible, but he just kept dying.  Turns out, all you need to do is be quick about disabling the chopper.

    On the tutorial mission

Good to know. I suppose that makes sense. I was trying to methodically work my way around the room, knocking out each guy with tranquilizers or takedowns, and by the time I made the smallest bit of progress, the guy I was supposed to save would die. I guess quick stealth makes sense, but I was, like Nappi, out of energy at that point from playing with all of my augs earlier in the tutorial. Oh well.

Overall, though, I am starting to come around on the game. The story stuff is still not great, but once you get into the city and can wander around, it feels more like what I want out of a Deus Ex game. Lots of hacking, sneaking, breaking into places and finding secrets off the beaten path. And it's not like the originals had great stories, writing, or voice acting. "I spill my drink!" and all that.

  2. So I picked this up because the original is one of my favorite games. I know it isn't perfect and that its story is super goofy (though 13 year old me thought it was so, so good). HR felt similar, if a bit more grimdark. I enjoyed it for a lot of the reasons I like the original, even if it feels like a cover version of a song I love.

This new one though, I'm not feeling it so far. The trailer issues and its apolitical politics are rubbing me the wrong way really badly in the first post-credits area, and the "mechanical apartheid" stuff is just cringe-worthy.

On top of that, it drops you into the game after the credits in a City 17-esque train station and has you meet up with a woman named Alex.

I'm also not sure how I feel about the set-piece battle before the credits start where the gold masks show up and you have to protect the undercover agent. It seems nearly impossible to keep him alive and do a non-lethal playthrough. I'm still not sure if that's an interesting trade off (sure you can do a pacifist run, but people will die as a result) or a bit of a slap in the face to players who want to minimize their own use of violence.

  3. I've only done two murderous rampages. Proper kills aren't very easy in this one.

I found it tough be sneaky for the secondary target, but with the right disguise you can get really close to the primary target pretty easily.

My favorite method so far is to follow the defective microphone opportunity. If you do, you'll wind up in a suite with both the deadly mic and a passed out crew member who you can take some clothes from. With that outfit, you can walk right up to the recording studio (you won't even get frisked!).

  4. If it makes you feel any better, I was pretty underwhelmed by the bonus missions.

Same. The Sapeinza bonus mission was kind of neat, but I didn't feel the need to replay it like I have with all the main missions. I also didn't ever get around to finishing the Marakesh bonus mission at all because it didn't seem very interesting.

  5. Meh, still feeling disappointed and a bit robbed about the bonus missions. Don't think I'll be buying anymore, but strangely also don't want to have them spoiled in case a sale comes up or something, so I guess it'll be the end of me watching the coverage too.

Yeah, the bonus mission stuff, and the fact that there's no easy upgrade path for someone who bought the starter pack and an episode and wants to get everything, is not great. I usually avoid season passes, but I didn't in this case. I bought in after hearing the Thumbs talk about Sapienza. I figured that if the first two levels were as good as they said, the season pass would probably be worth it. I haven't regretted it yet, but that doesn't help anyone who tried to buy it episode by episode.

  6. I've been looking for a game that I can just turn on and veg out to. When I get home from work, I just want to immerse myself in something that's not stressful, and fun. Looks like it's exactly whatI want.

If that's what you're looking for, I think you'd probably really enjoy it. The tutorial can be a bit of a slog, but after that, it become a perfect game to just relax and wander around in. I'm really enjoying setting short term goals for myself, like repairing a neat looking ship.

  7. I was thinking of waiting for a few reviews before I picked up NMS, but...do I really care what some random dude on the internet thinks? Might as well just buy it and play it. I have the money right now.

I think reactions to it are really going to be determined by what they want out if it. If you want a game that is repetitive in a relaxing way that lets you fly around different planets looking at stuff, you'll love it. If you want deep combat/survival/story content, you'll feel a bit let down.

I have to say that I am loving the language system so far. I'm getting close to understanding the aliens in my starting area at least a little and I feel weirdly proud of that.

  8. I'm kind of glad that the PC version is delayed. It makes it easier to not pre-order and just wait to hear how people like it. If it sounds good, I'll pick it up on Friday. If not, I'll hold off. Delays make it easier to suppress hype.

  9. Maybe it's just that this is the first adventure I've been listening to as it comes out, but this season of The Adventure Zone has been pretty damn awesome.

I've really been enjoying it. With every arc of The Adventure Zone getting stronger, I've been wondering if we might see Griffin take a shot at game design/writing.

  10. As with 30 Flights of Loving and Gravity Bone, some of the background details are my favorite parts of this game so far, like this book:

It is now my goal in life to write something that causes someone to describe me as an "explosion of a human being who will stop at nothing to shock and titillate you."

  11. I finished the Busey mission and the bonus Sapienza mission.

    Busey

I finished it really quickly, which left me feeling a bit disappointed. I started in the safe house and picked up the explosive golf ball out of habit. I was walking around the alleys since that's where he was in the intro video. After a minute, he just walked around the corner. I dropped the golf ball at his feet. It blew up and I casually walked away in the confusion. I feel like I probably missed some dialog (I didn't even see Cole at all), but I couldn't really pass up that chance.

    Bonus Mission (Sapienza Movie Set)

I really liked this mission. While I know the space really well after getting to mastery 20 in the main mission, the movie set really changed things to the point where it felt like a whole new level. I ended up pursuing one opportunity (changing the robot's grip strength) and then dropping it when a cooler one presented itself (the pyrotechnics). I had a hard time getting a SFX crew disguise, but once I did, it was pretty easy to set it up. I'll have to go back and explore the other options. I like the idea of having a bulletproof target since sniping would sort of make the level trivial.

  12. Act IV is out, apparently.

I really wish I remembered more about the first three acts. I'm torn between installing it and playing right away or waiting and plaything through I-IV so I have a better sense of what's going on.

  13. The next elusive target will be one of a pair of twins. You need to kill one and not even touch the other. Sounds fun, but really hard.

I just finished it in the least interesting way possible.

I found them down by the docks, walked right up to them and figured out which one was wearing the watch. When they walked close enough to the speedboat exit, I just pulled out my silverballer, took out the watch wearing guy and booked it for the exit.

  14. Congrats!  Logarius was one of the bosses I had to throw myself at a whole bunch before I really started getting a pattern and strategy down for him.  Definitely one of the harder bosses.

Thanks! I just finished the game (I missed some umbilical cords, so bad endings for me) and all things considered, I think that's my least favorite boss fight. I can't put my finger on it, but something about it just made it feel way less manageable than the rest.

  15. Thanks for the advice. I actually have tried summoning, but I never seem to get a response. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever been able to summon anyone other than an NPC successfully. Is there any NPC for Logarius that I'm missing?

EDIT: And I just tried it again solo and made it through. I had been using a Kirkhammer, but I tried using a Tonitrus and that made all the difference apparently.

DOUBLE EDIT: Of course there was no one around to help, but there was someone around to invade me in the next area. Hooray for jolly cooperation.

  16. I bought a PS4 not too long ago (I know, new versions, etc.) and have been getting deep into Bloodborne lately. I've made it pretty far without too much difficulty, but I just can't seem to get past Martyr Logarius. I've mostly given up on it, but as I keep going, leveling up and beating more bosses, I keep going back and trying to take him down, but I never seem to make any progress. That guy is just the worst. Any advice?

  17. My group of friends who don't play games (or more accurately only a couple of them do regularly) are all in on this thing. They basically spent all weekend scouting out the city for the best places for catching em all. Basically, it confirms Austin Walker's take on the whole thing, that the game isn't particularly good, but it doesn't really matter.

  18. I started playing Blood and Wine a few days ago and I found it really difficult, mostly because it's been such a long time since I've played the game. It throws you into fighting a few boss monsters right away, one of which is basically immune to my basic Witcher fighting strategy (use the Quen shield to tank damage, use the alternate shield to heal when that fails) so I'm a bit stuck. That isn't really the game's problems, but it is a problem with putting out a big piece of content that assumes the player still remembers how to play it after a while away.

  19. Lazer Ted is hilarious. Austin does an amazing Riff Raff.

I was going to make note of all of Lazer Ted's jobs so I could add them to the COUNTER/weight wiki. Then I forgot about it.
