  1. Books, books, books...

Bleak House and Our Mutual Friend are my favorite Dickens, and Our Mutual Friend might actually be a good starting point for Dickens.
  2. anime

Let's all have an Evangelion love-in

  4. Life

I think you meant to say that it's like a hot dog without a bun
  5. Life

I am the pistachio ice cream of people. people bicker over chocolate vs vanilla, but only because everyone knows who the true champion is. also I'm green
  6. Life

It was serious! I had a rough couple of days, but now I'm getting better. I'm still in a psych ward and they're futzing with my medications, so things are still a little hazy and unclear, but I hope to be out by Wednesday and back to y'all on Slack and stuff!
  7. Life

Over the last few days, I've found that an easy way to relax and get away from work for a while is to check yourself into a psych ward. It's not a method I would recommend unless you need it, though.
  8. Life

Absolutely. These are people who recognize that there is a problem and accept that they're being offered a tool to correct it, but choose to hope for things just being better than they are rather than adopting a proactive stance.

I'm running into a problem at work that I didn't expect to. I was expecting pushback on the educational piece that goes with my project -- materials and an optional training session for clinics on how to improve interactions with trans patient populations -- but it's not taking the form that I expected. I'm hitting a wall where heads of clinics are saying, "I don't understand why we need this training. It seems like basic empathy. People should have basic empathy. We don't want to participate in this." I can't quite figure out how to respond to this reaction because it's true. People should just have basic empathy and know these things, but the demonstrable, data driven fact of the matter is that they don't. This doesn't seem to change people's minds though -- they just keep reiterating that tho ha should be better while refusing the viability of tools to actually make it better. It's very frustrating.

I like to revisit Owen Pallett in times when I'm feeling contemplative. He's a very smart musician, both as a lyricist and a composer.

I wrote an e-mail to my boss that said I needed lean training because it "will help us identify inefficiencies in our process, allowing us to thereby identify growth opportunities for reduction in any waste of human capital in our process." I am the worst. Just the hottest garbage fire in the universe. But that led to a conversation with my boss about where I would like to end up in the future, institutionally, in a very concrete, material way. We're going through a lot of organizational changes right now -- I work in healthcare quality, and the new director of the hospital is pushing for massive growth in our quality infrastructure -- and I was asked where I'd like to end up, in the short term. I have to have an answer by Monday, so that she can make a recommendation for me. I'm going to have a very rough weekend of weighing different possibilities.
  12. wrong thread

Is this the thread for corrections or am I in the wrong thread?
  13. Powerball Fantasies

Sorry, I'm not prepared to provide an exhaustive list. I'd start with the cute Chrises and go down the line from there.
  14. wrong thread

Is this the right thread for this? Wrong thread.
  15. Other podcasts

Do we need to start a wrong thread thread? I like some of Girl on Guy, Aisha Tyler's podcast, but the funnier/better episodes are the ones where she doesn't have a comedian on.
  16. Powerball Fantasies

How much do you think a hug from a cute dude celebrity costs? How money would I be able to afford?
  17. Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready

One of my favorite savory pancakes is pajeon, Korean green onion pancake, which I usually make an embarrassing amount of during the summer. http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/pajeon Maybe I'll finally take this opportunity to try out soegogi-jeon. Does this count as a "pancake" though, really? http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/soegogi-jeon
  18. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

That just makes me even more upset that I may never have seen a T-Rex butthole in a Jurassic Park movie. What is the world coming to?
  19. RIP David Bowie

I should be able to say something about how much he meant to me. I should want to talk about how him living as himself helped me to live as myself. I should talk about how much it meant having that kind of queer superstar in the world, about how powerful it was to have someone out there just being themselves, refusing to be pinned down as any one thing — no one gender, no one sexuality, no one career, no one identity. I should be able to talk about how it meant so much to see that you could be the kind of person that David Bowie was and still be loved. I can’t talk about any of that right now. I can only listen to what he left us. David Bowie was one of my heroes. He will be missed.
  20. Movie/TV recommendations

Every time I watch Eyes Wide Shut, I'm baffled by why people seem to hate it as much as they do. It's such a good movie! Kubrick thought it was his best. I might agree.
  21. AGDQ 2016

I only got that feeling from one run that had a dev on the couch who was pushing, "Hey, it's on Steam! Hey, be here after the run for some swag! Please get this game!" Don't remember what game it was. It was on last night as I was getting ready for bed, so I didn't watch very much of it.
  22. AGDQ 2016

I'm okay with the use of casual in the way that a lot of people use it. I don't hear it used as a pejorative very often, and I don't like it when I do, but most speedrunners I hear use it just to mean the people who just play a game. I think it's a nice way to kind of reclaim the pejorative sense of "casual gamer," but I can see how that's a very generous interpretation of the use case.
  23. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Moby Dick, in the original text, is a fairly non-linear treatise on the fact that nature is an unknowable thing.
  24. Idle Santa 2015 - Giftees sent out! Get gifting!

I'm glad you like it! I wasn't sure you would! It has a thing on the back so you can hang it with, like, a picture hanger if you want. One day I will tell you of the battle between me and and the robot, but for now the trauma is just too fresh in my mind. Also please disregard the crumpled up papers from around my cubicle. I couldn't find the bubble wrap.
  25. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I made my first 2016 playlist tonight, so here are three songs I didn't pay enough attention to in 2015. This year I'll do better!
