I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)
Mangela Lansbury replied to tegan's topic in Video Gaming
I've started playing Go against a computer during my work day. I can usually get through one game in my downtime -- keep the board over in a corner of my screen and mull over moves through the day, clicking over to it while I can. I was doing this today when I had a bit of a weird thought. Does playing Go on a computer against a computer count as playing a video game? I kind of want to say yes, but a part of me also wants to say no. -
And according to people at the arraignment, Department of Homeland Security officials practically outnumbered lawyers in the courtroom. This is exactly what we need DHS doing -- needlessly pushing marginalized people further into the margins of society. Thanks for protecting me from people who are just trying to make a living, federal law enforcement alphabet soup!

I would make one, but Binders Full of Republicans is the best thread name I can come up with so I won't! I only pay attention to Fox News when I'm home for holidays and it's on 24/7, so I didn't know Donald Trump and Fox News had a history! I just know that Ailes basically bent over backwards after the debate to not support Megyn Kelly, so this is a refreshing change of heart.

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/aug/25/fox-chief-donald-trump-verbal-assaults-megyn-kelly I don't entirely know how to think of this (or if this even belongs here!), but it's nice that Roger Ailes is standing behind Megyn Kelly and at least saying that doing things like calling her a Bilbo are crude and irresponsible. Edit: My autocorrect reveals far too much about me sometimes. Calling her a bimbo. She might like to be a Bilbo, I don't know how she feels about the Baggins family!

The thing about Vox Day is that anything would be a win for him -- and considering he's basically the leader, that means there's basically no way for the various Puppy movements to lose. As long as they have an impact and people pay attention to their tantrum, they come out on top. And if people don't pay attention to them, it's proof to them that the conspiracy they've imagined is real and they need to keep fighting it. That's one of the most distressing things about this kind of movement -- GamerGate or the Sad/Rabid Puppies. You can't acknowledge them and you can't ignore them. Both reinforce to them that they're doing the right thing.

Is PieLieDie the only one on that team who's never been accused of cheating? -
A billboard fell in the suburb I grew up in and it made it on the 24 hour news cycle (slow news day combined with the proximity to CNN HQ, I guess). It was a bigger deal locally that we got national attention than that someone died. It's not a unique phenomenon, but I don't understand it...

That's not A+, it's just sad.

America is a nation where the FBI radicalizes Muslims and then punishes them for having been radicalized. I treat all police departments like they're willing to do the shadiest things, and operate on that assumption until proven otherwise. It's just true too often.
-
There was one person who died, an 18 year old who was shot in the back. The other person with him escaped the attackers. Thanks to the odd requirements of police reporting, the official police report lists the dead man as Suspect and his murderer as Victim.

I enjoy working out and wish I had more time to do it

There are countless examples of white musicians covering songs performed by black musicians, in at least a rock context. Even in the context of Jazz, there are countless examples of black musicians suffering where white musicians are romanticized for their drug use. I don't understand how someone familiar with the history of either, in the context of race, could argue either are race blind.

I've made a post about rock and roll and race on here before. I'm on my phone, so I can't find it and link it.

To be fair, I watched it a long time ago, and I don't remember the details of many things I watched/read/played during that period! I've been thinking of getting back into Gundam, so maybe I'll start with Gundam 0080 and go from there.

i have seen gundam 0080 i do not remember a damn thing about gundam 0080

"I don't think that was as clever as you think."

I started my new position at my new pay rate today, hooray! I'm making more money than I ever have (or thought I would be in the near future!) now, so I'm excited by the idea of having a savings account that actually grows. But also the guy I've been seeing for about 6 months suddenly broke things off on Saturday for nebulous reasons (but we can still be friends and still have sex and nothing has to change, I just don't want commitment! ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh vom barf ugh). And I got a call this morning that an old friend of mine down south finally lost her battle with cancer -- not an unexpected call, but still a hard one. So things are good in some ways and bad in others! Life is a complicated thing and I am feeling pretty down about myself, but good about my situation. Trying to focus on and appreciate what I have but man is that hard to do sometimes.

Duke's rules over the mayonnaise duchy. I will fight you on this.

This quote was probably in response to criticism that's appeared of Franzen's novel that's to be released on September 1. It seems to star some kind of bizarre stereotype of a millennial feminist, who happens to fit the stereotypes that an aging white man might have regarding a millennial feminist, and who goes through Franzen's typical disaster porn wringer. Just a guess though, I don't really pay enough attention to Anne Rice to know if she gives a hoot about Franzen.

It's not a matter of outlets, but specific people. Wesley Lowery with the Washington Post has done a great job covering the story, but he's also become a part of it now that he's facing charges related to his abuse at the hands of police last year. Following #BlackLivesMatter leaders on Twitter is incredibly helpful -- Netta, DeRay, and Cornell are people to follow off the top of my head, but there are definitely others whose names I just can't remember offhand. Writers like Heet Jeer and Ta-Nehisi Coates are great. There used to be a newsletter I got called This Is The Movement, but I don't remember when I last hit one. I'll see if I can find a good replacement.

Did anything ever happen with that Artosis/Tasteless documentary?

I am white now, but my ethnicity was not considered white before -- and some still don't consider me white. The fun of being Jewish by birth. I also speak as a gay man who is very aware of the way that gay culture appropriates the culture of black people (black women in particular) and does his best to keep those around him from doing that. I also don't think you have to have any specific credentials, by birth or otherwise, to talk about appropriation. It's a widely discussed phenomenon.

It's hard and uncomfortable to think about the fact that we all grew up in a racist and sexist and homophobic society and, no matter how hard we try, we're going to fuck up every now and then. That basically has to be okay, to a point. Everyone is going to be a bad actor at some point (especially Nicholas Cage), but that doesn't necessarily make them (or you!) a bad person.

White people with "locked" hair often just have dirty hair because that's the way their hair works. Because of this, black people with locked hair are looked down on because their hair is seen as dirty when it isn't because that's just how their hair works. This leads to a bad perception of a natural black hairstyle, and can prevent them from being seen as professional thereby limiting the opportunities they are provided unless they spend the extra time and money to make their hair fit a white idea of what hair should look like.
