  1. Idle Thumbs 156: The Holo-Violator

One last thing about FRACT - the 'Hand' thing is the central hub of the game. They are the three pillars of color that you activate at the very begging/tutorial. Also, I found that there are little posts/sticks that seem to indicate where to go. I've been following them and they've taken me to the next puzzle pretty quickly. Admittingly, I haven't played much, so it's still early days.
  2. A couple of nights ago, I purchased Tales of Xillia. On loading it up, I was saddened by the fact that there was no option to choose Japanese voices. After the opening cut scene, me and my girlfriend were openly moaning and complaining about the English dub. After 10 minuets or so of play, how we despaired at the battle animation depicting the main heroine, Maxwell, shouting passionately in the heat of battle, yet the English audio sounding lifeless and dull, like she was bored of it all. This was enough for me to turn it off. At least for that day. But it got me thinking. Why am I so annoyed that I can't listen to it in Japanese? Why do publishers decide to only having English audio? It seems like such a small ask to include Japanese audio, and it feels like arrogance on the developer's side not to include it. But then again, I don't complain when other Japanese games don't have a Japanese audio option. It doesn't bother me in Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil or Bayonetta. I have come to the conclusion that it's because the games mentioned are not so heavily anime influenced like 'Tales of' series and other JRPG's are. Anyways. What are your thoughts? Does it bother you at all? Or am I just a baby weaboo, like the rest of the internet says when people breach this subject? (Incidentally, Tales of Xillia is pretty good, and I got used to the English dub after an hour or 2. It still grates from time to time, but usually only when there's some bit character who's there for 2 or 3 lines)
  3. Dual audio in Games (The Weaboo's Lament)

Weird. I love Baccano! in Japanese more than English. I appreciate that the voice actors would fit better in English, as it's set in the states, but they completely murdered Isaac and Miria. The joy and pizazz that was in the Japanese dub was not there, which ruined the characters, and more importantly, the comedy. I can pick out a couple of Japanese voice actors in anime (albeit only a few), and I'm usually always surprised as to how well their voices fit the character. Admittingly, they usually play the same type of tropes, although sometimes they are chosen just because they are popular, or they are good friends with another VA in the anime, which is annoying. I think the main difference between English and Japanese dubs is that there is a much larger choice of actors, and the casting feels like it's chosen more seriously. Amongst other things.
  4. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

The only thing that'd be worth buying twice would be Mon Hun 3 - once for WiiU and again for 3DS. I was impressed that you can upload clips of your race straight to youtube. I wonder if Nintendo are still going to take ad revenue from that? Or w/e the problem was people had with nintendo at that time. You already own pikmin 3. Play... uhh... sonic? Out of the selection of 10, I don't own 3. Sonic, sonic and mario, and Wii U party. I'm leaning towards WiiU party, or the olympic games one. Any suggestions? Anyone actually played a sonic game in the last 10 years that doesn't suck?

The online is good for a fighting game. I played a couple of matches, and when you start, you get a screen which states the frame delay on each side, and the advised delay it should be. It's a bit of a confusing screen to take in at first, as it can be over quite quickly. The actual fight is pretty lag-free, given the correct frame delay. I played a guy in the states, once with a delay of 2, where it was pretty jumpy at times, and again at 5, where it was actually rather smooth. There was also no dropped matches of the 5-odd i played. Either way I got my ass kicked horrifically online. But at least it wasn't due to lag, so I suppose it's fair. As for MP modes, there's a lobby, where people host... lobbies of up to 8? people, they can fight each other n stuff. There's also a quick match which is supposedly ranked, which is where I got the best connection and the quickest fights. Even though it's ranked, there was no indication as to how. So I don't know how that works, if at all. Finally you can choose where to search for fights due to area, which is nice. I don't really have much to say on it other than it's there and works. You will probably get your ass kicked, but there were times when I nearly made a comeback. It seems the vast majority of people playing are quite good. Either way, if you get the game, add me on steam and i'll play ya.

I'll check when I get home.
  7. I can't answer all of these, but:

It's certainly tounge-in-cheek. I haven't tested the online yet, but I shall tonight and get back to you? I assume there'll be some ranking system like in Tekken. The single player isn't all that long. you could probably blast through a character's story in about half an hour if you play it on easy. In general the fights are enjoyable until the last boss, as previously stated, so I play it on easy to make the last boss less infuriating. A fighting game that has a great story which is really long is also on sale! Blazblue: Calamity Trigger 33% off on steam! DOUBLE RELEVANT. I have a soft spot for the Blazblue series, as it got me into fighting games. The fighting mechanics have similarly been made for beginners in mind, but in a different way. It doesn't have the six-button Street Fighter Low/Medium/High Punch/Kick setup like in skull girls, but instead a 4 button set up of L/M/H and a 'Special' button. This is more enjoyable, as it makes you be able to pull of some awesome moves easily just by pressing the special button, but it doesn't make it too broken. Even the most broken character (Jin and his fucking Ice Car) can be countered easily if you know what you're doing. The button layout also lends itself better to game pads. The tutorial of BB isn't as good as SG, but the story mode of BB is stronger, as each character's story is a visual novel, with choices along the way as well as fights which change the outcome depending on if you win/lose. I even like how the story explains how every character experiences a different story with different outcomes and events, which always kinda bugged me in fighting games. Also some of the comedy endings are great too. TL:DR - get BB if you're more interested in a story, SG if you're more interested in fighting games mechanics.

I love this game. Backed the indiegogo campaign and everything. Somehow I doubt that the devs would just explain the art style away like that, but I'm willing to be proven wrong. Also the previous comment say that her style was overly-sexualised to begin with, so meh? I didn't want to mention the art style though, as it didn't bother me, and wasn't a distraction when it got to the fights. Instead just a thumbs up for the beginner aspect, as it does a really lovely job at introducing not just how to play skull girls, but all fighting games in general. It explains things like pokes, their tactical uses and how you could chain them into combos. It's tutorial mode is very extensive and gets quite complicated, going into move cancelling into specials and the such, which is super useful to know, as it applies to most if not all fighting games, and is something that's usually never explained. Likewise, there's individual character tutorials too. My only beef with the game is the final boss, which is a real bitch because she goes against everything the game teaches you, instead being a fucking tank that you just have to pound and hope she dies before you do. she doesn't flinch, and just sends out ranged attacks which feel unfair and kinda rushed given the rest of the games well thought out and balanced move sets. Also a props to the story which is enjoyable and not silly like some fighting games *cough* tekken *cough*. Each character has their own arc of varying length. Big Band's one is particularly great, but I also loved Pinwheel's too. Finally, it's the only fighting game I know of that's fully independent, which deserves some props I think.
  10. The area past the boss of the Huntsman's Copse has a titanite merchant pretty much as soon as you get into the area.
  11. Cartoons!

Agreed. It looks like an early-era flash video. Still going to give it a go though.
  12. Cartoons!

tbh, I have never heard of it until last week when someone posted about it.
  13. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

    Apparantly so. :/
  14. Dual audio in Games (The Weaboo's Lament)

Yeah, the english was pretty awful in Bravely Default. I changed it ASAP too. I would also agree with you there too. There's also certain character tropes and roles (like moe and tsundere) that never work in english, and just make me cringe when I hear it. Also, English voice actors change all the time. Teddy from persona 4 is totally different from the Teddy in P4A.
  15. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

Do any of you guys love Tank Girl? It's a pretty great comic made by Jamie Hewlett (of Gorillaz fame) and Andy C. Martin. If so there's a pretty sweet Tank Girl Kickstarter. Check it: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/332295438/21st-century-tank-girl-a-book-by-hewlett-and-marti
  16. I was under the impression that this was a bug, as it wasn't guaranteed that you'd get humanity when aiding someone. I found I got humanity 1/4 times I helped, and then after an update, not at all. (As they fixed it)
  17. That explains things. Guess I'm waiting then ._. One other thing that's important for beginners - when duel wielding weapons, if you hold Y and attack you'll get different attack animations. You have to hold Y, not press it. Also it's dependent on your weapons you have equipped. some won't provide you with unique attack animations.
  18. It's showing 2 hours on steam, but 8(!) days on my physical pre-order at shopto.net
  19. Hipsters

You should check out the film Stormy Weather for more like that. It's also awesome to see some Jazz greats playing live. Two particular favourite scenes are: Fats waller: Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers: Oh and more Fats Waller. Gotta love some Fats:
  20. Anyone visiting their Kickstarter forums

I got forum access to the (then) Double Fine Adventure. It wasn't all that. There were some polls which didn't seem to affect the game, like one about art-style, another about music, but most were just threads which seemed irrelevant and not interesting. Plus their page count was too ridiculous to be bothered to read through it all, and I got access pretty early. I read a couple of dev posts which were interesting, but stopped after my third visit and waited for the episodes to come out instead.
  21. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

There are some bosses in Dark Souls 2 that you'll really like then I like the 4 kings boss, and Nito is Neato. Gaping dragon is easy: yeah, just run away. It's a pretty large arena, so it's not too hard, and the acid is slow moving.
  22. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

The thing about Sif is that whilst he isn't all that great a fight, he's the only boss that shows emotion and weakness. He starts limping when he's at 25%, which makes it heart-wrenchingly sad to deliver the final blow. Also story wise, he's got a sad story in general, only to be sadder for you to kill him when all he's doing is protecting the grave of his master. Also finishing the DLC before taking on Sif gives you a different cut scene. The Gaping dragon is a great fight, and terrifying when first encountered. Although he did get quickly dubbed the 'vagina dragon'. I love smacking his head and watching it comically wiggle about.
  23. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

Thanks! Nah, I cheesed it with the Havel's armor. only put on the chest plate, as then I could at least do a medium roll. (I hate fat roll, it's the worst), I maxed out my pyromancy flame to +15, then used combustion and great combustion to kill the first two Kings, and then used my lightning reinforced club + 3 (as it dealt more damage than my fire RC +5) to kick the last two's butts. I tried power within, but found it killed me more than anything. Now onto dickery! XD
