Quantized Roguelike Chess Dancing: Crypt of the Necrodancer
N1njaSquirrel replied to Golden Calf's topic in Video Gaming
I've been enjoying this game as of late. I actually think the art direction is pretty solid, although I have only just finished the first zone. I'm going to assume that as it's in EA, the art direction will be nailed down more as it creeps closer to the live date. I do agree with the music variety. Especially in the first level of a given zone is just a tad too slow for my liking. some different or more advanced rhythms would be nice. I like the permanent world shops. These are shops where you can spend diamonds that you collect on a run to unlock treasures that then become available in the zones, and upgrades that are permanent. It makes the replay value higher, which is important in rougelikes. Another problem I have is that I'm not quite sure what's the best weapon type. I've noticed that there is 7 weapon types - normal, gold, blood, obsidian, titanite, glass and diamond(?). Most of these are pretty self-explanatory, but I have no idea as to what blood weapons do. I thought they'd increase in damage with kill streaks, but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? Diamond is also obscure, but that's because it's only active when you have a diamond - the next kill consumes a diamond and multiplies the enemy gold drop by a number, and you get a load of gold. Other than that, the problems I have can be easily levelled at rougelikes in general. If you don't get a good roll on the first floor, you're chances of survival are slim. Also my favourite weapons so far is the obsidian whip, which is kinda broken, and the blunderbuss, which I only got once - but holy moly it destroys everything. Finally the way they do magic spells and consumable items is great. Instead of another button, you have to press up + left or down + right. It's a bit cumbersome at first, but when you get into the swing of things it's really satisfying to drop spells and bombs without missing a beat. It's also an interesting way of using a restricted button set, which I dig. (as it means you can still play it on a dance mat, which is rad). I guess that's all for now? This game is good fun. I give it 2 thumbs up. -
Oh it's Bill Murray. Riiiight now it makes sense. What? I have not seen these shirts. Maybe it's an American thing? In England, I'm sick of the 'Keep Calm and Carry On' variants that are all over the shop. It doesn't even have to make sense or be funny anymore. When I went to see Monty Python on Saturday they were selling "Keep Calm and Build a Shrubbery" shirt. Ugh. It's the worst most over used meme ever. It was kinda cute and patriotic, now it's everywhere and infuriating.

So is anyone still reading Naruto? I'm reading every chapter when it comes out, but I'm so disengaged with the franchise, I've just stopped caring. All the supposed 'twists' that happen are just so uninteresting. I don't know if it's a real twist for those who actually give a damn, but for me it's just like 'oh yeah? That chick huh? great. When's this over?'. Ugh. I'm kinda sick of it. Right now they're stuck in a Genjutsu, which I'm pretty sure was explained at the beginning that to get out of a genjutsu you just have to reverse your chakara. Which they have never done. So much lore is brought up and just abandoned on the roadside when the author realises that his rules mean he can't do other cool shit he wants to do, so he just conveniently forgets it. The only reason I'm reading it is because I've come this far already god damnit and I want to see this shit train arrive at it's final destination. One Piece however is still a fantastic read and is a joy to read. Every chapter is fast, fun, and engaging. The best shonen manga ever. I was going to write a lot of stuff about what I'm reading, but I'll save that for later.

God damnit I read this whole thread thinking it was new, until I saw that it was from a year ago. Everyone's shocked reactions at a game that was already out confused the fuck out of me. -

Maybe that's a joke? I thought that too. But I also got confused with The World Ends With You. Worlds should stop ending. All I think of when I hear of The Wonderful End of the World was getting that fucking potato. (although audio wave's one was so much harder) Those god damn potatoes.

Rizzo said in that article that the pokeball was/could have been inherited from that pokemon's parents? I don't know how plausable that is, but if he's traded his ditto across from black/white it could be? tbh my interest in pokemon is not on a level where I want to collect all the pokemans and train them up and breed the best pokemon, I just want to play it until the elite four.

Whilst we're on the topic of Grim Fandango, my favourite t-shirt is a sweet Grim one from a company called Game Tee. Check it: I love it the most because it's so darn inconspicuous. Unless you knew it was Manny, you wouldn't bat an eyelid at it, as it's just another stylish tee. They also did a sweet series of prints as book covers which are rad. Pretty sweet designs imo, although they are quite costly. And they spell video games as one word Link: http://www.gametee.co.uk/

Wake Me Up Before You IndieGoGo: A Crowdfunding Thread
N1njaSquirrel replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
I backed the Yogventures kickstarter. I would like to say I'm angry, but I'm really not. It was so long ago, my interest in the yogscast dropped of the face of the earth and I regret it. I can't remember when I realised my money had gone to waste. Probably the first alpha demo? Their mention of 'Marching Cubes Algorithm' in the wrong context should have been a bit of a give away (something I only knew about because I studied it in my 3rd year project at uni). Also their t-shirt was embarrassingly shit. For what was supposed to be a "T-shirt designed exclusively by the Yogventures concept artists!" it was just a white T-shirt with a black logo, saying 'yogventures' and an outline of Simon & Lewis. Just reeked of a cheap, shitty product that was hastily designed on the cheap, and pushed out to fulfil backer rewards. I never got a poster either, but I heard it was just key art. Does anyone know of the legality stuff in Kickstarter? It seems totally pointless to complain at this point to them, but my missus says I should try and see if I can get my money back? I doubt I will be able to though. I'm pretty sure I can't, but don't know the actual reasons behind why. The rest of my kickstarters are pretty ace actually. Sealark is one I'm really looking forward to, and the Skullgirls one is awesome too. -
The only problem I have with Guybrush is his beard. I thought he was clean shaven :/ I really like the detail of all the items falling out of Guy's coat though.

The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)
N1njaSquirrel replied to Wrestlevania's topic in Idle Banter
Dick's picks 14 is ace. Listening to it now I really like 'The Music Never Stopped'. Conversely, I'm not such a great fan of 'Drums' and 'Dark Star' esq stuff. It's certainly the most commonly skipped song when I play the only live set I own. (Veneta, OR 8/27/72 (also on spotify)) I feel that it's probably better appreciated if you were actually there? I do appreciate it musically, just not always my cup of tea. Yeah, Donna's kinda annoying in later shows. She kinda feels like she's forced her way into the line up (she's married to Keith right?) I'm liking everyone's stories though. I have yet to meet a fan of the Grateful Dead in England yet, so I never hear of these stories. It's cool how more than one person knows of someone who have gone to 100+ shows. England doesn't have these kinda of rock fables, just mods and rockers. There are memorable gigs, but there wasn't a whole movement and community around bands like the Dead ever got. That people reminisce and romanticise this era and the shows is really cool for me. I listened! I was going to suggest Caravan Palace or Swingrower's, but I didn't want to create an account with grooveshark to do so. :S -

The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)
N1njaSquirrel replied to Wrestlevania's topic in Idle Banter
That's a pretty awesome song. Thanks for opening my ears to this band. I like Going Steady. Is anyone a fan of The Grateful Dead here? The more I get into them, the crazier the rabid devoted fan base become. It's crazy how much they argue over the best set, the best rendition of one song, their most nostalgic tape recording. And then there are sub-divisions in that fan club - collectively known as 'Dead Heads', there are also like 'Wharf Rats' who supported each other to be drug free, and 'Tapers' who taped their live shows. It goes on and on. But I really like the music. It's great. China Cat sunflower is a particular favourite of mine. Especially when jammed into I Know You Rider. -
Earthbound, Mega Man X and Super Mario World are the SNES games I have on the WiiU (as well as Super Metroid, but you've already mentioned that). Also I know this doesn't quite fit the bill, but if you haven't experienced Advance Wars on the GBA you should pick that up. The NES remixes do a good job of showcasing NES games, and they're on sale now. I think.

Super Smash Bros. (Spoiler: Snake Kills Ganondorf)
N1njaSquirrel replied to tegan's topic in Video Gaming
So Chrom isn't a playable character, he's just Lucina's smash attack. idk if everyone knew that or not. I didn't XD It also wouldn't surprise me if Sakurai doesn't care about the roster number any more. If he does, I could live without Ganondorf, Ice Climbers, Wario and Metaknight. Especially as Ganondorf was just a re-skinning of Captain Falcon. As G&W is already in a video, if not breifly, (as well as 2 previous versions), I'd be suprised if he removes him. (also he's awesome. I'd be sad to see him go) Yeah, but Ness only ever shouted PK Fire. Robin shouted a different attack name depending on the power of the attack -which is essentially the same name but with an addex suffix/prefix. Just reminded me of the 'spectral blade, improved spectral blade, astral blast...' bit. -
Two Idle Thumbs Up - At the (Video Game) Movies
N1njaSquirrel replied to Bjorn's topic in Video Gaming
I don't, but I do work darn close. (Transversal, it's in the building behind the Flying Pig). Part three is a "return to form", as the critics put it, despite it being straight-to-video. After settling the court case and watching Kotick throw his ruff to the floor and stamp on it repeatedly, whilst Holo-Kurt and Courtney trot off into the sunset, the Rock Banders return to their crib, crash on the couch with a cool Pepsi Max® and freshly ordered pizza from Papa Johns®, They turn on their Sony® Bravia™ Television to some shocking news - The Guitar Freaks are coming. The Eastern music scene was largely ignored up until now due to their simplistic instruments ("three buttons? Do you even HOPO?") and their retro design ("Whilst your lane is flat and uniform, our lanes look into the distance... look into the future... Not just for us, but for the music! YEEEAAAAAAHHHHH"), they have now formed a power band thanks to their two new members - Taiko no Tatsujin on drums ("Expert? Bitch you ain't got nuttin' on Oni mode") and Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA on vocals to become a force so unstoppable, they pose a severe threat not only to The Rock Banders, but to the American dream. An epic rock battle ensues - a mix of classic rock and anime theme tunes compete head to head. The final song in the playlist loads, and The Rock Banders do the impossible. The thing that dreams are made of - an event more memorable than Woodstock, more incredulous than Bobby Kotick's forced retirement - they 100% Green Grass and High Tides. ("Dude, this solo is killer!" "Dayum Man this Solo is so long!", "ANOTHER SOLO? How can this be?!?!?", "This solo guys... It's still going...", "ugh another solo? seriously?", "Finally, the big band ending! This is... long.", "Thank god it's over! Let's go.") The crowd explodes, the Guitar Freaks, having witnessed the most incredible thing in rock history, humbly admit defeat, and promise never to shake the foundation of the American Dream, and leave. Also it's 2AM and they're missing the beginning of Love Live! -

Two Idle Thumbs Up - At the (Video Game) Movies
N1njaSquirrel replied to Bjorn's topic in Video Gaming
O_o Next you're going to tell me we work in the same office. Controversial statement: Pan's Labyrinth. Wasn't a fan. Hellboy 2. Wasn't a fan. I don't think I'm a fan of Del Toro, if my track record of his films watched to liked ratio is true. New film idea: Rockband: The Movie. Directed by Rob Reiner, this is the tale of 5 best buds who start a band, and only perform hits from other known bands, yet still aquire fame and fortune, because they play the songs so darn well. Tension rises when the keytarist is not playing in half their songs on the setlist. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE'S NO KEYBOARD PART IN DON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN?" shouts the keytarist, before cutting to a live performance of said song where nobody's playing anything and just standing there for 2 minuets before the drums kick in again. Cut to the keytarist shooting evils at his band mates. The keytarist quits, and it doesn't affect the band at all. He comes back later though when there's more Keytar DLC released. Another ongoing storyline in the movie is the raging war between "The Rock Banders" and "The Guitar Heroes" - Whilst the Rock Banders are less popular, they have an underdog vibe and therefore everyone loves them. The Guitar Heroes start off as a brilliant acoustic duo, before changing managers and 'selling out', by increasing the band size to accommodate 2 other people they are forced to play with by their managers. Their popularity rises, but as their album releases increase, their songs become needlessly complicated. Their merchandise becomes so large that they start saturating the market. The Guitar Heroes' licensed slippers & Jammies set are sold for $3, with a 90% discount. Their live shows become even worse due to a group fall-out, and they can't decide which instrument they want to play any more. In their last stage show, they got booed off the stage as 3 drummers and one Bassist try to play 'Knights of Cydonia'. Fuelled by debt and depression, the original guitar heroes duo commit suicide, and the other two members fade into obscurity. Meanwhile the Rock Banders are staying steady and true. They keep a level head, and are remembered in the annuls of history. Their fame and fortune also gave them the opportunity to buy themselves out of a contract with a big record label and go independent. The popularity of the film also generates a stage musical, and then a stage musical Album and tour, which then comes round full circle as 'Rock Band: The Album of the Musical from the Film' is the first announced DLC for Rockband 4. -
Super Smash Bros. (Spoiler: Snake Kills Ganondorf)
N1njaSquirrel replied to tegan's topic in Video Gaming
They're from the latest Fire Emblem game. (which is really good btw) Robin is the player model, and you can choose to be either a girl or boy, hence the gender swap at the end. Also, was it just me who thought that the magic attacks Robin shouted sounded like the talking bit in the Shitty Wizard song lord Remo did? Sakurai Has just announced it's going to be re-titled Super Smash Rabbids -
I need to finish that show Also, if you're interested, the Steins;Gate game that the anime was based off has been localised. It's a tad expensive, but it's meant to flesh out the characters in the anime a whole lot more, as well as different endings, and numerous other things they couldn't squeeze into the anime. This site is all you need for anime torrents: http://horriblesubs.info/ - at least those with a funi/CR sub. Which is pretty much every show nowadays.

My main irritation of sports anime is the telepathic communication that everyone seems to have about what's going on. Kuroko does it really bad, where they switch between like 10 different people who are supposedly all having the same train of thought at the same time, as well as the people on the court. It gets even weirder when there's like an argument thrown in there, like 'oh man they can't do this coz this guy is like the best' 'sure, the guy is the best, but he is only the best at winning. He hasn't felt the thirst and need that people need to win and therefore the underdog will win because he's the best at wanting to win' 'Hahahaha fools! Merely wanting to win is not enough to win! You must be the best!' and so on. The first episode of glasslip felt more like a romantic thing than just about glass blowing. I mean, there was a bit where people blew some glass, but it was just a cut-between scenes. There was no actual mention of the glass blowing, just that it happened. If you want something lighthearted, I'd suggest Love Lab, it's moe shit, but it's fucking funny. I laughed so hard at this anime. And the yuks just keep on coming. I really hope for a S2 because it's great. Oh man Kuroko goes all out on the super-powers in the Winter Cup. The match with Murasakibara (I think that's his name, the purple one) has that kinda shit all over the place and it's so ridiculous but it's so darn great. Haikyu is pretty normal, but idk about Yowapeda. Have you forgotten Abs? And the ability to have more energy by taking a deep breath? I mean, sure, you'll have more oxygen to use, but you won't have the same surface area. It won't generate more energy. What bullshit science is this! I mean, it's not on the level of Kuroko but it's getting there.

I watched the claymore anime and thought it started off well, but then went downhill sharply. The ending was rubbish. A couple of my friends have read the manga and they say it's much better though.
