  1. Think I have to wait until this weekend so I can really sit down and soak this one in, need to reach a happy point in The Witness before then. This is shaping up to be a life-stealing few weeks of video games for sure.
  2. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

Funnily enough that's how I happened to get it to work as well. Coincidence or the Blow?
  3. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

Got a question about the ++ puzzles
  4. Little bummed I have to give Valve some of the money I'd prefer to give my favorite studio, but if there's no other way I'll manage.
  5. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

Captain's log, Day 6. Everything is a clue, if not, perhaps a puzzle itself. Send help.
  6. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

Got my first one. This is going to be a long game.
  7. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

I still don't have any +'s next to my co.pleted number, so I'm super excited to figure that out. There are some things areound the island that are driving me nuts because I don't know their purpose. I suspect they are the clue.
  8. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

The greenhouse (if you can call it that, not sure what the official PS4 achievement name is) is blindingly colorful at times
  9. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

Blow has stated that they tried to design the game with enough non-linear options that if you got stuck you could simply walk somewhere else and try a different puzzle. In the Giant Bomb Presents interview he said one of his primary goals was to avoid the pitfall in adventure games where the player gets stuck and then simply can't play the game any more until they figure out the one puzzle they're stuck on. Looking forward to seeing how well they were able to do that. That interview was also really interesting when he got into explaining why he chose maze puzzles: as a nearly universal way to explain how to to solve more complex puzzles, rather than having obtuse solutions that were only solvable by trial and error like in traditional adventure games. He does a bit better job articulating what that means than I do. Anyways, excited to see if those goals were achieved.

I just hope the long development time is worth it. I could never really tell if Blow had too big of a head, but I'm willing to trust him. I respect a lot of the ideas he has around prototyping and development, enough so that I like to think he was genuinely doing valuable work these past years. $40 makes sense to me in light of that opinion, and also in light of the way I digest games now (that is to say, pretty slowly). I've gotten far more than $40 worth of enjoyment from The Talos Principle, and equally as much from Braid. I'm a bit interested in why he would make his own engine for this game, whether that's more of his style, or more of a necessity based on some aspect of gameplay/art. I have trouble imagining anything more than the former. TL;DR I hope it lives up to the hype.
  11. The Witcher 3: What Geralt Wants

To those that didn't enjoy the combat, what difficulty setting were you playing on? I felt that once I turned the difficulty up the decisions around which signs and potions to use at what point and in different situations mattered much more and gave it some decent depth. It certainly can get difficult as fuck at points.
  12. Half-Life 3

    Half-Life 2 Episode 2.5 Part 1
  13. GTA V

I could watch that person's stream all day.
  14. Far Cry PRIMAL

Wish this was being announced a year from now so it could have been a glorious Hocking return-to-form. Can't imagine he's had much of a hand in it.
  15. The Witcher 3: What Geralt Wants

I'm in the middle of that now, and sidequesting with the witch. For all of this game's flaws it's amazing how little they seem to matter when the writing gets good and you're feeling immersed in the world.
  16. Steam Box

Been waiting for a controller for forever, but I'm going to hold off until they're out. Even with hardware I'm not really the pre-ordering type. Good news is that it looks like they did a great job, super excited to see how well it plays with FPS's. I have one of these mini keyboard+trackpad combos and it works well for turn-based strategy games, I can imagine the Steam Controller will be a great replacement. Anyone know if it works as a standard keyboard+mouse outside of Steam? Would love to be able to control my entire HTPC with one.
  17. The Witcher 3: What Geralt Wants

Just picked up the game and I'm loving it so far. A few hours in readying for my fight with the griffin. Only critique I have about the tutorial area is that it I started wanting to use potions, crafting, and oils but there was little tutorialization of how potions refill, or how crafting/alchemy works. Also no mention of what a "Master Item" is, but I take it those are items that are not destroyed on use. I think I need recipes for new potions items? Where do these recipes come from? Might just be that I jumped into those systems before they've been fully introduced by some more formal tutorial quest.
  18. The threat of Big Dog

Crawling over the rubble of your ruined civilization (Also )
  19. Dota Today 17: Aui_2000

Really really enjoyed this episode, one of my favorites, I've gotta say. I wasn't too familiar with Aui as a person beforehand, but I feel like I got a good amount of insight into how he approaches the game. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about at all, but I was very impressed with his thoughts and insights about the scene, practice, and his future. The flow of the interview had a couple hiccups, but they didn't bother me much. I guess there might be some rough edges, but I really love the new format. You guys had some great questions, and I think it's very cool to see interviews with DOTA personalities in this kind of casual setting, focused so well on Aui the person. Keep doing what you're doing because it's great.
  20. So glad Gex was mentioned in an episode. A while back I remember discussion around "video game-ass video games," and Gex is definitely the one that stands out from my childhood as a great example. It fits right alongside other zany platformers of the era like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro (which have great lore themselves). Needless to say, I know what just made its way into my weekend: A great sequel, complete with surprise twisty cliffhanger of an ending:
  21. Twin Peaks Rewatch 1: Pilot

I feel like I've been living under a rock my whole life for not having heard of (maybe in passing I must have) this show. I was born the year it aired so I suppose that explains most of it. The tone is seriously masterful, and I'm a huge fan of the quirky black humor in films like this juxtaposed against horror elements. I'm trying to watch one episode a week to keep pace with the cast, but it's tough to resist binging out. I really enjoyed the format of the cast too, I'm not a huge film critic so it was nice to have some freeform discussion and mullings-over leading into more in depth conversations. A nice way to ease into things. And splitting the episode with reader mail in the non-spoiler section is great. Going to watch the second episode now, very excited.
  22. For people into the analysis done in that CS:GO video, you'd probably love Rapha's breakdown of his Quake Live duel against Cooler: It's far and away my favorite bit of e-sports (and not too long). Also, Quake Live *was* just added to Steam recently... EDIT: Re-watching it, I swear every time I'm more and more amazed by the precision in that game and the level that they think at. If you haven't watched Quake duels before, basically controlling the respawns of items is everything (to strengthen yourself and choke out your opponent).
  23. Unreal Tournament (The new one)

I think I know what you mean, having played a bunch of Quake Live recently. The pace of the game seems a bit slower (projectiles, running speed) than Quake for sure. It looks closer to Halo, really. The rockets seem very similar to Halo, and the movespeed too. Though of course, it's more likely that Halo is similar to UT than the other way around... That "frog jumping" kind of movement looks like it would take some getting used to coming from other games. Never seen anyone do single strafe jumps like that, is that a common UT thing? It seems the movespeed penalty on landing is pretty severe so they can't be chained together? Some of those maps look like they would be a blast to play on with QL movement.
  24. DOTA 2

Kind of interesting, teams qualifying for ESL One NYC will have played a very different game that what will be played at the LAN event.
