  1. I'm trying to make a sigil for house Vanaman. Does anyone know what "kill their wives" would be in Gaelic?

I was taught Irish in school but forget everything now. Using a simple translator I came up with,

''mharú a bhean chéile'' (Pronounced ''VAR-ooh ah van HAY-la'' )

Bhean chéile is 'wife', and I'm not sure how to pluralize it. Maybe ''bheanna chéile'' ?

So my best shot would be, ''Mharú na bheanna chéile''. Not certain though.

  2. Calling it right now: movie of the year.

    And my favorite:

Did the CG-ness of that first trailer bother anyone else?

Cuaron seems to get a mega-boner from single take stuff, but that's only impressive to me if it's a real camera filming real people in a real place. Having CG puppets keyframing around the scene is a really good way to get me to not care about the scene.

The 'drifting' trailer is badass though.

  3. For curious minds (the Wikipedia pages for the kings of Munster and for eleventh- and twelfth-century Ireland before the Anglo-Norman settlement in general being pretty abysmal), here is a genealogy page for Murchad mac Donnchada, the Thumbs' first player character.

Oh, interesting! According to another Wikipedia page, Murchad was killed in 1068 fighting his nephew Toirdelbach ua Brian, king of Munster and de facto high king of Ireland from 1068 to 1086, after the former's father had been driven from the throne of Munster. Murchad's son, Bran or Brian, never even ruled So see, even with that fraught playthrough, they already did better than history! Well, not better than their nephew did in real life, but better than their own character.

I'm from Dublin and I can't believe how much of this I have absolutely no fucking idea about. Time for a wikipedia binge methinks.

I have no idea how to pronounce Murchad. I think it might be kinda like ''Murr-hud'', really soft pronunciation of the 'C'. I dunno.

  4. cute!

this is cool & has a lot of strong points.

osmosisch was spot on with the crits. I'd take it somewhere like this if you wanna piece of dat sotc vibe

    Guhh! Whoa! Whoa.

That is fuckin sweet. It's what I was aiming for but not able to achieve. Mind going into the process a little? Photoshop/tablet?

Totally agree with everything osmosisch says, I regretted that cheap glow as soon as I added it.

  5. Wasn't going to post this, but I thought I'd try to take some of the pointers in this thread and give something a go:

Light/shade I've always struggled with, so I thought I'd try to create something with no/very few lines, just tones. I only really posted this for feedback, so please tear it to shreds and tell me what I'm doing wrong! I think it's a pretty good representation of how I approach artwork at the moment and I'd like to improve!

  6. Thing is, without a guide, how far do we really think Chris would have got? I'd wager he wouldn't have reached the Taurus demon which would have made a more frustrating watch for us.

Solid information about the game's various systems is pretty much invaluable, since the game itself is in absolutely no hurry to explain anything to you.

  7. Dave, can I assume that you also dislike Yoshi as much as I do? 'Cause that is one feral-lookin' Yoshi.

I don't know about 'dislike', seeing as Yoshi (especially Yoshi's Island) was kind of a childhood staple.

On the one hand Yoshi is cute as hell, on the other, well... he's a carnivorous all-consuming dinosaur who shits eggs.

  8. Sweet. All ink, no photoshop?

I feel a bit of a cheat just lazily opening photoshop and sketching away with a tablet. But I feel I need that undo button or my work would suck even more ass.

Feels good to be drawing again, thought. Haven't for years.

  9. Have to echo the Catch-22 recommendation.

To this day it's the only book that I've read and literally cried laughing while doing so. It seems like I can't go a year without giving it a re-read.

  10. Got it on that Steam sale, cheers.

There might be some links elsewhere in this thread, but I figured I might as well ask; can you recommend any links/video tutorial type stuff for absolute beginners? I've tried the game a few times now and come up against an impenetrable wall of interface complexity!

I'm far from quitting it (it's fun running a lordly dynasty into the ground with a series of nonsensical decisions), but I might actually like to know what the hell is going on at some point.

  11. I really must check out The Selfish Gene. I've always been a fan of Dawkins but I've somehow sidestepped his most noteworthy book. I'd look forward to it all the more if the focus is, like you say, more on the science.

  12. Is The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution worth reading?

    A typical experience of this book for me was as follows;

    - I'd become engrossed in some biological concept which Dawkins has an undeniable talent for explaining beautifully and clearly.

    - This would then be quickly followed by some labored broadside on the Creationist view on the matter.

It just seemed unnecessary to me. Dawkins outlines this scientific evidence so clearly that I was already 'on his side'. I didn't need to have this followed by a four-page rant about how silly creationists are.

  13. Hello! For some reason I listen to this podcast even though I don't know what Dota 2 even IS, but I simply enjoy the listening experience.

I don't know what the goal of the game is. I don't know what ''lanes'' are.

I played Warcraft 3 and I'm familiar with some hero mechanics, so today (DOTATODAY), after ingesting today's podcast with my ears, I downloaded the fuck out of Dota 2.

After finishing the tutorial mission in a dreamlike haze I pressed the ''find game'' button. I was full of confidence at this point. Seriously. I knew how to buy stuff. I knew how to move my Lord. Piece of piss.

    The game started and I had to pick a guy. I picked Nightstalker because he sounded and looked cool. After spawning I bought some stuff and then ran around. Nobody talked or said anything. I didn't know what to do except that I should probably murder ''creeps''. So I murdered many creeps and leveled up my Lord. I had this vague idea that I should try to ''hold'' a ''lane'', so I moved my Nightstalker to the center lane which was unoccupied. Pretty soon we came under attack but I held fast, sending back wave after wave of creeps and gaining levels fast. Suddenly, the team chat shuddered to life;

    ''wtf''

What? Is it something I did?

Within one minute of this message I realized that my entire team had disconnected and I was completely alone so I quit. The end.

    What is this game??

  14. HelloI am new and reading this and saying hi!

My name is Dave and I am a graphic design/animator dude, making mostly web stuff. Idle thumbs is pretty grate amirite?

I started listening when I got wind of all the hubbub around the kickstarter, and I am glad I did.

    Okay, that's that!

  15. Anyone else find themselves skipping over a lot of the dialog? Could be that I was enjoying the game so much I just wanted to get back to kicking doors in guards faces, but my eyes kinda glazed over during a lot of that stuff. I do plan on replaying the game and paying closer attention.

I wasn't overly bothered by the length, but those last couple of maps were far too easy.

I'd been following Tom Francis' writing for years and it was a huge pleasure to take in the finished game. Interesting to see the first blog post made about Gunpoint, then titled ''Private Dick'':
