  1. Not a huge music guy, but I've been listening to two groups almost non-stop, so here ya go.

Ratatat kicks serious ars. Think of the best hip-hop songs you can and remove those annoying "vocal" things.

You probably already know Guthrie as he did the soundtrack for Sword & Sworcery, and Indie Game the Movie.

  2. There isn’t really much of a story in Senran Kagura, because the main character is boobs. Each character is just a one-dimensional harem manga cliche and characters spend most of their time discussing their sweater-stuffers. Characters threaten to motorboat one another when angry, say they’re going to “get handsy” when they’re happy, and feel inferior when their knockers don’t look as huge as the next girl.

This is why I'm a cynic.

  3. Imagine that cooking game, but with a bunch of half nude dudes bouncing the bulges in their undies the way the ladies bounce their breasts.

To me that sounds absolutely hilarious (if done satirically).

It was dismissive, disempowering and insulting towards its female characters (all 2 of them).  But does a hyper sexualized game like this do the same thing?  Or are its characters at least somewhat fleshed out (sorry, cheap pun)?  Do they have some agency of their own, or at the player's direction?

Didn't the thumbs recently discuss GTA's portrayal of women as being objectifying? I see this as being an extrapolation of that same argument. I can't imagine a game that disrespects its female cast enough to string their breasts like ham would turn around and forge interesting characters. Though all i've seen is that one image, so i can't speak much about that particular example.

  4. I do have some issues with people giving KR0 game of the year nods, but only because It hasn't been fully released. I know it's semantic or whatever, but it will definitely be in my 2014 goty list.

  5. I am highly doubtful they can ever be "good" again. Especially as most people can't even determine when community was at its best.

(A good portion of community fans I know think season 3 is the best, but I think season 1 was clearly the most well written.)

Either way, I guess it probably won't kill me (though it'll give it a good try) to watch the new episodes.

  6. I do think it's an interesting subject; in that western games often rely on violence as the player's main set of actions.

Personally I see this style of game as being offensive and misogynistic.

Though I suppose someone could argue that something like Hotline Miami is offense in its depiction of violence.

As I understand, western culture promotes Violence>Sex, and in eastern culture (predominately Europe) Sex>Violence.

I don't know if this is something that is also true in Japan.*

Is this simply the result of a culture which depicts sexuality as casually as western culture depicts violence?***

If not, where do these games come from? Why is it almost only ever Japan that makes these types of games?

I don't really know enough to say, but I'm curious to know what you all think.

*If I don't know what I'm talking about, and am wrong about everything just tell me to shut up

***If Hotline Miami is an extreme in violence, than games of this type could be considered an extreme in sexuality

  7. Is anyone participating in the global game jam Janurary 24th?

I'm considering going to the ggj vancouver meetup but am honestly a little hesitant/scared. I have 0 experience, don't know anything about the process of the event, and don't have anyone to go with.

I really want to learn unity, and want to attend the workshops they have, but can't without joining the jam and being put on a team to actually make a game.

Do you think gamejams are a good way to learn? or should I wait until I have a bit more experience?

  8. Since 2010 I've been keeping track of my favourite 10 movies of each year (I went as far back as 2006 exclusively so I could include The Departed in a list.)

I figured I would list em out.

Keeping that in mind these are MY favourite movies, and are in no way a measure of quality of even a recommendation. I have a pretty awful taste in movies, I like the extremely dumb action films, sci-fi, and cynical personal stories, for reference.

Also, I've yet to see a few movies (Inside Llewyn Davis, Rush), so the list is as always, subject to change.

    10. Walter Mitty

      9. The Counselor

      8. 12 Years a Slave

      7. Pacific Rim

      6. White House Down

      5. Elysium

      4. Star Trek: Into Darkness

      3. Wolf of Wallstreet

      2. This Is The End

      1. Gravity

This year has been a fantastic year for movies. Honorable Mentions include:

    21 and Over

    Iron Man 3

    Fast 6

    Man of Steel

    The World's End

    Oblivion (Surprisingly good Sci-Fi)

    Prisoners

    Pain and Gain

  9. I actually felt some weird sense of loss after beating Fez. It didn't compute with me that I could "complete" this game; it would be like solving all of the world's mysteries.

  10.

my biggest problem is I have no personal projects to show off. Or, at least, none that are finished or in a state where they're worth showing off. I know that's hugely important, but I have a hard time staying motivated when I don't have someone to work WITH. If I had just one friend who regularly contributed, their work would motivate me, and vice versa. I know I'm good enough for most jobs I interview for, but hell if I can convince anyone!

I agree. Learning something is difficult without exterior motivation (at least for me). I want to learn Unity, but without a friend or a class I keep trailing off. If I had someone to study with it would probably stick but the trouble is finding people you trust with similar ambitions (especially at 19-20, when everyone I know is off starting their lives).

I imagine SF has a few game jams you should look out for? is that something you think would help?

  11. will you say "work for exposure" next

Not "exposure" so much as "compilation" I guess :P

I don't know why that would offend me. U:

I did my best to make it non-offensive, but there is a possibility for many people to take what I said as meaning "why don't you look for a job harder". Which isn't what I meant, and why I opened with "not to offend".

  12. Incoming heresey:  In-N-Out isn't as good as people say it is.

My LA-domestic sister insists on picking me/my family up from the airport if we ever fly down there for the express purpose of In-N-Out. I don't get it either :/

  13. Not to offend Twig, but I assume there is a lot of freelance programming work needed online. There may not be a lot of paid work but at least you'll get some reference work.
