  1. 2014 Predictions!

The Witness will be good but will repel people for having words in it. Then they'll call Jonathan Blow pretensions for defending words. Dark Souls 2 won't be as good as dark souls 1. I'll enjoy it but the Souls community will exile me for my beliefs. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be announced, subsequently released, critically praised, and then forgotten 6 months later (Black Ops 2 fans will say its awful and boycott/buy the shit out of it) PHIL FISH SHALL RISE AGAIN then leave again for being called a bitch after not sticking with his guns. Titanfall will be alright but the day it comes out people will remember it's being published by EA and cut themselves until they fix the servers DICE will announce they've fixed the servers for Battlefield 4 and soon after release 3 dlc packs (the servers still won't work right) Destiny will be actually good and will be GOTY'd like crazy. Then Activision will release another one next year (made by Raven or Sledgehammer) Mass Effect 4 won't be called Mass Effect 4 Rocksteady will release a Batman Game. It will be pretty good. There will be another VGX spike will say the VGX 2013 was a success and learn nothing. People will watch it, then complain. Indie Games will continue to be released and good, and will stop me from crying myself to sleep.

I'd actually argue that The Last of Us is quite an achievement in gaming. Not that it does anything specifically "innovative", but that it manages with such a large staff and budget to maintain a cogent and directed experience. I don't 'believe' the triple a gamespace is capable of a lot of innovation, but in everyday it can succeed, the last of us did. So, The Last of Us, IGN's AAA game of the year. Incredibly well said!

So... and correct me if i'm wrong... it seems like the answer to all of our problems is "fuck ign".
  4. Reading about Games

    agreed. thanks for sharing
  5. (IGN.com)

I caught on to it after its conclusion, but the Danielle Riendeau v. Dragon's Crown stuff absolutely infuriated me. Fuck the people who make those claims, sincerely. (A conversation for a different thread) So, for argument's sake, I generally agree with Polygon reviews, or more accurately, they often align with my own opinions. Unlike Gamespot or IGN I feel their standards for 8s-9s are a lot higher. That is my opinion. I recognize they aren't absolute in their scoring, and they don't determine a game's quality with their reviews (but that'd be a hell of a super power). This helps me extrapolate what I may feel about games I have yet to play. I respect the majority of their opinions (yes, even Gies) and it helps me forge my own. Is me not agreeing with a majority of IGN or Gamespot reviews (aside from VanOrd) the equivalent of IGN goers who complain about Kollar giving Last of Us 7.5 or Gies giving Shadow Fall 5? Am I just experiencing this argument from the mirroring side? If so, it may explain why I agree with Miller separating his games based on personal appreciation and "professional" obligation.
  6. Movie/TV recommendations

Yeah Wolf of Wallstreet was pretty fucking great. If you don't enjoy Scorsese (first, re-examine your life, because you're doing it wrong) than maybe don't see it; it is one hell of a Scorsese ass film. Also, just watched Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind and Haywire. I recommend both, but each very conditionally. Spotless Mind is one of the most Mature movies about relationships and who we choose to trust/spend time with. That in mind, it isn't a love story in the way Nicolas Spark has made famous. As someone who HATES optimism (I do, especially in film) for generally being chessy and shoehorned in I felt the last 3 minutes were the most real and mature i've ever seen in what essentially is a romantic comedy (granted, one that's insanely dark and twisted). Haywire, on the other hand, simply appeals to me as a film nerd. If you don't know what it is, then it's worth watching the opening 20 minutes or so, but keep in mind, it's a slow ass movie, and will only be enjoyed by people looking for more of an interesting experience, than one of action or story. My one issue with it was that the music felt composed for something of a Bond-like and clashed heavily with the slow pacing and generally just blared brass at me for 10 minutes while the protagonist chased through alley after alley.

Today's steam sale is fantastic. Get Swapper, Get Spelunky. Get Brothers. Get Torchlight 2. MAAAAAAYBE get deadlight. Wasn't a huge fan.
  8. (IGN.com)

I think that is an unfair assessment. Last of Us is actually a very good, cogent, and well executed experience (I gave it an 8 when I reviewed it) and people enjoying a good game is actually a refreshing change of pace. Aside from that I understand your argument but unfortunately it hasn't swayed me; I still feel he is entitled to both his personal opinion and a professional critical mentality. Its a problem unique to gaming, in that no other medium is journalism considered "enthusiast" (ie journalists clapping during e3 presentations). I kind of wish we just went back to blogging about games, when its one person and not a corporate entity you know their recommendations are personal.
  9. (IGN.com)

Miller does make an interesting point (to play devil's advocate) regarding professional opinion versus personal opinion. There is a lot of entertainment I would critic as being wholly awful, but I still 100% enjoyed (White House Down, Fast 5, etc). However, as a 'professional' what is then your obligation? To rank games based on your opinion or on your critical analysis? On one hand I'd think that if GOTY is supposed to be a symbol for an exalting recommendation then you should recommend the highest achievement in Gaming (objective) of the Year. However, I generally turn to outlets who's collective personal opinions I respect (one being Giant Bomb; who have objectively middling games on their list such as DiveKick) and there I would like the GOTY to be a collective agreement in their personal recommendations; but that's just me as a semi-informed/semi-intellectual games enthusiast. IGN is much more of an E than an Ebert, giving their thoughts on games to a more general audience, which should in some weird way be commended (though... fuck ign). I'm torn. Anyone have any input? EDIT: Additional Thoughts So, thinking about this, I realize it is highly dependent on what the outlet is intended for. Giant Bomb being a cast of game-literate enthusiasts who share their opinion in the industry I expect personal opinion regularly. But IGN focuses on giving more 'objective' scores (even if they do so poorly) for a less game-literate audience and as such it would make sense if their GOTY was more of an "award" for high achievements in gaming. Which means I kind of accept his personal goty being different than his 'professional' recommendation. If I'm wrong tell me why. My opinion isn't set in stone yet.
  10. Far Cry 2

how do you not have a job at ign yet?

  12. Flatout Ultimate Carnage (or Flatout 2)

I played Flatout 2 daily for about 2 years. You're telling me there's a newer one? I'm sold. Edit: Wait, how do y'all feel about the third one, which I also just realized exists.
  13. Gone Home from The Fullbright Company

You're not alone. Steve is reading this now ringing his hands with sadistic pleasure. I really love how manipulative this game is emotionally, and it kind of sucks to see that point being used negatively in game press/enthusiast discussion.
  14. General Video Game Deals Thread

Yeah, part of me just wants to buy it to give back to Klei. They're from Vancouver (where I live) and I feel like they're a good standard for local indie devs. Still, I woke up, saw 1.70 and JUMPED at the deal.

My Updated Buy List Antichamber Binding of Isaac Gunpoint Frozen Synapse Kentucky Route Zero (on Humble) Machinarium Monaco Penny Arcade 4 Super Hexagon Sword & Sworcery The Walking Dead Writing these down I think I may play too many indie games... I was just about to buy a Don't Starve Two Pack for $1.70 but I guess Valve or whoever realized that was a mistake while I was checking out and brought the price up to $7. Too rich for my taste.
  16. General Video Game Deals Thread

I was so hoping Kentucky Route Zero would be voted instead I've been waiting this entire sale for it to drop below 15!!! So far I've bought The Walking Dead Season 1 (going to replay it for Season 2) Super Hexagon (because 29 cents) Antichamber Sword and Sworcery PC (but I got that on Humble) and Machinarium I'm really hoping Frozen Synapse drops just a LITTLE bit more (i'm cheap, sue me), I just found it (I wasn't a PC gamer in 2011) and I have been playing the demo like crazy. Super stoked to play it.
  17. Gone Home from The Fullbright Company

Can you eat the sticker? Edit: Always Sunny reference. Sorry if no one else watches but it was finally relevant, and I had to take my chance.

  22. Reading about Games

I think that my not knowing the difference says a lot sorry. And thanks everyone (especially Tycho) for the reading material! Greatly appreciated.
  23. GOTY.cx 2013

No, I never owned a Wii and was actively disinterested in every aspect of it. Though, I did eventually buy one for my Mom, maybe I'll go back and play it (It does seem very cool).
  24. The Room Two

I just played the room (one) a couple of weeks ago. So I think I'll wait a month or so to play this one.
