I have a single hair on my left eyebrow that grows over 4 inches long.

That was a most excellent post.

Fair enough and I agree with that. I just don't think it is quite correct to refer to evidence suggesting that milk isn't good for you as "pseudoscience".
-
Are you saying all of the studies that refute the supposed benefits of milk did not adhere to the scientific method and are not valid?
-
So under that logic wouldn't the studies you choose not to ignore be equally as fallible? You can't say I am factually incorrect when your opinion is simply based on what you want to believe.
-
There is actually mounting evidence that milk is not good for you and depletes calcium from your bones. Even if the reasoning behind it is wrong your friend is better off without it. And there are lots of other sources of Vitamins A and D. Otherwise I would have crashed my car at night and died due to night blindness.

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

I haven't done it before myself but I don't think it's all that different from replacing a cpu fan. However, I'm not sure if there all GPU fans work with all GPUs or if there are specific form factors to consider. -

I'm pretty sure you can just get an aftermarket fan. I know some people that have replaced their graphic card fan so they could overclock the card so I would assume it isn't too difficult to replace. -
The problem some feminists have with it is that when a woman chooses to stay at home, that makes employers more likely to view women as a risky investment and it contributes to the workplace being dominated by males (or so a random article on Google tells me). It's actually a good point and I can't argue against the validity of that sentiment. My problem with that viewpoint is that I think it focuses on the wrong issue. It seems that people who support that view seek change through tipping the balance of power rather than seeking change through educating and raising awareness about feminist issues to men and women alike. Put it another way, I don't think leveling out the playing field so that half of the work force is comprised of women is necessarily the right approach to achieve true equality, nor does it send the right message about what feminism is. But I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here. I'm curious about this space feminist concept now too. Are they feminists from space or are they a subset of earth feminists that relocated to space?

So I'm going to derail this derailment with something that I take exception to within the feminist movement: the attitude towards stay-at-home moms. The argument goes that every woman that drops out of the work force or chooses not to enter the workforce stands in the way of gender equality. This argument actually kind of makes logical sense when you look at the reasoning behind it but it is something I just can't get behind. My wife is currently a stay-at-home mom. She graduated in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in Family Studies and Human Development and was 6 months pregnant at the time. She decided not to enter the workforce upon graduating and instead planned to stay at home with the baby. The main two reasons she did this were that she planned to breastfeed and she wanted to have a greater hand in raising our child instead of having the child raised in day care. I could have stayed home with the baby but it ended up being her because the field I graduated in pays much more (enough to support all of us) and she did not want to bottle feed (keep in mind that her degree was Family Studies and Human Development and raising a child in the best way possible was very important to her). We just had our second child and her plan is to continue being a stay-at-home mom until our youngest enters school, at which point she will start working. Unfortunately, despite the logical and biological reasons for her being in this position, she is looked down upon by some people, notably feminists. You would be surprised how quick some people are to visibly show their disdain for the damage we are doing to the feminist movement. Now I know this isn't the prevailing thought among all feminists (we both consider ourselves feminists) and there are many that fully support the position my wife is in but I'm curious what the knowledgeable people here think about this topic. Is there a prevalent school of thought within feminism that either supports or discourages a mother who chooses to stay at home with the kids? And in what direction is this kind of thinking headed? Also, as an aside, my wife works her ass off as a stay-at-home mom. I have no doubt when I get home that she's had a rougher day than me so I really don't understand why some people think stay-at-home moms are lazy.

Okay, then hopefully you agree that the complaint you originally brought up is moot since every group contains those exact same elements. With that thrown aside it sounds like you are on board with the concept of feminism based on what you've said previously.

I'll air out my dirty laundry too. I have had to deal with people very close to me having depression throughout my whole life. It is really fucking frustrating. The part that sucks most is that I am unable to complain or say anything negative because it will immediately be brought to my attention that I don't have any right to complain because I don't suffer from depression. So not only do I have to maintain a positive attitude 100% of the time, I also have to be an emotional punching bag during the lows. Good thing I'm such a happy fucking person. Gormongous, the only advice I can give is to walk away when you find yourself in arguments of the type you mentioned. It is hard to do and I still fail at it sometimes but I have found that the best way to make progress is to just let them shout and say nasty things and do not respond to it. They will cool down later and that is usually the best time to have a calm conversation where they will be more receptive to what you have to say. Over time you can make a lot of progress but that element will most likely never go away entirely. I see no harm in reaching out to someone you care about if you are prepared for any of the negative stuff that might come along with it. I am very sympathetic to what you are going/have gone through and even though it might be unbearable for you at times, people that suffer from depression need good, understanding people in their lives more than anybody. Also, I dreamed last night that I was sneaking out to a nearby bar on the beach to take tequila shots. I could taste the salt on the rim of the glass as I downed each one. I did one after another but I was never able to get drunk.

thestalkinghead, I'm curious why it is you are so fixated on this supposed subset of feminists that you keep citing. Think of it in terms of any other classification or group you might identify with. Feminists, gamers, civil rights advocates, environmentalists, sports fans, left wing supporters, right wing supporters, lumberjack enthusiasts, etc. Every single one of these groups contain different subsets of people. Each group has reasonable people, unreasonable people, optimists, pessimists, intelligent people, stupid people, and dickwads. Just because these groups contain each of these elements doesn't mean that any one of those elements defines that group. If that were true then you could say that humanity is an angry race because there is a subset of people that are very angry. For this reason I think you should let your argument go. I suspect that you identify with other groups or classifications despite the fact that they contain those same fringe elements. You have been given the definition of feminism, which you seem to agree with, and that should really be all you need.

Aren't you technically exempt if you've been here since before this thread was created?

Well now my curiosity is piqued. After playing some more and running around with Laverne I figured I would be able to retrieve the frozen hamster in the future to power the generator that Laverne was able to spot through the window. I can't help but shake the feeling now that there is a little more to it than that.

Thanks for the fruit Justin. Your town is way cooler than mine and your animals were all super nice to me. Unlike my stupid animals who think it's cute to call me a beach bum.
-
I just put a hamster in an ice machine and I have no idea why.

At least theoretical physicists don't have the audacity to proclaim that what they believe is fact. Religious people, however, have a fundamental problem distinguishing between belief and fact.

Cool. I'll probably get on tonight sometime around 9-10 Arizona time, hopefully sooner. I'll add you if I haven't already.

I have seen Coraline way too many times because it is my daughter's favorite movie but there is one thing that always bothered me about it. My understanding is that spider Terri Hatcher created the alternate world and everything in it so she could lure kids in to feed on their souls or whatever. But when Dakota Fanning challenges her, both the other father and the other Wybie try to help her. I thought they were created by spider Terri Hatcher though? This is further evidenced by the fact that other Wybie blows his hand into dust as if to show he was just one of her creations. So what the fuck? Is this just lazy writing or is there some hidden deeper meaning I am missing? Were they really created by her or are they just infused with the lost children's souls or something? I could google this I suppose but I'm more interested in what Thumbs have to say.

Well even though Edward Norton knew he was the same person as Brad Pitt he still couldn't stop Brad Pitt so he shot himself in the face. I think Jesus figured out the same thing and he knew that the only way to stop god's nefarious plans was to be crucified. Then he regained control and we got the mellow version of god that we see now.

Yeah, this always blew my mind too but that's what they expected us to believe. He sent his only son, but his only son was really him. They really tried to sell us on the holy trinity concept with the father, son, and holy spirit all being one. It's shit like this that made me an atheist but it's cool that they were trying to do the whole Fight Club concept long before movies existed.

I can only go off of what I was taught when growing up as a Seventh Day Adventist (read member of a cult) which I'm sure will differ from other religions. We didn't make any distinction between God as a title and God as a name. God was simply God, the holy ghost, heavenly father dude. I was also taught that Jesus Christ was part of the holy trinity and was just as much God as the holy spirit was. So to us Jesus Christ and God were one and the same. God was basically Brad Pitt and Jesus Christ was Edward Norton. So from the perspective I was raised with, saying things like "Jesus Christ" and "Goddamn" was not a violation of the first commandment, it was a violation of the third commandment. His name was supposed to only be used with reverence and uttering it out of frustration or using it as a common expression in that manner was considered to be using it in vain. But it still never said anything about "fuck".
