  1. That sounds pretty awesome. I hope this co-op mode also includes the ability for a fat guy to spew out a skinny guy. Then the skinny guy can turn the fat guy into a cookie and eat him. Then the more powerful skinny guy can turn his other opponents into candy and eat them. Then the guys he ate can all fight their way through the skinny guy's innards. Yeah, I want the Kinect to do that.
  2. Batman Origins

I hope you can fall down a goddamn well and then have to eat a goddamn bat to survive. Then there will be a goddamn genetic mutation and you will become... Spiderman.
  3. I still want to see something with proper head tracking. I've seen some cool videos of programs people created to implement head tracking with basic geometric objects and the 3d effect was pretty nice. As far as I know though, no games have been made to take advantage of that capability.
  4. GTA ONLINE

I hope to pick this up within the next few weeks but I'm torn between 360 and PS3 versions. Is everyone here playing on PS3? If so, that is what I'll probably get so I have some decent people to play with online. I've heard some pretty terrible things about playing online with random people in this game so I am hoping to avoid that if possible.
  5. I Had A Random Thought...

    Awesome story.
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

It was pretty substantial. The best servers consistently made much more money than the worst (ballpark estimate of around 50% more money than the worst). The only exception to that rule was if the terrible server was an attractive female, something I find disgusting but was true nonetheless. Keep in mind I am just citing my own experience working at the particular Applebee's I was at so I'm sure what I'm saying might not apply equally everywhere. Also, despite what I'm saying about tipping at a restaurant, I am actually pretty annoyed by having to tip at so many other places. In a perfect world employers would pay their employees enough to motivate them to do a better job rather than putting the onus on the customer. I'll give that link a read.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

There might be some truth to what you say but I kind of have to disagree. I worked for years at Applebee's and if I ever had repeat customers that I knew tipped well you bet your ass I was on top of everything. Maybe it is just a different kind of culture here in certain states but there is an expectation that providing better service nets better tips, and giving better tips encourages better service. Also, a good server that knows what they are doing can do quite a bit to make things easier for the kitchen. It's probably also worth mentioning that when I worked at Applebee's servers only made $2.13 per hour despite the minimum wage being $5.15 per hour. This is because it is expected that tips combined with the low hourly rate will exceed the minimum wage. With no real hourly wage to count on there is quite a bit of motivation to provide good service. In places where servers make a decent base hourly rate I would agree that there is less of a correlation between higher tips and better service.

Man you guys are too kind. I feel super lucky to be able to share all of this with people here.
  9. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

Oh yeah, I forgot about that little incident. He did seem a little overly nice in this game, probably just to hide the fact that he is a sexual predator.
  10. True Game Endings

Bioshock Infinite I've already said this in the completed games thread but I'll repeat it here:

Day of the Tentacle Really fucking good game. Probably in my top ten of all time.
  12. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

Day of the Tentacle completed! Total play time was around 11 hours and I completed it without any hints besides the few vague-ish ones that people posted here. It turns out I was overlooking two fairly obvious things. First, I discovered that I could "use" the squeaky mattress with the other one to switch them out, distract the cat from further away, and take the toy mouse. I can't believe I hadn't tried that yet especially considering that option was right there from the start. From there, I sent the toy mouse to Laverne and was stuck again for a few minutes when the cat wouldn't take it. Luckily I quickly noticed that I could interact with the fence and after trying the white out on it, the cat popped out from underneath and got a nice skunk stripe down its back. Then after it jumped on the roof I used the toy mouse to lure it down and then released the cat in the Edisons' kennel. Once the Edisons took off I was free to enter Dr. Fred's old lab and plugged the extension cord into the machine. The only problem was that hamster I was still missing. The second thing I overlooked was exactly what SecretAsianMan pointed out (and I swear I didn't see your post until this morning). I had interacted with that ice machine as Bernard and Laverne in every way I thought possible but I somehow stupidly forgot to "Look At" it with Laverne. As soon as I did this the hamster appeared, I thawed him out with the microwave, put a sweater on him, and put him on the hamster treadmill. Laverne was then punched by a spring loaded boxing glove and the hamster ran into the mouse hole. Luckily I had made that vacuum appear earlier so I sucked him back out, threw him back on the treadmill, and finally got to see Laverne, Hoagie and Bernard reunited. The last segment was pretty easy and hilarous. Once I saw that old purple tentacle could shrink me I knew I would probably need to get shrunk and go through that mouse hole between green tentacle's room and the suicidal conventioneer's room to pick up the bowling ball (since Hoagie would be strong enough to do that). As soon as that happened I ran down to the lab and threw the bowling ball at all the purple tentacles. Then after old purple tentacle showed up and shrunk me again I talked to him for awhile and finally convinced him to shrink Dr. Fred. This backfired and the beam reflected off his head mirror shrinking old purple instead. The game then concluded with old purple getting mailed off, the machine getting shut off, and everything returning to normal. And in true cartoon fashion, the kids found out they weren't really fused together but were just stuck in one outfit together. So this game was really amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it and I thought just about every puzzle was really well designed. Almost every discovery made and every puzzle solved left me feeling satisfied. In my opinion, there were only two parts that were kind of frustrating and could have maybe been designed a bit better: having to close the door to get the keys and having to "look at" the ice cooler to make the frozen hamster appear. It's a super minor complaint in an otherwise superbly designed game. Walking away from this game I think the thing that impressed me the most was the writing and voice acting. Every character was voiced perfectly and every line of dialog was just dripping with creativity. And it is just amazing how they managed to design virtually every puzzle to fit perfectly within the theme of the game. I think I can confidently say that this game blew my mind.
  13. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

Well shit, I guess if Bernard could pick up the mummy to put him on the bed then Hoagie is probably more than capable of toting him around.
  14. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

I played some more last night and I'm so close now. I got the mummy up and through the window, painted his bandages red to trick the IRS guys into thinking he was Dr. Fred, and got Dr. Fred out of there. Then I used the funnel and gave him some coffee to wake him up. After a little conversation I was able to trick him into signing the contract, mailed it out with Hoagie, and ordered the diamond. So I just have to figure out what I need to do with Laverne now. Unused items I have left are gum, white out, a hammer, a trophy (which only Laverne can use/give), a tiny sweater, and I think that's it. Of course, there is always the possibility that some of my other items need to be used again but for now I am focusing on the unused ones. Areas of interest that I haven't had too many interactions with are the attic with the mouse toy and cat, the pulley on the roof in the past, the lobby in the past with the mummy and his sweet hat, the ice machine in the present with the hamster, the ice machine in the future without the hamster, the room with the medula oblongator machine and microwave in the future, the room with purple tentacle in the future, the room with the Edisons in the future, and the cat stuck under the fence. I've tried everything I can with the squeaky bed to distract the cat but I am unable to get him away from the mouse for long enough. I'm starting to think that based on what happened with the mummy in the present I should maybe try to hoist the past mummy up into the attic and onto the bed so he can distract the cat. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any rope that I can use though. The rope that Bernard used seems to be gone and I can't send Laverne's extension cord back to use that. I'm going to keep pondering this though because it seems like the most likely solution considering the mummy has come into play in both other time periods and that pulley is still sitting there unused. I also still haven't had any luck freeing the Edisons. I can't fuck with their cards and none of them will take anything. The only other thing I can think to try with the hamster is to maybe get Ed involved somehow. I haven't tried giving him the tiny sweater yet. Maybe he will take it to use for his hamster and something magical will happen. I know it's a stretch but I'm totally stuck right now.
  15. Life

I can agree with most of that but that list changes quite a bit if you are in a relationship, married, or have kids. Then, not only are you trying to find your own happiness balance but also making sure that what makes you happy isn't at odds with what makes your loved ones happy. Ideally there is a lot of overlap there but there is always going to be some compromise. Then you have to consider your future happiness as well. So to reach that balance sometimes it might be worth it to take that mundane job that might end up leaving you happier later in life than if you took that fun job that doesn't pay as well or doesn't have a good long term outlook. Long story short, I think having some plan to make sure you can continue to be happy in the future is important. But I agree that too many people focus too much of their life planning for the future and then wake up one day and see the crypt keeper in the mirror when they finally decide they are ready to enjoy the "future" they had been planning for.
  16. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

I didn't notice. I'll have to stare at that cat butthole some more. If that is what naysayers say then I could not disagree more with their perspective. I mean sure, you're pointing and clicking to do things but the interactivity of the environments combined with the verbs and items make it just as interactive as any other game in my opinion.
  17. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

I look forward to going back and reading all of those posts after I finish. I just can't bring myself to click on any of those spoilers yet since progress has been pretty steady and I haven't been stuck for too long yet. Also, last night I made a couple more key discoveries. I think I'm very close to finishing the game now. When I started playing last night, I wrote down a list of all unused items I had in my inventory and then mentally went through all of the areas in the game that I hadn't had any real interactions with yet. I started fooling around and ended up focusing on the textbook with Hoagie. I had already had him read it to pretty much everyone and I remembered how they all told me how boring it was and how it was going to put them to sleep. However, I hadn't yet tried it on the horse and I thought maybe I was supposed to read it to him to impress him since he had been pretty condescending before and implied that I was stupid. So I started reading it to him which instead caused him to fall asleep and put his dentures in the glass. Once I picked them up I knew those had to be the teeth I needed for Laverne so I sent them straight to her and switched back to the future. With Laverne I put the horse dentures on the mummy and finally won the beauty competition which netted me a trophy and dinner certificate. From my previous interactions I knew the dinner certificate would most likely be for the tentacle guarding the Edisons and after giving it to him he took off leaving the Edisons unguarded. I turned off the force field and tried to free them but they refused to leave because they knew they would get caught by the tentacle guarding the clock. I didn't see any way to make further progress with Laverne at this point so I switched back to Bernard. Shortly after switching to Bernard I made my second big discovery. I toiled for a little bit at first and then focused on the suicidal conventioneer guy. I had already tried to use several items on him before but since he seemed to be too far away I had convinced myself that I would somehow need to shrink Bernard to get in there. Then I went back over my list of unused items and realized I hadn't tried that letter that Hoagie had talking about the recipient being a genius and that they should come to Boston immediately. So I sent that over to Bernard and was finally able to trick the suicidal guy into taking off by giving him the letter (I hope he doesn't kill himself when he gets there and realizes it was a hoax). Now that I had access to the room I finally picked up the flag gun and immediately went down to the other conventioneer guy. I wasn't able to use it on him but I found that I was able to distract the guy and exchange the flag gun for the lighter gun he kept using on me. Then I talked to him again and was able to get one one of his exploding cigars without it blowing up in my face. I then sent these items back to Hoagie since I thought maybe I could use the lighter gun to burn the log that Jefferson was holding on to. As Hoagie I found that I couldn't use the lighter gun on the log. However, the game did hint that I should probably use it with the exploding cigar so I gave it a shot with each of the founding fathers. I didn't have any luck with Hancock or Jefferson but Washington was a different story (it should have been obvious since he was already smoking a cigar). Once I gave it to him and lit it, his face imploded and his dentures disappeared into the ether. He asked me to find them so I gave him the chattering teeth instead which tricked Hancock and Jefferson into thinking he was cold and prompted them to start a fire. With the fire started, I picked up Hancock's blanket and had a little chat with him. We talked about the canary for a bit and based on the conversation it seemed like I would need to block the chimney to force the "fire alarm" to go off. So I ran up there, threw the blanket over the chimney, and got to see the founding fathers jump out of the window. With the room clear I went back down and found that I could pick up the gold plated feather pen that Jefferson had prevented me from grabbing before. Since it had gold on it I took it back down to Red who finally made my battery. Once the battery was done I picked it up and tried to plug it into my time traveling toilet but found that it needed to be charged. So I ran over to Ben Franklin, put it in the kite pocket, and threw the kite in the air which was then hit by lightning. This left me with a charged battery that I could finally plug in to the toilet. With pretty much everything done in the past (except the mouse toy and mailing contract parts) I switched back to Bernard again. Once I was back in control of Bernard I started running through each area again. Once I made it to the attic I found that the IRS guys were in there doing paperwork and Dr. Fred was locked in the adjacent room. So I went down to the fireplace, climbed up to the roof, and went through the window to get to him. I saw that he was tied up so I picked up the rope that had him secured. At this point I figured I had found the solution to my contract signing problem. All I would need to do was wake him up and get him to sign the contract so Hoagie could mail it. So I tried putting the funnel in his mouth to give him the coffee I had but it didn't work. I wasn't sure what to do to wake him up at this point but I was pretty sure I knew what to do with the rope so I went back out the window and successfully used it on the pulley. It was late at this point so I had to stop playing. I think I am really close to the end now. I'm guessing I need to use the pulley to hoist up the bird bath which might be able to break one of the windows and wake Dr. Fred up. With him awake, he can sign the contract, Hoagie can mail it, and I can use the money to order the diamond and power up the time machine. With Laverne I still need to find some way to convince the Edisons to leave which will hopefully cause the tentacle guard to leave his post and give me access to the old lab. Then, maybe Hoagie can use the rope with the pulley in the past to rig something up with the squeaky bed to distract the cat so I can get that mouse toy. I think Laverne will be able to use the toy to distract the future cat and then somehow, between distracting the cat and powering up the machine, that frozen hamster will magically appear and I can thaw him out with the microwave to run the hamster wheel. I think that vacuum will also come into play at some point during this process.
  18. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

Some more good progress made the other night. I sent a bunch of unused shit to Hoagie and discovered that I could use the vacuum cleaner flier in the suggestion box to make a vacuum cleaner appear in the future (although I can't get to it yet with Laverne). I also discovered that I could give the Help Wanted sign to Red to get the lab coat which I was then able to give to Ben Franklin so he could make a new kite. While I was in Red's lab I noticed that I had overlooked the left handed hammer so I picked that up and exchanged it for the right handed hammer that one of the twins was using. That caused him to fuck up the statue and then the twins traded places causing the statue in Bernard's time to be flipped. With Bernard I was finally able to push Edna out of the room and was able to record the footage of Dr. Fred opening up the safe. After slowing it down I was able to see the combination and finally got the contract out of the safe. It was too late to mail it so I sent it back to Hoagie and threw the stamp on it. Unfortunately it still needed to be signed so I was unable to send it out and am still trying to figure out how to get the signature filled out. I think I'm also still at the same point with Laverne as I was before. With these recent discoveries I have a few new thoughts for how I need to progress now. First, I need to find a small metal object to attach to the kite so Hoagie can help Ben Franklin. I've tried the fork and scalpel but neither worked so I assume I don't have what I need just yet. Next, I need to figure out how to get the contract signed so I can mail it, get a bunch of money, and order the diamond. Maybe I need to get Red or Zed or someone else to sign it and then use the white out to alter the signature to read "Fred" before mailing it. Then I still need to figure out how to stop the teeth from chattering and how to get the toy mouse with Hoagie so he can send it to Laverne. I also need to figure out where my frozen hamster is and what I can do with that stupid horse (I even tried using white out on his yellow teeth but cartoon logic failed me there). And I also started messing around with that machine containing the three holes. I'm starting to wonder if maybe I am supposed to use the vacuum with those somehow.

I used that some and it was pretty cool but once I got chained electricity it seemed most efficient to shock half a dozen guys and just take pot shots at them. Plus I could get a few more uses out of that then crow thingy. I think I'll eventually play through again on hard or 1999 mode to see if the combat gets more interesting.
  21. Recently completed video games

I recently completed Bioshock Infinite. Overall I really liked it. I enjoyed the story and felt that it was really well done for the most part. I also think they did a really good job with Elizabeth and I like how they depicted her changing throughout the game as shit went down. What impressed me the most though were the visuals and the sound design. With the graphics cranked up this game is gorgeous and I often found myself staring at all of the scenery for minutes at a time. And I never got tired of Elizabeth throwing coins at me. That little segment just tickled my senses every time. For the first 2/3rds of the game I enjoyed the combat and was having fun with it but by the end it lost it's luster for me. I found that I was pretty much just using shock jockey on everything and taking dudes out with my carbine. I did experiment some with the other vigors but none seemed as effective as shock jockey so by the end of the game I was pretty much just spamming that and shooting dudes. Also, the looting aspect really wore me out. I have a compulsive need to not miss anything and having to search every goddamn trash can, purse, desk, body, and container got really old really fast. It was bad enough for me that it dragged the whole experience down a notch. I dreaded new areas because of all the looting I knew I would need to do. Even though I really enjoyed the story in this game there was one part that kind of bothered me: The most emotionally impactful experience of the game for me was when I happened upon a few dead bodies lying on top of a pile of burning rubble. They were just innocent civilians that had been massacred and hastily tossed into the pile. As I examined the pile I noticed a young woman in a blue dress amongst the bodies. I leaned down to shut her eyelids and that's when I noticed the hot dog sticking out of her pocket. I ate the hot dog.

Yeah, I'm not too fond of puzzles where they hide something behind a door. Making you look in a stupid place doesn't leave you very satisfied when you do solve it.

  25. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

Made some more good progress last night. I was stuck for a bit when I started playing and eventually decided I should start going into rooms and closing doors to see if there was anything on the other side (thanks MI2). Sure enough, I found some keys in the door with the sleeping conventioneer. I looked around for a lock and after I couldn't find one I remembered the thief trying to break into the car outside. So I went out there and gave him the keys since Bernard was already gullible enough to think that was the thief's car and ended up getting his crowbar in exchange. With the crowbar, I was able to pry the dime/gum off the floor and was able to get the sweater from under the sleeping conventioneer by shaking the guy off the bed. Unfortunately I wasn't able to send the sweater back through the toilet but after toiling some more I discovered that I could put it in the dryer. Since I didn't have any quarters to start the dryer I went around to each device that took change and eventually discovered that I could use the crowbar to get a mountain of quarters from the snack machine. I then put every single quarter into the dryer and switched over to Laverne. As Laverne I made several discoveries. First, I grabbed the tiny sweater from the dryer. Then I found that I could use the fork to make the mummy's hair look better. Unfortunately, Harold still seemed to be the favorite and based on my interactions the game seemed to hint to me that I should try to get Harold out of the running. So I started trying to screw with him and before long I discovered that I could put the fake barf on the floor in front of him and trick the tentacle doctor into thinking Harold was sick. With him gone and with the mummy having some sweet hair and an awesome laugh, I just need to figure out how to get the teeth to stop chattering (the gum didn't work). I explored some more and also found that I could use the can opener on the time capsule. I saw that the wine had turned to vinegar and sent that back to Hoagie so he could give it to Red. I didn't really figure anything else out with Hoagie besides giving the vinegar to Red. All I need for the battery now is gold. I tried a few more things and then stopped around this point. So now I'm not sure how to get the teeth to stop chattering. Hopefully I'll get an item I need for it eventually. I'm also not sure where the tiny sweater comes into play. I'm still pretty sure I'll be able to send the shrink ray back to Bernard at some point so I'll either need to use the tiny sweater on him or maybe I need to put it on my freezing hamster (again, where the fuck is that hamster in the future?). I still need to figure out how to distract Edna, either by giving her coffee since she only drinks decaf or by doing something to the statue. I also need to figure out what is up with the talking horse and how I am supposed to interact with the Edison twins in the past. I can't move when I pick up the hammer so there is something I am missing there. Another thing that stands out is the gun cigar lighter that I can't pick up yet. Maybe I need to get the flag gun from the depressed guy, use that to distract the cigar salesman, take the lighter gun, and use that with Hoagie to burn something so Hancock isn't freezing. Also, there's still the cat with the mouse toy and the item Ben Franklin needs.
