  1. I Had A Random Thought...

    You make a good argument.
  2. I Had A Random Thought...

Hmmm, maybe we should have a "Random Argument" thread. The best thread ever. Seriously though, these arguments are fun.
  3. I Had A Random Thought...

One thing this argument highlights is how complicated this shit really is. I think Twig made a good point about the possibility that someone could always be offended by something that is said. I mean, we've all probably inadvertently offended somebody at some point with what we might think are innocent words. But that's just a part of social interaction. It's not always cut and dry and with each situation we have to determine whether the offense taken is justified enough to convince us to not speak a certain way. For example, I still choose to use the word "retarded" even though some people find it offensive. I don't know why but in that case I decided that I'd rather use that word and risk offending someone then not use it at all. This is probably wrong on my part but somehow through 28 years of social interactions I have reasoned that it just isn't that big of a deal. That may make me a shithead but I like to think that most people go through this same decision making process. Edit: And when I say I continue to use terms that are offensive I think its worth mentioning that I still adjust the way I speak temporarily if I know someone will be offended by it. Hence the moratorium on me talking about my dong.
  4. I love every one of you

I think it's exactly what I think. Metal Gear Solid is pretty good but I've only finished MGS4. I like the part where Raiden breakdances with those robot dudes and then fights that vampire dude. Wait, maybe this isn't what I think.
  5. I Had A Random Thought...

I think it depends on the thought. If I had constant horrible thoughts that, if acted upon, would be considered immoral then I think it would behoove me to evaluate myself to understand why I think those thoughts and how I might stop myself from thinking those thoughts in the future. I figure that any bad thoughts I have are due to a deficiency or error in my thought process anyways so I might as well just hold myself accountable for it, accept that I am flawed, and try to dive in to find the reason and correct it. Usually easier said than done.
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

I don't think there is anything necessarily wrong with being more physically attracted to certain types of people. I bet most people have some preference one way or another whether they like blondes, redheads, Asians, African Americans, people with accents, etc. But yeah, if there is some fetish driving that attraction then it definitely becomes a little creepy. On another somewhat related note, at what point does it become immoral or wrong to say certain things? If I am just in a room by myself and a series of words come out of my mouth that would normally be deemed offensive in the presence of other people, is there anything wrong with saying it? How about if it is only me and one other person who thinks exactly like me in a room and I utter those same words? What about if it is me and 50 people who think exactly like me? Does it make a difference if whatever horrible thing I am saying reflects how I actually feel? Growing up in small towns I definitely developed some fucked up viewpoints as a kid and would freely utter things that were sexist, homophobic, and racist. It is weird to think back though because at the time I didn't think there was anything wrong with saying those things and neither did anyone I came into contact with. It was only after I moved to a larger city and became exposed to different types of people that I gained a better sense of why it was wrong to say those things. I'm not really sure what point I'm even trying to make with this post. I guess I'm just saying that knowing what is and isn't appropriate to say can be some complicated shit sometimes.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

Maybe the fact that it ended with "Their women are cute" gave the whole exchange a weird tone, I dunno.
  8. I Had A Random Thought...

After re-reading that exchange, yeah, that came across in a weirdly uncomfortable way.
  9. PSN ID exchange

xXZeusthecatXx Finally got around to creating a new id so feel free to add me.
  10. Is it not feasible for someone to just run a server on their own PC and use Hamachi? When my friend and I were playing regularly I ran our server on the same PC I was playing on and never experienced any issues. And Hamachi gave us the vpn we needed for up to 5 users for free.
  11. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

After being stuck at the end for awhile pressing Esc made them exit the ride and come back outside. At this point Max hinted that I didn't have what I needed yet to solve whatever puzzle was in there.
  12. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

I made a tiny bit of progress last night. First, I picked up a cup inside the tent and asked the siamese twin guys some questions. Then I took a ride on the cyclone machine which caused me to lose all my items. I then had to go pick my items up from the lost and found and ended up with a magnet in addition to the other stuff I already had. I also had Max hit the the bell thingy which didn't seem to do anything. After doing that stuff I got stuck in a very stupid way. I went into the love tunnel and rode to the end at which point the boat stopped and I didn't see any way to make it move forward or get out of the boat. I tried every item I had on everything in the area and just could not figure out how to proceed. I was so desperate I even played a game of Battleship thinking that if I beat Max something would happen that would allow me to move forward. After about 45 minutes of being stuck I started to think that maybe there was a glitch or something and was on the verge of loading an earlier save when I happened to hit the escape key. It should have clicked earlier considering I had to hit 'Esc' to get out of the Battleship game but I just never would have thought that 'Esc' had any use in the regular environments. So I am pretty fucking retarded. Maybe I should read up some more on the controls to avoid this in the future.
  13. Building a home theater...

I have been super happy with my surround sound setup. Yamaha 7.2 receiver - ~$500 Set of 5 Klipsch speakers and a Klipsch subwoofer - ~$550 Set of 2 Polk bookshelf speakers (front left and front right speakers) - ~$200 If you're looking for a recommendation on just speakers I would go with Klipsch.
  14. I Had A Random Thought...

Oh god! I don't think I can un-think that. And now my balls hurt.
  15. Idle Thumbs 129: A Reminder

I have to disagree with this. First, even if the majority of people that watch a Let's Play don't buy the game, that doesn't mean that they would have bought the game had there been no Let's Play for it. I am highly doubtful that the majority of people watching these use it as a substitute for actually playing the game anyways. And I am sure there are still plenty of people that never watch them to begin with so even if this was the case you are talking about a fraction of the subset of people that watch Let's Plays. Second, I'm not sure why you think it is foolish to make a narrative driven game considering some of the biggest and most talked about games over the last few years have been narrative driven (Bioshock Infinite, Last of Us, Walking Dead, Uncharted games, etc.). There is just no realistic basis for claiming that narrative driven games will die or should die.
  16. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

Thanks for the tip! You guys definitely make a good point about the increased screen real estate with the "cycle through" system. The main gripe I have about it now that I think about it some more is that it seems to be designed around recollection rather than recognition. I feel like it falls short compared to the previous system (at least until the player becomes familiar with the mechanics) because several of the icons don't quite represent the actions they perform in an obvious enough way. Overall it's a minor complaint though and I think I've played enough to get used to it, which kind of makes it a moot point I guess.
  17. Snot another Kickstarter: Boogerman 20th Anniversary?

I must be a man baby for never growing out of this type of humor.
  18. FCC Complaints About The Simpsons

Yeah, I read that one too and had to assume that person has been doing large quantities of acid for a really long time.
  19. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

Ah, I see what you mean. I think the main reason I got those so quickly is that I was still getting used to the new controls and was trying every action on everything in the environment to understand what verbs they all represented.. When I selected the mouth icon it showed an open mouth when I hovered over the cat so I clicked. So that one just came down to sheer luck and being overly thorough.
  20. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

Probably took about 5-10 minutes. There wasn't really anything else to do there so I figured I'd try using each item I had and since I had the assignment papers I got through pretty quickly.
  21. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

I started Sam and Max Hit the Road So far I've played past the intro scene, went to a restaurant/convenience store type place, and went to a carnival. Nothing too crazy has happened yet, I've just poked around the environments, picked up a number of items, and managed to convince the fire breathing carnival guy to let me into the tent. Before heading out I also got a bunch of money from the mouse hole which I then used to purchase a few things at the convenience store place. I'm liking this game so far. The writing and voice acting are both pretty good and it seems like there is a touch of dark humor that I wasn't expecting from such a cheerful looking game. The only complaint I have so far is the interface. I really don't like it. I feel like the way verbs and items worked in previous games conveyed everything very clearly and this new system is just unnecessarily confusing. Maybe it will grow on me as I continue to get used to it.
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

I had a random thought within a random thought. I was thinking about how smart dolphins were and how it is pretty amazing that they are capable of using tools. Then I started thinking that maybe that isn't necessarily a good thing because if they can use tools then they could be capable of first degree murder. Then I thought about posting that thought here but stopped myself when I started wondering if someone else had posted that same thought on the internet before. If someone had thought the same thing as me and posted it on the internet then someone here would surely see my post, think I was poaching someone else's idea, and provide me a link to the original poster making me feel like an idiot. But by posting my original thought along with the thought that I thought that made me worry about posting what I thought I hope to mitigate that risk. Also, I am now fantasizing about a dolphin plotting to murder its partner's lover. Dolphins are jealous creatures in my mind.
  23. Idle Thumbs 128: Dear Mom

Ninja Turtles must have been responsible for at least 50% of child injuries during the early 90's. When I was 7 years old, my friend and I were playing Ninja Turtles (and by playing Ninja Turtles I mean we dressed up like Ninja Turtles and did karate moves on each other) and I somehow managed to knock my two front teeth out on the back of his ear. Before I even realized what had happened he picked up my teeth and ran into the living room where our parents were, screaming "Two teeth, two teeth!" before slamming them onto the table. Everyone thought they were his teeth at first until I came out of the room with blood pouring out of my mouth. This was also when I realized whose teeth had been knocked out. Luckily they were still my baby teeth but it still took over a year for my new teeth to grow in.
  24. Intoxicated:

The best thing about the whole drunk thing is falling asleep during a loading screen and then waking up, convincing yourself it won't happen again, and then falling back asleep at the next loading screen.
  25. Favorite Euphemisms

One of my favorite euphemisms is when mentally handicapped people are referred to as "special". Especially when you then have to explain to a child why little Timmy is special and they aren't.
