That seems like a pointless comparison to make. As other people have already pointed out, games are about more than just the quality of the story contained within. A world that you are experiencing and interacting with doesn't need to have the same story characteristics as a book or movie for it to be genuinely moving. I have been emotionally affected by plenty of games that don't have anything resembling a book-quality story because the experience of being in the world and experiencing what it has to offer doesn't necessitate that type of storytelling.

After another 30 minutes of toiling I finally figured out how to get into the junk yard. It turns out I needed to put the lock on the door to prevent it from opening when the chain is pulled and then use the chain to climb up the wall. I thought I had tried that already but I was obviously mistaken. After making my way through the junk yard I came to the area with the dog and was able to lure him into a car with the meat. Then I got stuck again for a little while trying to figure out what I was supposed to do before discovering that I could use the junk yard magnet thing to pick up the cars. So I stacked up some of the cars and suspended the car with the dog above the ground but wasn't able to figure out what I was supposed to do next before I had to go to bed. I'm guessing that I need to go around and pick up all of the cars in that area to uncover the forks. I think they will either be under one of the cars or I will need to drop the cars from higher up to smash them or something. From what I can tell I'm not able to really interact with any of the cars in a meaningful way and unless the dog is suspended he will try to murder my ass whenever I do anything in that area. I'm also hoping that I find something in the junkyard that will help me get to the top of the gas tower without those assholes shooting me down. I tried a few more times last night and I don't see how I can get up there with what I currently have. It seems that once I set off the alarm I can either try to climb the tower or run away and once the helicopter shows up my interactions are frozen until it leaves again, at which point the alarm is reset. So I'm definitely struggling a bit more with this game. I still really like it but I'm surprised that it has had me stumped for so long this early on in the game.

Agreed.

I guess the way I look at it is that all that time spent manually doing low level math that you learned in 3rd grade would be better spent focusing on more of the high level stuff. I think by the time we reach calculus we've all done enough addition, subtraction, multiplication and division that there is very little added value in having to continue doing that manually. All that being said I don't think I ever used any of the high level capabilities of my graphing calculator after precalc. A basic scientific calculator pretty much had all the functionality that anyone needed at that point. So yeah, video games.

I wonder if curiosity ever got the better of Jake and he touched his own poop wearing a glove.

Blue Dragon!! I am one of the few people that loved that fucking game. Along with Lost Odyssey which I mentioned elsewhere.

I'm surprised to hear of college professors not allowing calculators in their math classes. Does that mean people had to look up sine and cosine values in a table and manually do all of the basic math stuff when solving a differential equation? That sounds heinous. Edit: forgot to quote your post elmuerte.

I built my unassuming house just south of the Thumb City walls. There totally aren't any secret passages. I also built a small, somewhat disguised dirt shack in the swamps just to the north of the city walls with a stairway all the way down to a few blocks above bedrock level. So if you ever need to mine for gold, diamond, or redstone feel free to go down there and continue tunneling forward. It should be at the optimal level for those rarer elements to exist. I also have two big chests full of cobblestone from mining all this stuff out so if you need any to make stone bricks or anything let me know. I might also be willing to part with limited quantities of iron/coal/redstone but I'm currently saving those up to make a big automated food harvester. If anyone has a preference for where I should put the food harvester let me know. I hope to use hoppers and a basic minecart system to automatically transport food to the city on a regular basis. Also, as I was tunneling down I came across a giant underground ravine full of danger and some sweet loot. Aiieve joined me in clearing it out and we made out with a ton of iron, coal, and redstone. We also came across a dungeon containing some music discs and name tags so that was sweet too. And in typical Minecraft fashion we got cocky near the end and tried to move on to another area and nearly got killed by a swarm of 3 baby zombies and a skeleton. Needless to say we immediately went back to the surface after escaping that one so as not to lose all of our hard earned shit. -
Just remember, that job interview is merely being simulated by your brain. As is this post.

I have a video game dilemma right now. I recently started GTAV which is awesome and a ton of fun. Then I joined Squid Division's Minecraft server which sucked me back into that amazing game. And then last night I started Full Throttle which is also pretty damn cool. So now when I have time to play I am faced with a gut wrenching decision. I want to play them all but fucking Minecraft, which has already devoured hundreds of hours of my time, keeps winning out. It's to the point where I feel guilty whenever I play it because I am neglecting other awesome games. And then I feel even guiltier that this is the kind of shit I stress about when there are starving children all over the world.

So I'm a little over an hour in and am stuck already. I went through the intro, got my keys from the bartender and took off to try to warn the Polecats of the impending ambush. Unfortunately the front tire came off and I crashed. Luckily someone came and rescued me and brought me to a lady named Mo who said she could repair my bike if I brought her the stuff she needed. I managed to get her welding torch back by kicking some asshole's door down after he wouldn't let me in but that's about the extent of my progress. I still need to get the forks and the gas. There is one area with a big door that is opened by pulling a nearby chain but I have no apparent way to get the door to stay open long enough for me to get through. Then there is an area with a ladder that sets off an alarm every time I touch it which causes some douches in a helicopter to come rain bullets on me. My inventory is pretty limited so far and the items I have don't seem to be helping so I am either missing a crucial item or there is some interaction I missed somewhere. I am really liking this game so far. The tone is much more serious then I expected but it seems to have a pretty good story and some cool characters and the music is pretty awesome too. I especially like the music in Mo's garage.

I can't wait to get hit in the face by an iron. -
Glad to hear other people appreciate it too. It's become my daughter's favorite movie and I find myself getting into it every time she puts it on.

Am I stupid for thinking Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs is kind of an awesome movie?

Fuck, I don't know if I can resist the Minecraft temptation any longer. Can I get whitelisted? I think my Minecraft name is xXZeusthecatXx. -
There's always those fabric ceiling swings. Just don't mistakenly get a sex swing. Your colon may not like that too much.

Already done. The guys that delivered the furniture? Those were my guys.

I started this the other night and so far I am really impressed by it and am having a blast. The attention to detail is astounding and the traffic and pedestrian AI seems really solid (especially compared to Saint's Row 2 which I just finished). The controls are a little weird at first but I'm starting to get used to them so I don't think it'll bother me too much. The fact that I just keep wandering off to check out random stuff and stopping my car in the middle of traffic to just watch what is going on around me is a testament to how believable they made this world. There are, however, a couple things that bother me just a little bit. One is that there are no street signs showing the name of each street. Maybe it's because they would be too hard to read with the given resolution or maybe it would have been too much work to name every single street in the city but I was really hoping I would be able to just drive around and find my destination by learning the street names and knowing what street I would be approaching. The other issue I have is the way the traffic signals work; and this is probably only because I work on traffic management software. It could be that the way signals cycle in LA is different than other cities but it kind of bothered me that they didn't have coordinated phases (i.e. NB and SB through lanes being green at the same time). I waited at a light for awhile and watched each lane of travel get it's own individual green before finally coming around to the lane of travel I was in. I would be curious to know if they did any research on how traffic signals operate in the real world or if their implementation was based purely on assumption or observation.

I'm thinking I probably will go through the Telltale games after I finish these. Do they stick pretty close to the spirit of the LucasArts games and have similar puzzle design?

Idle Thumbs 133: Johann's Baton
Zeusthecat replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Babe Ruth once visited me in a dream and told me legends never die. So I'm pretty sure you guys are basically immortal. Also, when I woke up from this dream I bought a sweet new pair of shoes and got my friend's baseball back from a giant dog. That dog bit me in the ass and I had to get 13 stitches. -
Idle Thumbs 133: Johann's Baton
Zeusthecat replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I've recently been re-reading the early Idle Thumbs episodes and this cast has been fantastically reminiscent of those episodes except for one thing - everyone sounds way more tired then they used to. It's not just Steve. Also, if Idle Thumbs was food, Steve would be the secret sauce.
