Lately, when we put a show on for our son, he has been insisting on The Lion King or Mr. Peabody and Sherman every single time. I have seen the intro to those two movies now a disgusting amount of times. And The Circle Of Life has been running through my head in a loop for days now. Damn those kids movies and their catchy tunes that burn into your brain and never ever leave.

I think I'm going to use this thread to start posting random social media stuff that really irritates me and makes me depressed about the future of our species. http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/story/28368768/2015/03/11/maricopa-has-a-town-landmark-walmart-golden-van This was on every local news station last night and they spent more time covering this extremely stupid thing than they spent on any other story. I am completely baffled by this and will never understand how this type of shit becomes a 'thing'.

That's fair. I always think of it as part of Star Road but I guess you are technically teleported to the Special Levels from that last star that opens up when you get the secret exit in each of the other star road levels. The Cheese Bridge one is hard at first but once you figure out where you need to drop down so that you can avoid the saws and get under the first goal post, it is pretty easy to repeat consistently. Tubular is just a pain in the ass every fucking time.

To clarify, the sense of style goes a really long way for me. There are a decent number of episodes that I thought were really fantastic thanks to how well the action scenes came together. And the music complements everything pretty well too. The only part of the story that I really enjoy is just how shitty Mugen and Jin are. They make for some pretty entertaining characters and I'm glad that they never seem to try to paint them as 'good'. They are just really violent shitheads.

I finished Cowboy Bebop and it was really good. Not my favorite anime but still really enjoyable to watch. Last weekend I started Samurai Champloo and have 5 or 6 episodes left as of today. I'm not sure how I feel about this one. The soundtrack is pretty good and I really enjoy the fight scenes but I haven't found the story terribly compelling. Mugen and Jin are pretty "interesting characters with mysterious pasts" but I really don't understand what possible motivation they would have for going after the Sunflower Samurai with Fuu. Maybe they just have nothing better to do? The other thing that kind of bothers me about the show is how a lot of the female characters are handled. Maybe there is some deeper thing I am missing but it seems like most of the female characters are portrayed as helpless and weak and constantly being sexually abused. It just seems like there is a bit too much of that. Although, I was happy to see So yeah, I like how stylish this show is and a lot of the action sequences but it's not terribly compelling beyond that.

I wonder what Flavor Flav thinks of the iWatch? For that matter, I think they missed a golden opportunity by not announcing the iWatch Flavor Flav edition.

Pretty much exactly how I feel. If I want a fancy high tech watch I'll just go back to my old calculator watch with the little individual number buttons. And when did reaching into your pocket become such an inconvenience that you need to spend >$300 just so you can avoid doing that some of the time.

Was it Tubular that does it to you? That fucking level blows.

Well that's cool that it is officially part of the canon. I like the idea of them just deciding to create some new shit decades after it originally aired. I think technically, Dead Zone was also canon because it was definitely referenced more than once in DBZ and seemed to take place right before the first episode of DBZ. And I agree that it was one of the best movies, although my favorite is probably the first Broly movie, which in my opinion was one of the best pieces of DBZ content ever put out. The rest of the movies are average at best. From what you're saying it sounds like I'll enjoy the latest movie. Sounds interesting. I forgot about Tenchi Muyo. I watched the shit out of that when it used to play on Toonami but I don't recall exactly what was so appealing about it at the time. I never really understood that series though because there were like two or three versions that were completely divorced from each other and seemed to tell a different flavor of the same story. Was that show actually good or was it only good because I was 16 when I watched it?
-
Wow, glad to hear it went over well with you. I've been re-watching DBZ for awhile now with my daughter and yeah, the show gets a little bit worse each time I watch it. It's still very nostalgic to watch but most of it is pretty boring with the exception of the Saiyan and Cell sagas, which I do still enjoy. I'll have to check these new movies out. Is Battle of the Gods any better than the original 13 DBZ movies? There were a few of those that I liked but most of them weren't that great if I recall.

I'll be on from time to time but I'm barely at around level 20 and haven't even touched strikes or raids or any of that stuff.

Jesus, tell me about it. After being skeptical for awhile I think I'm sold on this technology now and would totally buy one of these devices. But no release dates and no places I'm aware of to go try one out. I just have to sit here and continue to watch people talk about how great it is while I'm stuck in this lame ass real world.

This is a much better way of stating exactly how I feel.

The St. Bernadette Super Mario World Challenge
Zeusthecat replied to Patrick R's topic in Video Gaming
That sounds like probably the best strategy to me. But I've never really paid much attention to how the point allotment in Super Mario World works. So I wonder if it would be better to play through that whole level each time and try to get the top of the goal post each time so you can run the bonus round. I think that is definitely the level though. I've been playing this a ton with my daughter over the last several months and it really is the quickest level to amass extra lives and has a pretty easy way to get to the top of the goal post. -
Man, I'm honestly not sure what to think about some of the stuff going on in this thread. It almost seems like the logical conclusion would be that we should never describe anything in a negative way because almost any negative word might have some negative connotation that would be offensive to someone. I use a lot of the words that you guys are claiming might be offensive and have never in my life seen any indication that anyone has been bothered by them so I never would have imagined that they could be considered offensive. And I'm still doubtful on some of these. I mean, referring to things as "crazy" or "dumb" or "stupid" or "lame" or "silly" is such common vernacular that everyone uses and most of those types of words are clearly divorced from their original connotations to such a degree that I'm willing to bet most people could go their entire lives using those words and never run across a single instance of someone hearing those words and being offended. This is a weird topic for me because there are definitely some words that I recognize are harmful and that I do my best to scrub from my vocabulary when I become aware of how my usage of them impact others. Going back to the term "retarded", I still use it from time to time in situations where I am absolutely certain there is no possible way for anyone to be offended, like if I'm having a private conversation with my wife. But beyond that, I've pretty much dropped it from my vocabulary because it is clearly a term that a good number of people find offensive rather than funny. And that is the whole reason I started using it to begin with, because it was a funny thing to say. Not so much any more. What it all boils down to for me is balancing my desire to have fun with the English language with my desire to not be a shitty person to other people. I think it is inherent that some of the funnest and funniest words to use are often going to be offensive on some level to some people. I don't really have a desire to to scrub every possible offensive word completely from my vocabulary because that leaves me with a bunch of boring and unfunny words to use. I guess my approach then is to try to scrub the bad ones as best as I can and not worry too much about the other stuff unless someone calls me out on it, at which point I'll either add that to the list of words to scrub completely or just not use it around that person depending on how convinced I am of it actually being an offensive word. Does this make me a shitty person? In that regard, sure. I guess I'm fine with being a little bit on the shitty side in some regards.

I think I drank too much caffeine today. My legs feel like they are going to rip themselves off of my body and go running away at full speed and my heart is beating out of my chest. Also, I keep getting distracted by shiny things.

That's fair. I never claimed to be a sane person.

I'm liking everything about this so far. It's been awhile and I think I'm ready to jump back in. It kind of sucks that all the hundreds of tracks I have won't transfer over from my 360 to my PS4 but oh well.

I've got six episodes left on Cowboy Bebop and what I've seen so far is very good and I think the show deserves the praise it gets. That being said, I don't know that it resonates with my personal tastes enough for me to call it one of my favorites. The style and animation and story are all quite good but it seems like it walks a line between being too serious and yet not serious enough that it leaves me wanting a little bit more. I know that probably doesn't make much sense but one of the main things that really worked about Space Dandy for me was that it presented itself as kind of a dumb show that just parodied a bunch of popular things and then suddenly, out of nowhere, delved into some really serious or touching themes that pulled at my heart strings when I least suspected it. I like it when a show emotionally manipulates me like that and given the fact that I haven't seen a whole lot of anime, I am still surprised by a lot of that stuff and usually don't see it coming. There were definitely a good number of instances there where that show got me and I ended up with a lump in my throat. With Cowboy Bebop though, I haven't seen a whole lot that has caught me off guard and all of the characters have such a relaxed, don't care kind of attitude that it's hard to feel the kind of emotional impact that I was hoping for. There are definitely some exceptions to this and there were a few episodes that were absolutely beautiful and nailed it for me but they were few and far between. Most of the show, it seems like the characters could more or less do without each other and only stick together out of convenience. We'll see if that changes in these last six episodes but as it stands now, Space Dandy has given me a lot more to chew on than Cowboy Bebop and I like it better because of that. But I don't think I could argue that it is a 'better' show than Cowboy Bebop. Also, I prefer the music in Space Dandy to the music in Cowboy Bebop (but I do still really like Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack).

Oh I'm sure it won't be long before that urge hits again. For now you guys are safe though.

Yeah, that's probably a good call. I'm definitely in the mood for some good isolation right now (as I write a post on a forum on the internet). But who knows, I'm sure it will swing the other way again soon and I'll be craving social interaction again.

I was browsing the GG thread and it reminded me of how annoyed I am by how much relevance has been given to the concepts of 'Liking' and 'Re-tweeting' and '#Hashtagging'. Lately I just have almost no desire to deal with the internet because I feel like so much of it is just full of people displaying completely binary opinions on things so that they fit nicely into these social media frameworks. It's especially frustrating when I think about my own opinions on things and how they might change with my mood or how I might like parts of a thing and not like other parts of a thing. Or sometimes I start out loving/hating something and after thinking about it, decide that I actually hate/love it. And it is even more irritating seeing people who feel the need to offer an opinion on every little thing just because they have a platform to do so. I guess I'm just feeling a bit irritable lately and craving a chill atmosphere. Also, I feel like most of this post is ironic.

I have it and am about halfway through the series right now. I've never seen it before so I have nothing to compare it against but I appreciate that they kept the 4x3 aspect ratio instead of cropping it to make it widescreen like they did with the DBZ orange bricks. It looks really nice and crisp and I appreciate not having to watch ads all throughout the show. It seems like Hulu Plus has been getting more and more egregious with their ads over the last couple years so if it's a show I'm pretty confident I'll like then I prefer to just pick up the dvd or blu ray and watch it that way.

I hate myself for using that gif.
