I'm really jealous of all of the talented artist people on this forum. I'm just imagining so many wonderful possibilities for Jurassic Star Wars but when I try to convert it into a picture, my hands just produce pure diarrhea.

There is maybe a sliver of what Jerry Seinfeld is getting at with regards to polytycal correctness in comedy that I somewhat agree with. But the real problem with his position is Bee Movie. Any credibility he had went right out the window when we were served that turd. Also, he definitely comes across as a major douche in the things Bjorn linked.

Idle Thumbs 213: Build the Nublar
Zeusthecat replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
One thing that's been disappointing me a bit lately about the cast is that Danielle keeps randomly dropping all of these wonderful references to things and they seem to go completely unnoticed by everyone else. I can't remember if it was this episode or the last one but how the hell is a great Home Alone reference not immediately recognizable by every human being in the 30ish age range? Danielle, please keep doing the lord's work. -
Man, I am really really liking Super Mario 3D World. This game is just incredible in so many ways. My daughter and I have continued making our way through the game and In my opinion, this game just does so many things right that I may have to go as far as to say it is the Greatest Mario Game Ever Made. They even smartly left Yoshi out because fuck Yoshi! The only thing it's missing is FLUDD and Isle Delfino.

I feel like the world is owed a Jurassic Park/Star Wars crossover film. I could really go for some force using velociraptors dual wielding light sabers with their feet. Edit: And a tyrannosaurus with a Darth Vader style mask and a hooded cloak.

Oh man, I'm sorry. Both of you guys have different user names on PSN than here and I have a hard time keeping those straight. My apologies. I also finally got my first etheric light and hit level 33.

Hatred: The Most Despicable Game of All Time?
Zeusthecat replied to Architecture's topic in Video Gaming
I wonder though, what is gained by having a bunch of articles saying a terrible product like this is terrible? You have some people that would see a game like this and be repulsed by it, some people who would be indifferent, and some people who would totally be into it. I don't think all of this media coverage saying it was bad did anything to convince the people who would have been into it to steer clear and for those who were indifferent, I think it had the net effect of pushing them towards supporting a game they otherwise wouldn't have cared about. And that is because this is an industry that is largely predicated and defined by edgy violence and the controversies that have arisen around it. So naturally, indifferent gamers will probably tend to band together to support violent games like this that are mired in controversy because that is what we have always historically done when a violent product in our medium is challenged. So yeah, I think the coverage this game received had a net negative effect and only served to bolster support for these types of games (again, that is just due to the nature of the video game industry as it pertains to violence). I think the better approach would have been to instead publish a bunch of articles highlighting other non violent games that could have used some exposure and saved this battle for a game that didn't actually need this exposure to sell. -
I haven't run nightfall yet. I might be on in the next couple hours though so if people are available, I'd love to do a run. Aside from that, I'm just feverishly trying to get rank 3 in iron banner before it ends. Not sure if I'll get any playtime after today though and I have about 1000 rep left to grind.

Hatred: The Most Despicable Game of All Time?
Zeusthecat replied to Architecture's topic in Video Gaming
I think first and foremost, they developed the game because it is the shitty type of game they wanted to make. But I do think at some level they hoped or maybe even planned for the negative media coverage to generate interest for their game. If you read the first articles that came out, they even came out and said that they had hoped the negative media coverage would bolster the sales of their game and smugly thanked sites like Polygon for giving them the coverage they had hoped for. Of course, it could have all been unintentional originally but I do think it is plausible that that was exactly what they were going for. -
Hatred: The Most Despicable Game of All Time?
Zeusthecat replied to Architecture's topic in Video Gaming
I think it is unfortunate that this game wasn't ignored from the outset. These were some unknown shitty dudes making a shitty game and if it weren't for the massive amount of media coverage it got, it would have probably just faded into obscurity like so many other games. If it would have been popular and well known regardless then I think the negative media coverage would have been fine but in this case it is literally the only reason this game sold so well. It is painful to think that those developers were right and that their little "plan" to generate negative media coverage to bolster the sales of their game succeeded so spectacularly. Other than their shitty trailer they didn't have to do one bit of marketing. -
Me, Vulpes, and a friend teamed up last night to try to take down level 32 PoE and Jesus Christ that is some really intense and fucked up shit. 3 hours and we ultimately had to call it a night because we just could not beat the final round. 4/5 of the rounds were Vex and the final boss was the gate lord guy who puts you in a damage bubble every 1-2 minutes. If you don't quickly break out of it you die and you can pretty much only break out if someone's picked up the jailbreaker buff from killing a specific yellow bar Vex guy that shows up after each bubble. We got into a pretty good rhythm with finding the guy and killing him right before the damage bubble popped but it just takes so long to get the boss's health down that we would inevitably make a mistake or eventually get overwhelmed. Very awesome and fun fight, but it's such a bummer to walk away empty handed. We also tried Trials of Osiris and got fucking stomped. Turns out two level 32s and a level 33 are just too underpowered for that mode. So I'm at a point now where I badly need etheric light to get to level 33/34 but I'm not quite high enough level to do any of the stuff that guarantees etheric light. At least I'll finally get one from iron banner.

I didn't realize that. That's kind of weird though if you think about it. Because at that point you're literally just buying a pre-built PC which is hardly a new or unique thing. And the only reason I could see for getting a Steam machine with Windows over any other pre-built PC would come solely down to price and specs.

When I first got my cat back in 2003, I was going to name him God because I had recently abandoned my religious beliefs and was super excited to commit a bunch of guilt-free blasphemy. But I decided I'd rather not needlessly offend my religion enslaved friends and went with Zeus instead. When I first signed up for an Xbox Live account in 2005, Zeusthecat was the first name that popped into my head. Unfortunately it was taken and I was a major stoner so I went with Zeusthecat420. Then, when I graduated, I renamed it to xXZeusthecatXx because I wasn't very creative and it fit the naming convention of some of the other guys I was playing Halo 3 with regularly. I wish I had named my cat God instead. Because then my username here would have been Godthecat.

I'm just sayin' that sounds like a really narrow market to me. I think the one thing that will make it a no-go for a lot of those people is the fact that it is Linux based and they will be locked out of playing over 75% of the games available on Steam. At that point, why not just get an Ouya for like 1/5th the price?
-
Ah okay, I misunderstood that part then. So I could definitely see picking up the Steam Link and Steam controller and I think there is a solid market for that. I'm still not sold on the Steam Box itself though. It doesn't seem to go far enough as a PC or console and is in that weird price range where I think you'd be better off either buying a console or buying/building a Windows PC that can actually run all of the games on Steam.

Thanks for your perspective. I can't really argue with what you're saying and you're definitely right that she deserves unequivocal support. Unfortunately, I have a lot of disdain for celebrity and reality show culture and I just have a hard time getting over that. I'll shut up now.

Personally, I can't stand the Kardashian family and I think they are all terrible. My wife watched their show for way too many years and they are some of the most garbage, self absorbed people I have ever seen (and to be fair, I feel this way about pretty much every reality show family I've seen). I could care less about how they got famous or anything about sex tapes or anything like that. Good for them for turning that around and owning it. But it doesn't change the fact I find them to be vile people and that they should absolutely not be looked up to by anyone. That being said, I don't know how to feel about this whole Caitlyn thing. On the one hand, I think it's great and everybody should be super supportive of her. On the other hand, this is a person I have not been fond of at all and it does seem kind of weird to heap praise on that person. I guess I agree with you here but it just makes me a little sad that visibility of trans communities is so low that we need to latch onto and heap praise onto any highly visible person that goes through gender re-assignment, no matter how much of a shithead they may be. I mean, would we be obligated to be as supportive even if someone as terrible as Mike Huckabee went through gender re-assignment? The thing that frustrates me most about this is that there are a ton of great people who are struggling with similar issues but because we live in celebrity world, only famous people (regardless of how terrible they are) are really eligible to receive this kind of support and get to grace magazine covers and get awards for being the year's most courageous person. It just makes me sad.

Steam machine release date, specs, and pricing details Honestly, I'm not sold on this and I'm having a hard time understanding who the target demographic would be. The major problem I see is that it looks like only about 25% of Steam's catalog will be supported at launch due to SteamOS being Linux based. To be able to play the other ~75% of Steam games you would need to purchase the Steam Link for another $50 and stream it from your gaming PC. So you either: Already have a decent gaming PC and need to drop a minimum of $500 to get everything you need to play the full catalog of Steam games on your TV. Don't have a decent gaming PC and need to drop well over $1000 on a gaming PC, a Steam Machine, and Steam Link to play the full catalog of Steam games on your TV. Don't have a decent gaming PC and need to drop a minimum of $450 on a Steam Machine to play about ~25% of Steam's current catalog on your TV. From my perspective, I just don't see a strong value proposition for this. With the cheapest option, I could spend $100 less and get a PS4 or Xbone with all of their bells and whistles along with a good lineup of games. And I'm willing to bet that there will be a good number of popular games that won't be playable on the base Steam Box making it even more unattractive as a thing you would own to play games instead of one of the other consoles. And if you want the full lineup of Steam games to play on your TV and don't have a gaming PC, it just becomes so cost prohibitive that only the most hardcore people with a decent amount of disposable income would be able to justify that purchase. So really, the best market I can imagine for this device will be for those that already have a decent gaming PC and want to play PC games on their TV without having to hook their PC up to their TV. And honestly, I don't think there is too big of a market for this either, especially at a minimum $500 price point. If it were me, I would rather just save that money and hook that shit up to my TV directly. And if the Steam controller is actually decent, then maybe that would be worth purchasing to make navigating a PC interface easier on my TV. Maybe there is an argument to be had for how great these things are and all of the problems they will solve but I'm just not seeing it. Given the price point and other details, it doesn't really seem to be solving any problems and doesn't provide an attractive alternative to the other consoles out there. Edit: you bastards revived the other Steam box thread before I could finish this post.

The trailer seemed fine. Good enough to get me excited for Fallout 4 at least. But man, those character models and animations were really fucking weak. They looked super robotic and janky, especially noticeable in the flashback part where civilians are running away.

I kind of feel like pouring an entire bag of powdered sugar into my mouth.

This was a preview, not a review. It would have been a little more bearable if he had actually included some information about the game or interviewed somebody else that played it so they could talk about what they liked/didn't like. I highly doubt this will be helpful to anyone, even those who are indifferent. It was little more than a dude shouting at a cloud.
-
Yes, you beat me to this post but I felt the exact same way. The whole article was basically Colin Campbell talking about how he never liked these games but went to this Rock Band 4 event anyways and still doesn't like them but he could tell other people seemed to like it. Then he went on to have a mini existential crisis about how pointless video games are and how this game exemplifies that for him. It was a very frustrating read mostly because there seemed to be no point to it. He could have just posted an article that was three sentences long and he would have gotten his "point" across: "I don't like Rock Band. I went to a Rock Band 4 event and other people seemed to have fun. I still don't like Rock Band. What am I doing with my life?" (sorry, that was 4 sentences).

I'll try the power save options to see if that helps. I guess it's not too big of a deal since I can just plug it in to a nearby outlet. Unfortunately, even ignoring the battery life issues, I'm not terribly impressed by the tablet controller. My hand kind of cramps up after extended play sessions and the R/L and ZR/ZL buttons are spaced out a little too far from each other making the whole thing just a tad too uncomfortable for me. And with the exception of using it for some of the Nintendo Land games, I'd rather never have to look at the screen on the controller. The display quality is noticeably poor and it's kind of jarring going from looking at my crisp, HD TV screen to this cheap looking 480p display. I'm still loving the system though and looking forward to catching up on a lot of sweet games.

My kids are completely enraptured by the WiiU. My daughter and I are on world 6 in Super Mario 3D World and we've been having an absolute blast. I really do think it's one of the best Mario games ever made and I feel like it does an excellent job of pulling in elements from previous games and honing them to perfection. I would put it up there with Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 as one of my favorite Mario games. We also delved into Nintendo Land a bit today and I really like everything I've tried so far. The standout has been the Mario Chase game where the person with the game pad runs away and the other players have to catch them. My favorite touch is how the players looking at the TV screen can see a feed of the gamepad player's face from the gamepad camera. The only negative so far has been the battery life of the gamepad. It seems to only last a few hours before I have to plug it in again.
