  1. I Had A Random Thought...

Never watched CKs stuff before, I think that is just a fundamental truth of parenting. Edit: I feel like a fucking jackass now for posting something that's already been said by someone so prominent in modern culture and not being aware if it. My apologies. Damn its near impossible to have an original thought these days. Do you ever wish you could rewind time?
  2. I Had A Random Thought...

Good arguments Tycho and Miffy, that makes sense. I guess what I'm asking is a futile way of thinking about things. When my daughter goes through her endless series of 'why' questions I eventually run out of answers and end up back where I started or having to just say "because it just is".
  3. I Had A Random Thought...

I'm curious to see what philosophical principals are out there that take this a bit further into the 'why'. Not quite as far as "Why does anything even exist?" (I think a lot of other stuff needs to be answered first) but more like "What is our role as living things in the universe?". If we were able to just observe the universe passively without having any impact on it, it would follow a specific set of rules. But the fact that we are part of it means that we are actively doing things that change what we see as the prescribed course. I really think, given enough time to advance our scientific capabilites, we would eventually be capable of altering the course of meteors or negate the effects of a star exploding. Not that we would be violating any physical laws in doing so, just that we would be smart enough to manipulate those events to diminish what we perceive as their 'negative' effects. It seems like we would naturally progress to a point where we would eventually try to make every corner of the universe as safe for life as possible. So it would be interesting to see if science gets to a point where it can quantify that kind of natural trend into some kind of theory just like any other law of physics. I assume there's some philosophical principle out there that delves into the rules that dictate why life does what it does and I'd be interested to learn about what's been developed in that area.

Did I do something wrong? Edit 2: Tried your suggestion Patrick and also tried using Firefox and keep getting the same results, oh well.
  5. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Ride (Tiesto Remix): 96 times played on iTunes. Go listen to that song, then listen to it 5 more times since a lot of music sucks the first time you hear it. That song has affected me in a way no other song has.
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

I know this is far from an original question but why in a universe of non-living stuff did life emerge? I mean, there was a big bang or whatever and stars formed and shit started bouncing around and doing what it does and we have gotten pretty good at being able to define these laws that the universe seems to operate under. I imagine we will eventually have all of those physical laws figured out but then there's fucking life. The laws of physics might say what will happen when two giant rocks are headed on a collision course with each other but what it doesn't have an allowance for is if a life form makes a decision to blow one of those rocks to smithereens. A drop of ink in a glass of water may never re-converge into a perfect drop but someone may be able manipulate that glass of water to make that happen. So did life happen so the universe could get around all of its physical limitations? We tend to view destruction and chaos as negative and we desire to bring order to things. Are we here to prevent the destruction caused by stars exploding and cultivate the universe until everything is calm and peaceful? Why do I like dick and fart jokes so much?

Haha, that's not a bad idea. Don't worry, I think I got it all out of my system now.
  8. I Had A Random Thought...

Every day that I age my balls get that much closer to the toilet water.
  9. My wife has no interest in video games and could care less about this podcast. I made her listen to the last 2 minutes of this one and she was absolutely captivated by that kickstarter piece. Her face lit up when Sean started describing the exact emotional response she was having right as she was having it. Now she's upstairs watching Little Miss Sunshine. I have a request Sean: please use your magical powers of emotional manipulation to make my wife like video games.
  10. GTA V

For some reason I've never given a single thought to scuba diving in a video game and am not really aware of any games that have that mechanic. Now all I can think about is scuba diving in a video game. I wonder if you can punch a great white in the face.

BeyondCompare is my favorite code comparison tool and handles that shit so well. Visual Studio's comparison tool sucks (maybe it's better in 2012) and KDiff fucked up some merged changesets so we stopped using that one.

Why does my cat insist on walking around with his asshole on full display? Can't he cover that shit with his tail? When people come over I can't help but wonder if they also can't help but stare at my cat's asshole when he walks by.

I take it to mean she can distinguish between many more visual frequencies than the rest of us. So if blue has a 495nm wavelength most of us probably see all wavelengths in that range as blue while she may be able to pick out all of the miniscule shades of blue inside that range.
  14. Dude, I'm right there with you. Our group hired 2 guys within the last year and a half that play games but before that there was literally noone besides me, despite the fact that we do software development. Our cubes are all adjacent to each other now (the kind with super short cube walls) so we have established what we call 'The Daily Standup' where we all just stand up and talk about what video games we are playing or looking forward to for a half hour. Nothing beats being able to share what you're passionate about with other people.
  15. I Had A Random Thought...

I sometimes wonder if I'm the only living thing in the universe and that everything else I perceive to be living is really just an elaborate hoax my brain has created.
  16. I Had A Random Thought...

I want Judd Apatow to make a sequel to 40 Year Old Virgin called '6000 Year Old Virgin' starring God. I can just imagine the hilarious hijinks as Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen teach God how to hit on chicks and he'd be under all this pressure to bust his first nut but then he would meet the girl (or guy) of his dreams and have to pretend he wasn't a virgin so as not to come off all weird like. But in the end he finally gets laid and it ends up being really good for the girl (or guy) because he's fucking God and he doesn't need practice to be good at it. Also, I'm going to hell.
  17. GTA V

Man I'm a sucker for these games; played 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and 4 all to 100% completion. I get what some people are saying about the narrative but for some reason the story never bothered me in any of the games and having lived in those worlds for such extended periods of time I've grown quite fond of the stories. Keep in mind though that this is coming from someone who loves The Pest.
  18. I Had A Random Thought...

"Dr Pepper 10, it's not for women." I think it's cool that they managed to create a soda that gives men an insatiable desire to go offroading and get all muddy and shit. Guess it only interacts with Y chromosomes.
  19. Life

Do it. If it's entry level they probably won't expect you to know all of the specific software they use.
  20. I Had A Random Thought...

And you ironically succeeded in participating in the intended way with your post. Well played sir.
  21. I Had A Random Thought...

And one more: some people can be mentally retarded but is there ever an appropriate case for calling someone physically retarded?
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

Well then let's throw midgets into the mix. Why is the term 'midget' more offensive than 'dwarf' or 'little person'? Calling them a dwarf is like referring to them as a mystical race that spends all of their time mining for treasures. And calling an overweight person a 'fat person' wouldn't go over as well. So wouldn't 'midget' be the least offensive term?
  23. So how many minutes/hours past 4:20 on dishonored 4/20 is dishonored 4/20 4:20? I need to know when to make a trip to my garage.
  24. Life

Tegan, absulutely agree with you. There are some very good life lessons that can be learned from religion that you won't typically see anywhere else and those have stuck with me. I truly hope in the near future that society can learn to be more tolerant and take an objective viewpoint on EVERYTHING. Seriously, if everyone took philosophy 101 and became aware of the prevalance of fallacies in so many aspects of our culture we could really start making some progress. I think once the 'fear' aspect is removed from most religions (Buddhism is an excellent example of this) we might start to get to a place where kids can learn about it in school without risk of indoctrination.
  25. Life

That is a tough situation to be in. My point of view is that if there really is a God, I would still go to heaven because I am a good and moral person. The only difference is that I derive my morals from logic and what truly makes sense rather than what a book tells me and ironically I have found that I think I am actually a better Christian now than I was when I was a Christian. I imagine you may be in a similar situation. Maybe there is a way to convey that to your mom. I basically told my mom that I believed that if God did exist he is a whole hell of a lot smarter than he is portrayed in the Bible and that I think the Bible was just an attempt by more primitive people to explain all the shit that went on around them and as a result ended up with some really weird things like sacrifice, and the malevolent version of God (with a lot of imperfect human attributes added) that exists in the old testament. I told her that if he is real, I believe I would be going to heaven because he would be smart enough to know that I lived my life justly and treated others as I would want to be treated. I mean, it would be pretty weird for a God to send me to hell because I refused to believe in him unconditionally without any proof even though I was a good person that followed more of his rules than his followers. Why create us with insatiable curiosity in the first place if we are supposed to take all of that on faith alone?
