  1. Monkey Island 2: SE

I realized these two things have sabotaged the way I think about subsequent puzzles. Most of the puzzles and items are somewhat realistic or at least make some level of logical sense but using a as a monkey wrench was pretty out there. Now when I'm stuck I try ridiculous stuff because I'm not too sure how far out there some of the other puzzles or items are. So, yesterday I got a chance to play for a couple hours and I ended up finding 2 more map pieces. I was pleased to see that (I figure I should probably put this shit in a spoiler if I'm asking other people to do the same) I also looked and I'm at 19 hours in this game so all in all it feels like I'm going pretty slow (which I don't mind at all, this game rocks).
  2. Life

I know what it's like to do work that doesn't excite you. I got a degree in electrical engineering and for the first two years out of school I was doing street lighting and power design. It was super fucking lame but I had to take the job because the economy was horrible and I had no other options. I definitely did not anticipate working in AutoCAD and Revit, having to get my P.E., and working primarily with civil engineers (not that there's anything wrong with civil engineering). To top things off I worked with assholes on power trips. I was super lucky that our firm had a software group and managed to build a case to the powers that be to let me transfer over. Life has been great since then and the people I work with now are amazing. Hang in there man and just keep your eyes open for any good opportunities.
  3. I Had A Random Thought...

I did some logging for 6 months with my dad when I was 18. Learning how to make a tree fall where you wanted it was cool but I fucking despised sharpening the teeth on a chainsaw. Like nails on a chalkboard.
  4. I Had A Random Thought...

I love having a boring office job. Having worked other types of jobs that were high stress in the past I have come to realize that boring is best for me. I still sometimes have nightmares from when I worked at Applebee's years ago.
  5. Just a heads up to anyone interested, I added Borderlands 2 to my list. I just finished my first playthrough and am a level 35 soldier at the moment.
  6. Monkey Island 2: SE

I'm curious what the general sentiment is regarding the difficulty of this game. Am I considered good at it if I am stuck for a few hours and eventually figure it out or am I considered a baby for getting stuck for hours at a time at all? I feel like I am doing fairly well but I'm not sure if that is because of my own problem solving abilities or because of how well this game is designed and how it subtly nudges you towards the solution as you spend more time exploring the possibilities. As far as my progress goes, I haven't had a chance to play since I figured out how to get the mirror but I did get a chance to try it out and found that the reflected light beam goes several feet above the table and into the back wall. Based on the fact that it "burned" the brick where the mirror was supposed to go I had assumed it might be used to change the color of your drink but now I'm not so sure. I keep thinking about the fact that the camera pans into the house when the light beam goes in and pans all the way over to the far wall which you can't reach when you are normally in the house. But then there is also the fact that it still shows your mug on the table if you left your mug there when you went out to put the telescope back on the statue. Maybe I need to find a way to elevate the mug so it is hit by the beam. I am also pondering whether I am supposed to find a way to permanently fasten the telescope to the statue since it falls out after a few seconds. That would enable me to go back into the house and possibly interact with the light beam. And then there is that hole near the beach but I am led to believe that I come out of that hole after going down the trapdoor in the house rather than going into it (since Guybrush is too short, unless there is an object he can climb on to reach the hole). Thanks Merus for your vague hint but as with miffy's I don't plan on clicking that tag unless I reach my breaking point, which is entirely possible (but I will never do it, ever, probably not, maybe). The fact that you referenced number 4 makes me want to re-visit that a bit more after I try a few more things with the light beam.
  7. Recently completed video games

My friend and I just finished Borderlands 2 last night. I found it to be a very good game and thoroughly enjoyed it. Having recently played Borderlands 1 (which I enjoyed) I was very impressed with all of the improvements in this game. The combat felt much more polished, every gun was exciting and different, the loot game was very satisfying, enemy types were more diverse and required different strategies to defeat, the story was better, the environments were more interesting, vehicles were less frustrating and offered more variety, and the quests were more interesting. In my opinion this is one of the best sequels I've played in awhile. Perhaps a big part of why I enjoyed this so much was due to the fact that I played it start to finish with a friend. I played the Soldier class with all of my skill points going into my turret and my friend played the Assassin with all of his points going into close quarters melee combat. By the end of the game I was absolutely in love with my turret. It had 2 guns, rocket pods, and fired slag bullets. Plus I ended up with a legendary class mod that reduced the cooldown by 25% so I was able to have it up over 50% of the time. It was so cool throwing my turret out and then mowing guys down with my rocket launcher/grenades/assault rifle/SMG/pistol while my buddy was running around as an invisible assassin knifing guys in the back. Then seeing all the experience popping up as enemies died and the showers of loot that rained out of their corpses was just icing on the cake. This game definitely sold me on the RPS concept. I found the writing in this game to be well above average compared to most video game stories. It wasn't perfect and there was some awkward forced humor but by the end of the game I found that it had provided many more memorable moments than most video game stories (but I do think the damsel in distress thing with Lilith was kind of lame). Above all, my favorite character was Handsome Jack by far. He has to be one of the best villains I've ever seen in a game. He is hilarious, charismatic, insecure (although it is very subtle), and a fucking psychopath. The fact that you do some quests for him was so cool too. At times I felt like he was both a friend and an enemy and I really liked how they were able to make me hate him and like him at the same time. So I'll finish with my favorite moment of the game. Jack asks me to kill myself and I see that my two options are "do it" and "don't do it". So my buddy and I go to the ledge where we can jump off and kill ourselves and start contemplating whether we should do it or not. At first we were thinking about just having one of us jump to see what would happen. After some deliberation I said "fuck it" and just ran and jumped and my friend followed my lead and did the same. It was so worth it. Jack's response to us actually killing ourselves was classic and we got a shitload of eridium for doing it. I like that a game rewarded me for purposefully killing myself. I'll definitely be running a second playthrough to level up to 50 and am hoping for some good 4 player action this time around to see how the dynamic changes with the other two classes (we only ever played 2 player on our first run). Hopefully the people playing this game on Xbox Live aren't as shitty as those playing the first game.
  8. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

I feel the same way. Even though there aren't many games at launch and within the first year there is a weird satisfaction that comes with actually being aware of every game that exists for a new console. I am usually so enamored by the fancy graphics of a new console that I will play the couple games I have for much longer than I typically would later in the cycle.
  9. I Had A Random Thought...

Molyneux created me. I am Milo.
  10. Dreams!

I read the latest one you have on there. Fucked up but very entertaining. I wonder what a baby head in a bottle of nail polish represents?
  11. I Had A Random Thought...

Whenever I stand up in my cube at work to talk to someone near me and they aren't there I start pretending I'm a probe droid and just scan the room for other life forms.
  12. The threat of Big Dog

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, so here (it's long but worth watching): http://www.ted.com/talks/vijay_kumar_robots_that_fly_and_cooperate.html
  13. Dreams!

The only two lucid dreams I remember having were both when I was a kid. In one, a bunch of dream stuff was happening and I ended up falling into a river near the end. I couldn't swim and as I was sinking I realized I could still breathe. That made me realize I was dreaming and I spent the rest of the dream just swimming around underwater (realizing I was dreaming apparently gave me the ability to swim) and doing all kinds of acrobatic underwater shit before I woke up. It was fun. I don't remember much about the other dream except that I realized I was dreaming at some point, spawned a magic carpet for myself, and just flew around. I remember flying over waterfalls and stuff and I think I also spawned Aladdin to ride on the magic carpet with me. I was having so much fun going wherever I wanted to go and was very sad when I woke up and my magic carpet was gone. I was also lucky enough to remember a very small portion of a dream I had last night. There was a parrot walking around on the ground in front of me and for whatever reason I was responsible for picking the parrot up and giving it back to its owner. I spent awhile trying to get it to come over to me and it eventually felt comfortable enough to walk over and perch on my outstretched finger. I then stood up with the parrot on my finger to show everyone else how awesome I was for getting him. It was really weird because I distinctly remember feeling the weight of the parrot perched on my finger and I remember smelling that parrot smell. I realize I probably had this dream because I spent all day yesterday thinking about how to distract that parrot in Monkey Island 2.
  14. I'm reading the cast right now and just wanted to comment on the "excitement over Sony maintaining the status quo" remark. I look at the new consoles the same way as I have with every other console iteration. Up until the current generation I think the majority of people got excited over new consoles simply for the fact that they would have better graphics and games that would be capable of doing more things. In a sense, every console up until now has maintained the status quo in regards to how games are played. We get a few new features here and there like the ability to play DVDs, the ability to play games online and the ability to stream Netflix but those have been supplemental to the core gaming experience. Once again we are getting new consoles that will potentially allow for games to do more things in addition to some cool new features. For that reason I am excited just as I have been for every new console that has released. But I will admit that my excitement was heightened this time around because the status quo is being maintained by Sony. I see a shift towards always online as an impediment to playing games in many cases and was almost certain that it was inevitable from both Sony and Microsoft. I guess it's kind of like never being excited about bad shit not happening in life and then being really excited when you think something bad is going to happen and it doesn't.
  15. It's not the years, Indie, it's the mileage

I've been thinking about this argument and I have to agree/disagree. I agree in the sense that almost every game now can be described visually as x crossed with y crossed with z. I disagree in the sense that there are so many fucking games that represent such a wide range of artistic styles that it is becoming increasingly difficult (maybe even impossible at this point?) to create a truly unique style that isn't in some way influenced by another game's style. I mean, you have abstract, black and white, stark and creepy, vibrant and colorful, hyper stylized, retro, kindergarten art, ultra realistic, etc. I am not at all bothered by things being influenced by other things. If I was I would probably hate all movies, music, and games.
  16. Feminism

Wow! That's shitty for someone to react to someone doing a nice thing in that way. I can honestly say that has never happened to me. Keep holding doors open man! I'm sure 99% of people appreciate it.
  17. Monkey Island 2: SE

It does sound cool for the audio commentary part. I'm not necessarily against updated graphics either but I feel like when I play a remake of a game with new graphics it changes my whole perception of what that game is. I'm also not too keen on the idea of the characters having voices although if that can be shut off then I guess it's not really an issue. But who am I kidding? I'll probably play it eventually anyways.
  18. Monkey Island 2: SE

I fucking got it and I swear to my video game collection miffy that I never once clicked your spoiler tag. Just you saying "Re number 3:" in your post was enough of a hint. I will never ever ever click that tag and what you posted will forever remain a mystery to me. So I basically sat at work all day thinking about what I was missing and how everything had been pieced together so far and became convinced that I was on the right track regarding item number 3 in my original post. Based on all of the interactions I'd seen so far with switching out the grog with the colored drink and the telescope shining a light into an empty mirror frame I knew that there was only one possible solution. I had to get that fucking mirror. To get the mirror I would have to distract the parrot. What had me stumped was that the parrot seemed uninterested in the empty bag of parrot feed and there didn't seem to be any way to obtain any parrot feed. After thinking about it for a little while I remembered that the description for the bag of parrot feed when you 'Look at' it was something like "There is a picture of a parrot on the front". I know I had already tried using the bag with the mirror to try to distract the parrot and seen no results so I had dismissed the thought. After thinking about it some more and remembering the description from the bag I figured that had to be it and I was missing something. Maybe I could hang it from Indy's Whips on the second rack or maybe there was something else on the second shelf I could hang it from. So I finally got on tonight, went straight into the store, and saw it immediately. A fucking hook. At least I was only stuck on that in-game for a little over an hour. Would have been much longer if I hadn't had time to think about it today. This game is fucking amazing. It's literally the 2nd adventure game I've ever played next to Secret of Monkey Island and it is so fucking good. I'm also kind of a purist so I'm playing the original version on Scummvm. Not sure if I would ever want to play the special edition because the classic graphics are just too fucking charming.
  19. Feminism

I actually think Dewar makes a decent point about treating women equal vs giving women special treatment. It can be a weird line to straddle considering the fact that women should be treated equally while at the same time there is so much societal pressure to let women go first, always open doors for women, etc. My answer to that is that everyone should do all of these things for men and women. Open doors for any human you see and let others go first when appropriate. Help a guy out in the same way you might help a woman. That's just decent human behavior that should apply to anyone.
  20. PL4YST4TION 4

I like to get a new console when it comes out, just because. Haven't been able to do this in almost 7 years. Like Thrik mentioned, playing games on my tv. (yeah, I know I could hook my computer up to it but that isn't happening) Real life friends are also getting one, so peer pressure. Cost is much less compared to me building a new gaming rig that can compete graphically. I'm sure 1 or 2 good games will be available at launch and I will play the shit out of them. Plus I still have countless other games to hold me over on other platforms until exclusives and other good games start to roll in. They are doing a respectable thing with their approach to gaming vs Microsoft and I want to speak with dollars showing that I support that approach. And really $399 is pretty damn decent. Considering people will drop over $600 for a new iPad without giving it a second thought I think it is a really good price.
  21. I Had A Random Thought...

Oh man, it keeps getting better! I'm actually sad that this won't actually happen (or will it?).
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

Well we want to avoid artificial preservatives and stuff. I prefer things to be organic. (Sorry to everyone for bringing this topic up, couldn't help myself)
  23. I Had A Random Thought...

It's worse than you think. One of the products in the Revenge Candle catalog would be floating bath candles.
  24. I Had A Random Thought...

I hate to do this but I need to bring up poo again just real quick to piggyback on Twig's new Kickstarter. I've had this idea for awhile to create a new product called Revenge Candles. These are basically just candles with crap in the middle. The great thing about them is that it takes the flaming bag of shit on the doorstep to the next level since the person you give this to basically lights it themselves and will eventually end up with an awful smell permeating their house that they unknowingly caused. I have actually thought out all of the different types of Revenge Candles that could be manufactured but I better leave it at that. So Twig, would you be willing to package my Revenge Candles with your product? After being punched in the face the recipient might think that the candle is an "I'm sorry I punched you in the face just now" kind of gift but end up getting a double whammy.
  25. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

Microsoft is becoming the Pinocchio of the games industry. Except they're not really lying about anything and it's their middle finger that keeps growing larger instead of their nose.
