  1. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

Well Kill la Kill is doing a specific thing about body shaming and social control. It has something to say that removing the sexuality would change, whether you agree with it or not. BUT they also have a line that gives a pointless scifi reason for the skimpy outfits so the version of this trope that might only exist in my head is on display in KlK. "Female Character is written to be conventionally sexy for any reason" doesn't really seem like just one trope and lumping Bayonetta and Miranda and Zhaan and Nami in one category doesn't seem all that illuminating is all I'm saying.

Wait, I thought the trope specifically was the random exculpatory detail that doesn't serve a purpose beyond explaining away distracting sexiness. "Distracting Sexiness" being defined as sexualization that is present solely for titillation. I don't know what to think now...
  3. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

I don't think it's a Baby Got Backstory situation since it isn't a throwaway detail that she's a special kind of sex worker, it's a huge part of her character that plays a major role in her relationship with Mal, problematic though it may be.

So the trope is the presence of suspiciously exculpatory details included seemingly only to exonerate the author? Not just that there is a sexy character and that sexiness is a part of their backstory / overall plot. I think that's focused enough to be interesting. In that case, I'd agree that Kill la Kill belongs, because they do go out of their way to pointlessly justify the sexy uniforms as Merus mentioned above. Do they do that in Bayonetta tho? Borg Queen is a sexist trope but I don't think they try to justify it in fiction so she wouldn't be included here?

Kill la Kill is the perfect example of something that probably shouldn't be included in this trope even though it seems like it will be.
  6. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

Is it possible for a female character to be justifiably sexy if her sexiness is conventional? If not, this trope will just get flooded with literally 99% of media.
  7. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

Maybe this trope needs to be more focused on the plot justification of hypersexualized characters who's reason for existence is primarily to titillate. Right now it seems kind of scatter shot and maybe a little pearl clutchy. Like, Zhaan's sexuality is pretty important to her character and she exists on a show with a ton of other good female characters, Jessica Rabbit is a deliberate subversion of the sexy noir femme fatale but Nami's tits are twice the size of her head because ... I mean, she's getting older. Starfire from DC's New 52 is a perfect fit, I think. The Borg Queen from Star Trek:TNG probably belongs as well. However, I think ME's Miranda is a borderline case since it's actually pretty important to her character from the word go, but the way the camera ogles her probably pushes her over the edge. EDI's story is totally a flimsy excuse to have a sexy fembot tho.

Nope. However, in the 2nd(?) episode Matt Lees says "I probably shouldn't have called it Daft Souls because everyone will think it's about Dark Souls". Then, in the next episode, he starts with "Hello, this is Dark Souls... shit" Good podcast tho
  12. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Well... he isn't Tho, it's telling that this isn't sparking any rants or videos or anything. A video game big wig saying you should use the media brainwash Americans into agreeing with bad foreign policy, like for example using the way they use the media to brainwash people into buying their videos games, is within the accepted narrative of games. That this is a thing is probably just making him feel good about his stance on GG since, "LOOK! what I'm talking about is totally real, even if I have no interest in pursuing that particular case of corruption". Say video games are sexist, and everyone loses their minds.

I listened! Daft Souls is great and so is Regular Features.
  14. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I think that line of argument is one that he's backed himself into in an effort to avoid confronting his own shittyness. Frame the entire ordeal as being about consumer advocacy and ethics so you can dismiss any hint of cultural criticism as being misguided SJW-ing or cynical pandering. Harassers are dismissed as extremists who don't represent the "real" gamers. He's so unaware of his own cultural baggage that he styles himself totally free of bias and subject only to facts and logic, therefore his arguments are pure and any pushback is either in bad faith or the result of misunderstandings (I think he's retreated to blaming Twitter as a format in every confrontation with anyone half as articulate as himself that I've seen). However, I do value the presence of TB in the conversation as I definitely share more of his cultural life experience than I don't and, at first glance, a lot of his argument make sense... until someone with more perspective comes along and punches holes the size of small moons through his bullshit (and through the bullshit that still infects me).
  15. Destiny

How do the kill orders work? Are they that Queen mission that appears in the Destination screen? I've got Queen... coin(?)... things in my inventory that don't seem to do anything. I honestly wonder how much of the crazy bad ui stuff was inspired by the willfully obtuse presentation of something like Dark Souls.

Has anyone else been watching Outlander? It's a show I'm surprised does not have more internet buzz: a high concept period piece, run by Ronald "Battlestar Galactica" Moore and Diana Gabaldon, the author of the series of novels it's based on. It's set in the Scottish Highlands in the 1750's against the backdrop of the Jacobite rebellion (topical!). It has a female main character and a decidedly female perspective and gaze. I would have thought it would be more notable. Any one of the above points should have at least warranted an FPP on Metafilter. It seems weird that I don't think I would have even heard of it if my wife, a fan of the books (she describes them as being as to romance novels as what Game of Thrones is to Dragonlance novels), hadn't heard about it from her friend, another fan of the books. Maybe I've just been looking at the wrong internet.
